Book excerpt: Direct measurements by moored current meters and indirect measurements from geostrophy are compared and discussed for a region over the continental slope off central California during the Davidson Current period. During that same period vertical temperature and salinity profiles were made at 23 stations on four separate cruises in the study area south of Monterey, California. These arrays of moored current meters simultaneously recorded the flow of the current at specified levels. The California Countercurrent was found to be present in the region of study during the entire observation period. Its offshore position and extent, its intensity and its vertical location and extent varied in a way largely consistent with its reported behavior in other locations along the U.S. West Coast. Book excerpt: This thesis describes results from moored current meters, 150-350 m, for a region over the continental slope off Cape San Martin, California, from January 1979 to April 1980. Current vector time series were constructed from the data and compared to a local coastal upwelling index. Progressive vector diagrams were also constructed, and spectrum analysis was performed for alongshore and cross-slope currents. The California Countercurrent was found to be present in the study area during the entire period. Seasonally, the countercurrent was substantially stronger during the spring. Frequent current reversals and oscillations occurred between equatorward and poleward flow, less often at the nearshore station. Preferred low frequency energy peaks were found at periods of about 10 days. The intensity of the countercurrent increased with increasing coastal upwelling index, and the cross-slope flow also appeared to be related to the local coastal upwelling index. Keywords include: California undercurrent; Davidson current; California current; Eastern boundary currents; and metered currents.

Book excerpt: Mean currents and density were measured off Point Sur, California in March 1989 using Pegasus and CTD instruments. Velocity, temperature, salinity, and density fields are examined to discern the structure of the California and Davidson currents. Velocities measured by Pegasus are compared to flow fields derived from geostrophy. The Davidson Current flows poleward at the surface in its winter configuration despite northerly winds and coastal upwelling which normally drive the flow subsurface in the summer months.

Book excerpt: This study presents float observations from four RAFOS floats that were deployed off central California for a twenty-three day period as part of a Tomography Demonstration Experiment. These floats, which sampled hourly, were used to investigate float characteristics and the navigational accuracy of current processing techniques. An ordinary mean least square method is proposed to mathematically estimate values for random and systematic errors, producing navigational trajectories which compliment previous methods when determining the most probable solution of the float trajectory. Potential sources of error in the navigational solution are examined, as well as the importance of float/ source geometry on position accuracy. It was determined that these floats supported previous studies of the California Current System, and proposes that the California Undercurrent may in fact be wider and deeper that previously suspected. Book excerpt: A high-resolution, multi-level, primitive equation ocean model is used to examine the response of an idealized, flat-bottomed, eastern boundary oceanic regime on a beta-plane to both steady and seasonally-varying climatological wind forcing. The focus of the study is the California Current System along the coastal region, from 35 deg N to 45 deg N, off the Western United States. With steady equatorward wind forcing, a surface equatorward current and poleward undercurrent develop. Eddies form around days 60 and 7 with initial development in the northern region of the domain. The strong meandering current continues to grow throughout the 360 days of model time and can produce eddies that have wavelengths up to 200 km and can propagate at least -200 km offshore. When the alongshore component of the temporally averaged seasonally varying climatological wind forcing is used, there is a weak poleward undercurrent and equatorward surface current. There is weak upwelling and very little eddy activity with the eddies only propagating to -100 km offshore. When alongshore component of the time-dependent wind forcing with spatial variability in latitude is used, a surface equatorward jet, poleward undercurrent and eddies are generated. The eddies form throughout the domain in this experiment due to a competition between the 0-plan effect and the continuous and stronger equatorward wind forcing in the southern portion of the domain. The eddies in this experiment propagate at least -150 km from shore.

Book excerpt: Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and dis seminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis (CINDAS) * at Purdue University in 1957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dissemination phases of the ac tivity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all concerned if the printing and distribution of the volume were handled by an international publishing. house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Corporation of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 25 (thesis year 1980) a total of 10,308 theses titles from 27 Canadian and 214 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for theses titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this important annual reference work. While Volume 25 reports theses submitted in 1980, on occasion, certain universities do report theses submitted in previous years but not reported at the time.
