Book excerpt: The book begins with an introduction to the general problems of making measurements in high temperature and a presentation of chemically reacting flow systems. It describes each instrument with the various diagnostic techniques and discusses measurements that have been made in furnaces, flames, and rocket engines. The detailed measurement techniques described in this book cover a wide spectrum of applications in combustion systems, including gas turbine, rocket measurement techniques that were developed in laboratories. Information obtained on detailed temperature, velocity, particle size, and gas concentration distribution is leading to improve understanding of the chemical combustion process and to design imporvements in combustors.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents some of the most recent advances in the theory of chemical processes in the condensed phase. The approaches and applications studied in the book vary widely from classical mechanics to quantum mechanics, encompassing a range of systems from atom transfer reactions in simple fluids to charge transfer in water to biological systems. Each chapter presents an overview of a state-of-the-art technique by investigators who have been at the forefront of developing the approaches. The theoretical study of condensed phase chemistry is one of the most exciting and rapidly expanding fields of chemical physics, and this volume provides a snapshot of the forefront of research in this area.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The combustion modeling of energetic materials still involves a guessing step due to the lack of knowledge in the condensed phase. Quantum dynamical calculations are presently the only way to predict the initial gasification reaction but require tremendous computing power, thus limiting their application. This constitutes a lack of completeness in the design of modeling tools. Through quantum mechanics, it is known that incoming energy will couple only in certain ways with a molecular system. The way this coupling is defined will depend on the selection of an energy model. A simple empirical method was devised which uses an energy coupling assumption and spectroscopic data of energetic molecules as the source for the complete modal molecular picture of the system. The method enables a qualitative prediction of the first combustion reaction through comparison with emission spectra of energy sources. The goal of this work is to present the method developed along with some results and gather tools for future research in the same subject. The thesis will first review the current state of research in the field of condensed phase energetic materials combustion. A discussion on the different theoretical foundations and assumptions used related to quantum mechanics and spectroscopy shall follow culminating with a description of the method developed. The analysis method will then be applied with two example energetic molecules nitroguanidine and nitrocellulose. The study will conclude with an explicit prediction for the two example cases followed by a discussion on future research that could be undertaken based on the conclusions drawn here.

Book excerpt: Heterogeneous combustion or burning is the sequence of exothermic chemical reactions between a fuel and an oxidant accompanied by the production of heat and conversion of chemical species. The release of heat can result in the production of light in the form of either glowing or a flame. This book presents topical research data in this field of study including transient modelling in heterogeneous combustion; combustion-based formation of dioxins and dioxin-like compounds; the surface chemical reactivity of combustion particles; a mathematical model of combustion wave processes in a heterogeneous medium with chemical reactions in the gas phase; residential coal combustion; and the thermogravimetric analysis conditions of biomass combustion.
