Book excerpt: Cosmic ray produced 1°Be (t12 = 1.6 x 106 years) activities have been measured in fourteen carefully ground samples of lunar surface rock 68815. The 1°Be profiles from 0 to 4 mm are nearly flat for all three surface angles measured and show a very slight increase with depth from the surface to a depth of 1.5 cm. These depth profiles are in contrast to the SCR (solar cosmic ray) produced 26Al and 53Mn profiles measured from these same samples. There is no sign of SCR produced 1°Be in this rock. The discrepancy between the data and the Reedy-Arnold theoretical calculation (about 2 dpm 1°Be/kg at the surface) can be explained in two ways: (1) the low energy proton induced cross sections for 1°Be production from oxygen are really lower than those used in the calculations or, (2) compared to the reported fits for 26Al and 53Mn, the solar proton spectral shape is actually softer (exponential rigidity parameter Ro less than 100 MV), the omnidirectional flux above 10 MeV is higher (more than 70 protons/cm2 s), and the erosion rate is higher (greater than 1.3 mm/My). 1°Be, as a high energy product, is a very useful nuclide for helping to obtain the SCR spectral shape in the past. 23 refs., 3 figs., 1 tab.

Book excerpt: New sets of cross sections for the production of krypton isotopes from targets of Rb, Sr, Y, and Zr were constructed primarily on the bases of experimental excitation functions for Kr production from Y. These cross sections were used to calculate galactic-cosmic-ray and solar-proton production rates for Kr isotopes in the moon. Spallation Kr data obtained from ilmenite separates of rocks 10017 and 10047 are reported. Production rates and isotopic ratios for cosmogenic Kr observed in ten well-documented lunar samples and in ilmenite separates and bulk samples from several lunar rocks with long but unknown irradiation histories were compared with predicted rates and ratios. The agreements were generally quite good. Erosion of rock surfaces affected rates or ratios for only near-surface samples, where solar-proton production is important. There were considerable spreads in predicted-to-observed production rates of 83Kr, due at least in part to uncertainties in chemical abundances. The 78Kr/83Kr ratios were predicted quite well for samples with a wide range of Zr/Sr abundance ratios. The calculated 8°Kr/83Kr ratios were greater than the observed ratios when production by the 79Br(n, .gamma.) reaction was included, but were slightly undercalculated if the Br reaction was omitted; these results suggest that Br(n, .gamma.)-produced Kr is not retained well by lunar rocks. The productions of 81Kr and 82Kr were overcalculated by approximately 10% relative to 83Kr. Predicted-to-observed 84Kr/83 ratios scattered considerably, possibly because of uncertainties in corrections for trapped and fission components and in cross sections for 84Kr production. Most predicted 84Kr and 86Kr production rates were lower than observed. Shielding depths of several Apollo 11 rocks were determined from the measured 78Kr/83Kr ratios of ilmenite separates. 4 figures, 5 tables.

At the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN), physicists and engineers from all over the world are searching to understand the fundamental laws of the universe. It is at CERN that the world's largest and most sophisticated experimental instruments have been built, to accelerate particles at the energy of 3.5-4 TeV with the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). A Toroidal LHC ApparatuS (ATLAS), one of the four main detectors at LHC. In ATLAS, di-boson production is one of the most important electro-weak processes.The electro-weak sector of the SM, as well as the strong interactions, can be tested through the precision measurements of the W+W− production cross section. A measurement of the W+W− production cross section in 8 TeV center of mass proton-proton collisions is presented here from data collected with the ATLAS detector at the LHC for a total integrated luminosity of 20.3 fb−1. The W+W− events are selected with 3 final states: ee, eμ, and μμ. In order to suppress the background contamination, mainly from the Drell-Yan and ttbar processes, a cut on missing transverse energy is applied and events with hadronic jets satisfying appropriate selection criteria are rejected. The major backgrounds, mainly including W +jets, top and Z+jets, are estimated by data driven technique. The measured cross section is 71.0+1⋅1−1⋅1(stat)+5⋅7−5⋅0(syst)+2⋅1−2⋅0(lumi) pb, which is consistent with SM Next-to-Next-Leading-Order prediction of 63.2+2⋅0−1⋅8 pb.

Book excerpt: The inclusive cross section for top quark pair production is measured in proton-proton collisions at √s = 7 and 8 TeV, corresponding to 5.0 and 19.7 fb-1, respectively, with the CMS experiment at the LHC. The cross sections are measured in the electron-muon channel using a binned likelihood fit to multi-differential final state distributions related to identified b quark jets and other jets in the event. The measured cross section values are 173.6 ± 2.1 (stat)+4.5-4.0 (syst) ± 3.8 (lumi) pb at √s = 7 TeV, and 244.9 ± 1.4 (stat)+6.3-5.5 (syst) ± 6.4 (lumi) pb at √s = 8 TeV, in good agreement with QCD calculations at next-to-next-to-leading-order accuracy. The ratio of the cross sections measured at 7 and 8 TeV is determined, as well as cross sections in the fiducial regions defined by the acceptance requirements on the two charged leptons in the final state. The cross section results are used to determine the top quark pole mass via the dependence of the theoretically predicted cross section on the mass, giving a best result of 173.8+1.7-1.8 GeV. Furthermore, the data at √s = 8 TeV are also used to set limits, for two neutralino mass values, on the pair production of supersymmetric top squarks with masses close to the top quark mass.
