Book excerpt: Common Core Eureka Math for Grade 3, Module 7 Created by teachers, for teachers, the research-based curriculum in this series presents a comprehensive, coherent sequence of thematic units for teaching the skills outlined in the CCSS for Mathematics. With four-color illustrations, complete lesson plans, reproducible student worksheets, and assessments, this resource is uniquely designed to support teachers in developing content-rich, integrated learning experiences that adhere to established standards and encourage student engagement. Developed by Common Core, a non-profit advocacy group dedicated to producing content-rich liberal arts curricula for America's K-12 schools, Common Core Mathematics is the most comprehensive CCSS-based mathematics curriculum available today. The modules are sequenced and paced to support the teaching of mathematics as an unfolding story that follows the logic of mathematics itself. They embody the instructional "shifts" and the standards for mathematical practice demanded by the CCSS. Each module contains a sequence of lessons that combine conceptual understanding, fluency, and application to meet the demands of each topic in the module. Formative assessments are included to support data-driven instruction. The modules are written by teams of master teachers and mathematicians. This Module addresses Geometry and Measurement Word Problems. Common Core Learning Standards Addressed in Grade 3, Module 7: 3.MD.4, 3.MD.8, 3.G.1

Book excerpt: Measuring - Grade 3 Workbook contains lessons and exercises in which both the metric system and the customary system are covered. First, students learn about units of length. We start by measuring to the nearest quarter of an inch. Since most rulers measure to the eighth or sixteenth part of an inch, it is helpful to cut out a ruler from the lesson that only has tick marks for every fourth of an inch, and tape that onto an existing ruler. Next, students measure using centimeters and millimeters. They also create line plots from measurement data where the horizontal scale is marked off in quarters of an inch. The next two lessons help students become familiar with feet, yards, miles, meters, and kilometers-the units for measuring medium and long distances. Then it is time to measure weight. The first lesson deals with pounds and ounces, and the next one with grams and kilograms. It is very helpful if you can use a kitchen scale for these lessons. Lastly, we study liquid volume, first of all the customary units (cup, pint, quart, and gallon) and then the metric units (liter and milliliter). The emphasis is on becoming familiar with the customary units of volume and measuring volume in milliliters. Many of the lessons in this workbook also have an optional section about conversions between measuring units, such as changing three meters into centimeters, or two feet into inches. Even though conversions between units belong to 4th grade in the Common Core Standards, I have included some easy conversion problems because I feel many third graders are ready for them. We all use various measuring units in our everyday lives, and using them is the key to remembering what they are, how big they are, and what the conversion factors are. Naturally, people in the United States do not use the metric system a lot, while people elsewhere do not use the customary system. The units your child does not use are likely to be forgotten easily. Encourage your student(s) to spend his free play time with measuring devices such as a scale, measuring cups, measuring tapes, and rulers.

Book excerpt: How can you introduce terms from geometry and measurement so that your students’ vocabulary will enhance their understanding of concepts and definitions? What can you say to clarify the thinking of a student who claims that perimeter is always an even number? How does knowing what changes or stays the same when shapes are transformed help you support and extend your students’ understanding of shapes and the space that they occupy? How much do you know … and how much do you need to know? Helping your students develop a robust understanding of geometry and measurement requires that you understand fundamental statistical concepts deeply. But what does that mean? This book focuses on essential knowledge for mathematics teachers about geometry and measurement. It is organized around three big ideas, supported by multiple smaller, interconnected ideas—essential understandings. Taking you beyond a simple introduction to geometry and measurement, the book will broaden and deepen your understanding of one of the most challenging topics for students—and teachers. It will help you engage your students, anticipate their perplexities, avoid pitfalls, and dispel misconceptions. You will also learn to develop appropriate tasks, techniques, and tools for assessing students’ understanding of the topic. Focus on the ideas that you need to understand thoroughly to teach confidently.

Book excerpt: This book is an amazing resource for teachers who are struggling to help students develop both procedural fluency and conceptual understanding.. --Dr. Margaret (Peg) Smith, co-author of5 Practices for Orchestrating Productive Mathematical Discussions Robert Kaplinsky, the co-creator of Open Middle math problems, brings hisnew class of tasks designed to stimulate deeper thinking and lively discussion among middle and high school students in Open Middle Math: Problems That Unlock Student Thinking, Grades 6-12. The problems are characterized by a closed beginning,- meaning all students start with the same initial problem, and a closed end,- meaning there is only one correct or optimal answer. The key is that the middle is open- in the sense that there are multiple ways to approach and ultimately solve the problem. These tasks have proven enormously popular with teachers looking to assess and deepen student understanding, build student stamina, and energize their classrooms. Professional Learning Resource for Teachers: Open Middle Math is an indispensable resource for educators interested in teaching student-centered mathematics in middle and high schools consistent with the national and state standards. Sample Problems at Each Grade: The book demonstrates the Open Middle concept with sample problems ranging from dividing fractions at 6th grade to algebra, trigonometry, and calculus. Teaching Tips for Student-Centered Math Classrooms: Kaplinsky shares guidance on choosing problems, designing your own math problems, and teaching for multiple purposes, including formative assessment, identifying misconceptions, procedural fluency, and conceptual understanding. Adaptable and Accessible Math: The tasks can be solved using various strategies at different levels of sophistication, which means all students can access the problems and participate in the conversation. Open Middle Math will help math teachers transform the 6th -12th grade classroom into an environment focused on problem solving, student dialogue, and critical thinking.
