Book Synopsis From Nucleons to Nucleus by : Jouni Suhonen
Download or read book From Nucleons to Nucleus written by Jouni Suhonen and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007-04-22 with total page 655 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Nucleons to Nucleus deals with single-particle and collective features of spherical nuclei. Each nuclear model is introduced and derived in detail. The formalism is then applied to light and medium-heavy nuclei in worked-out examples, and finally the acquired skills are strengthened by a wide selection of exercises, many relating the models to experimental data. Nuclear properties are discussed using particles, holes and quasi-particles. From Nucleons to Nucleus is based on lectures on nuclear physics given by the author, and serves well as a textbook for advanced students. Researchers too will appreciate it as a well-balanced reference to theoretical nuclear physics.

Download or read book Neutron Stars 1 written by P. Haensel and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007-12-06 with total page 633 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book gives an extended review of theoretical and observational aspects of neutron star physics. With masses comparable to that of the Sun and radii of about ten kilometres, neutron stars are the densest stars in the Universe. This book describes all layers of neutron stars, from the surface to the core, with the emphasis on their structure and equation of state. Theories of dense matter are reviewed, and used to construct neutron star models. Hypothetical strange quark stars and possible exotic phases in neutron star cores are also discussed. Also covered are the effects of strong magnetic fields in neutron star envelopes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Proceedings from the September-October conference in Lipari, Italy, discussing both the increase in neutron stars and new phenomena that have been discovered in these star systems. Forty- one contributions are arranged in sections on the history of neutron star study--from early speculations to current problems, neutron star structure, radio pulsars, X-ray binaries, evolution of binaries, and X-rays from single neutron stars. Individual papers address subjects like pulsar magnetic fields and glitches, young neutron stars in supernova remnants, high- energy emission from binary pulsars, thermonuclear burning on rapidly accreting neutron stars, modelling gamma ray bursts, and the search for old neutron stars in molecular clouds. Download or read book Yvain written by Chretien de Troyes and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 1987-09-10 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The twelfth-century French poet Chrétien de Troyes is a major figure in European literature. His courtly romances fathered the Arthurian tradition and influenced countless other poets in England as well as on the continent. Yet because of the difficulty of capturing his swift-moving style in translation, English-speaking audiences are largely unfamiliar with the pleasures of reading his poems. Now, for the first time, an experienced translator of medieval verse who is himself a poet provides a translation of Chrétien’s major poem, Yvain, in verse that fully and satisfyingly captures the movement, the sense, and the spirit of the Old French original. Yvain is a courtly romance with a moral tenor; it is ironic and sometimes bawdy; the poetry is crisp and vivid. In addition, the psychological and the socio-historical perceptions of the poem are of profound literary and historical importance, for it evokes the emotions and the values of a flourishing, vibrant medieval past.

Download or read book Nuclear Physics written by V. Devanathan and published by Alpha Science International, Limited. This book was released on 2011 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nuclear Physics, designed as a textbook for graduate students deals with the size, shape and properties of nuclei, the electric and magnetic moments, the strong nuclear force that binds nucleons, the nuclear structure, various nuclear models -- the shell model, Nilsson's model, the collective model and unified model -- radioactive decays such as the alpha, beta and gamma decays, nuclear and heavy ion reactions and synthesis of transuranic elements. The Strutinsky shell correction, the effect of parity violation in weak interaction, elementary particle interactions with nuclei and the quark structure of the nucleon are also briefly discussed. NEW TO THE SECOND EDITION: * Two Appendices G and H, one on the Evaluation of Matrix Elements and the other on the Evaluation of Transition Probability. The study of static properties of nuclei such as electric quadrupole moment, magnetic dipole moment and the calculation of energy levels involve the evaluation of matrix elements whereas the study of dynamical properties such as the nuclear transition from one state to another by interaction with an external field involves the calculation of transition probability. These appendices will help the students make a quantitative study of both the static and dynamical properties of nuclei. KEY FEATURES: * Problems with Solutions at the end of each chapter * Includes Review Questions

Book Synopsis Magnetic Fields and Star Formation by : Ana I. Gómez de Castro
Download or read book Magnetic Fields and Star Formation written by Ana I. Gómez de Castro and published by Springer. This book was released on 2011-09-17 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Magnetic Fields play a key role in the physics of star formation on all scales: from the formation of the large complexes of molecular clouds to the formation of solar-like planetary systems. The plasma physics involved is non-linear and very complex, which requires the development of large numerical codes. An additional difficulty is that the detection and study of magnetic fields is not easy from an observational point of view, and therefore theoretical models cannot easily be constrained. In the week from April 21st to 25th in 2003, a meeting was held on the Campus of the Universidad Complutense de Madrid (Spain) to join theoretical and observational efforts to address these issues. The objective was to define a set of relevant problems for the physics of star formation that can be properly addressed with the current or near-future instruments. This book summarizes the results of this intensive week of work. The book is written in a comprehensive manner and reviews our current knowledge of the subject. It also represents an updated account of the ideas and thoughts of the scientists working in the field of Star Formation. The contributions are presented in six chapters which correspond to the six fundamental issues (sessions) on which the discussion was focused during the workshop: the physics of turbulence in the Interstellar Medium (ISM), the formation of structure in the ISM, the formation of stars within dense cores of molecular gas, the physics of accretion disks, the physics of outflows and their interaction with the ISM, and the interaction between the stellar magnetosphere and accretion disk. Each chapter starts with a comprehensive summary written by one of the editors, which includes input from the contributions as well as the editor's own thoughts on the subject. For all these reasons the book is well-suited as a primer to introduce graduate students in the richness of this field of research.
