Book excerpt: Two measurements of the lifetime of neutral and charged B mesons in p[bar p] collisions at[radical]s= 1.8 TeV by the CDF experiment are presented. The first relies on the study of exclusive decays of the type B[yields][psi] K, the second on semileptonic decays of a B meson into a D[degrees] or a D. The combined results are[tau](B[sup+])= 1.62[+-] 0.09 ps, [tau](B[sub 0])= 1.60[+-] 0.09 ps and[tau](B[sup+])/[tau](B[sup 0])= 1.00[+-] 0.07.

Book excerpt: The authors present recent CDF measurements of[tau][sup+], [tau][sup 0], and[tau][sup+]/[tau][sup 0] using exclusive B[yields][psi]K decays, where B= B[sup+] or B[sup 0], [psi]= J/[psi] or[psi](2S), and K= K[sup+], K*(892)[sup 0], K[sub S][sup 0], or K*(892)[sup+]. The precision of these results is less than 10% and is nearly identical to that previously reported at LEP.

Book Synopsis Rethinking Urban Risk and Resettlement in the Global South by : Garima Jain
Download or read book Rethinking Urban Risk and Resettlement in the Global South written by Garima Jain and published by . This book was released on 2021-06-10 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A study on urban risk and resettlement programs in the Global South in the era of climate change. Environmental changes impact everyone, but the burden is especially heavy upon the lives and livelihoods of the urban poor and those living in informal settlements. In an effort to reduce urban residents' exposure to climate change and natural disasters, resettlement programs are becoming widespread across the Global South. Yet, while resettlement may reduce a region's future climate-related disaster risk, it can also often increase poverty and vulnerability. This volume collates the findings from a research project that examined urban areas across the globe, including case studies from India, Uganda, Peru, Colombia, Mexico, Cambodia, and the Philippines. The book offers a unique approach to resettlement, providing an opportunity for urban planners to re-think how disaster risk management can better address the accumulation of urban risks in the era of climate change.

Book Synopsis Systems Dependability Assessment by : Jean-Francois Aubry
Download or read book Systems Dependability Assessment written by Jean-Francois Aubry and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2016-02-23 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Petri Nets were defined for the study of discrete events systems and later extended for many purposes including dependability assessment. In our knowledge, no book deals specifically with the use of different type of PN to dependability. We propose in addition to bring a focus on the adequacy of Petri net types to the study of various problems related to dependability such as risk analysis and probabilistic assessment. In the first part, the basic models of PN and some useful extensions are briefly recalled. In the second part, the PN are used as a formal model to describe the evolution process of critical system in the frame of an ontological approach. The third part focuses on the stochastic Petri Nets (SPN) and their use in dependability assessment. Different formal models of SPN are formally presented (semantics, evolution rules…) and their equivalence with the corresponding class of Markov processes to get an analytical assessment of dependability. Simplification methods are proposed in order to reduce the size of analytical model and to make it more calculable. The introduction of some concepts specific to high level PN allows too the consideration of complex systems. Few applications in the field of the instrumentation and control (l&C) systems, safety integrated systems (SIS) emphasize the benefits of SPN for dependability assessment.
Book Synopsis Lectures on Formal Methods and Performance Analysis by : Ed Brinksma
Download or read book Lectures on Formal Methods and Performance Analysis written by Ed Brinksma and published by Springer. This book was released on 2003-06-29 with total page 438 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Traditionally, models and methods for the analysis of the functional correctness of reactive systems, and those for the analysis of their performance (and - pendability) aspects, have been studied by di?erent research communities. This has resulted in the development of successful, but distinct and largely unrelated modeling and analysis techniques for both domains. In many modern systems, however, the di?erence between their functional features and their performance properties has become blurred, as relevant functionalities become inextricably linked to performance aspects, e.g. isochronous data transfer for live video tra- mission. During the last decade, this trend has motivated an increased interest in c- bining insights and results from the ?eld of formal methods – traditionally - cused on functionality – with techniques for performance modeling and analysis. Prominent examples of this cross-fertilization are extensions of process algebra and Petri nets that allow for the automatic generation of performance models, the use of formal proof techniques to assess the correctness of randomized - gorithms, and extensions of model checking techniques to analyze performance requirements automatically. We believe that these developments markthe - ginning of a new paradigm for the modeling and analysis of systems in which qualitative and quantitative aspects are studied from an integrated perspective. We are convinced that the further worktowards the realization of this goal will be a growing source of inspiration and progress for both communities.

Book Synopsis Transforming Asian Cities by : Nihal Perera
Download or read book Transforming Asian Cities written by Nihal Perera and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While there is no lack of studies on Asian cities, the majority focus on financial districts, poverty, the slum, tradition, tourism, and pollution, and use the modern, affluent, and transforming Western city as the reference point. This vast Asian empirical presence is not complemented by a theoretical presence; academic discourses overlook common and basic urban processes, particularly the production of space, place, and identity by ordinary citizens. Switching thevantage point to Asian cities and citizens, Transforming Asian Cities draws attention to how Asians produce their contemporary urban practices, identities, and spaces as part of resisting, responding to, andavoiding larger global and national processes. Instead of viewing Asian cities in opposition to the Western city andusing it as the norm, this book instead opts to provincialize mainstream and traditional knowledge. It argues that the vast terrain of ordinary actors and spaces which are currently left out should be reflected in academic debates and policy decisions, and the local thinking processes that constitute these spaces need to be acknowledged, enabled, and critiqued. The individual chapters illustrate that "global" spaces are more (trans)local, traditional environments are more modern, and Asian spaces are better defined than acknowledged. The aim is to develop room for understandings of Asian cities from Asian standpoints, especially acknowledging how Asians observe, interpret, understand, and create space in their cities.

Book Synopsis Spatial Violence by : Andrew Herscher
Download or read book Spatial Violence written by Andrew Herscher and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-02-02 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book poses spatial violence as a constitutive dimension of architecture and its epistemologies, as well as a method for theoretical and historical inquiry intrinsic to architecture; and thereby offers an alternative to predominant readings of spatial violence as a topic, event, fact, or other empirical form that may be illustrated by architecture. Exploring histories of and through architecture at sites across the globe, the chapters in the book blur the purportedly distinctive borders between war and peace, framing violence as a form of social, political, and economic order rather than its exceptional interruption. Regarding space and violence as co-constitutive, the book’s collected essays critique modernization and capitalist accumulation as naturalized modes for the extraction of violence from everyday life. Focusing on the mediation of violence through architectural registers of construction, destruction, design, use, representation, theory, and history, the book suggests that violence is not only something inflicted upon architecture, but also something that architecture inflicts. In keeping with Walter Benjamin’s formulation that there is no document of civilization that is not also a document of barbarism, the book offers "spatial violence" as another name for "architecture" itself. This book was previously published as a special issue of Architectural Theory Review.
