Book Synopsis Means of Locating Disabled Or Stopped Vehicles by : F. B. Pogust
Download or read book Means of Locating Disabled Or Stopped Vehicles written by F. B. Pogust and published by . This book was released on 1967 with total page 726 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An infrared disabled-vehicle detection system is demonstrated as technically feasible. The system operates reliably to a range of 750 ft and covers a field 60-ft wide which would ensure adequate coverage of three lanes plus the shoulder of a road. The system operates with pulsed signals. Therefore, pulse coding techniques may be employed to transmit a variety of discrete messages.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The problem of the disabled vehicle, particularly on limited-access highways is investigated with emphasis on methods of detection and communication. Existing detection techniques, including those involving surveillance by aircraft and passing motorists, are evaluated. Other detection techniques involving mechanical, pneumatic, visual, optical, acoustical, infrared, electrical, and magnetic principles are discussed.
Book Synopsis Tentative Design Procedure for Riprap-lined Channels by : Alvin George Anderson
Download or read book Tentative Design Procedure for Riprap-lined Channels written by Alvin George Anderson and published by . This book was released on 1970 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of this study was the development of criteria and design procedures for the use of aggregate riprap linings, which consists of a layer of discrete fragments of rock of sufficient size to resist the erosive forces of the flow. The design of such riprap-lined drainage channels involves the interrelationship between the discharge, the longitudinal slope, the size and shape of the channel, and the size distribution of the riprap lining. This report describes these interrelationships and develops design criteria by which a riprap-lined drainage channel can be proportioned and the riprap lining can be specified for a given discharge and longitudinal slope. The relationships so developed have been reduced to design charts, the use of which permits rapid and simple establishment of channel shape and size as well as of the properties of the riprap lining.
Book Synopsis Highway Noise; a Design Guide for Highway Engineers by : Bolt, Beranek, and Newman
Download or read book Highway Noise; a Design Guide for Highway Engineers written by Bolt, Beranek, and Newman and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 840 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Various methods of assessing noise, loudness, and noise annoyance are reviewed and explained; sources, types, and intensities of traffic noise are noted; typical means of abatement and attenuation are described; design criteria for various land uses ranging from low-density to industrial are suggested and compared with the results of previous BBN and British systems for predicting annoyance and complaint; and a design guide for predicting traffic noise, capable of being programmed for batch and on-line computer applications, is presented in form suitable for use as a working tool. A flow diagram describes the interrelationships of elements in the traffic noise prediction methodology, and each element is discussed in detail in the text. The text is presented of a tape recording that takes the listener through a series of traffic situations, with such variables as traffic distance, flow velocity, distance, outdoors and indoors, and presence or absence of absorbers and attenuators.

Book Synopsis The Future of Disability in America by : Institute of Medicine
Download or read book The Future of Disability in America written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2007-10-24 with total page 619 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The future of disability in America will depend on how well the U.S. prepares for and manages the demographic, fiscal, and technological developments that will unfold during the next two to three decades. Building upon two prior studies from the Institute of Medicine (the 1991 Institute of Medicine's report Disability in America and the 1997 report Enabling America), The Future of Disability in America examines both progress and concerns about continuing barriers that limit the independence, productivity, and participation in community life of people with disabilities. This book offers a comprehensive look at a wide range of issues, including the prevalence of disability across the lifespan; disability trends the role of assistive technology; barriers posed by health care and other facilities with inaccessible buildings, equipment, and information formats; the needs of young people moving from pediatric to adult health care and of adults experiencing premature aging and secondary health problems; selected issues in health care financing (e.g., risk adjusting payments to health plans, coverage of assistive technology); and the organizing and financing of disability-related research. The Future of Disability in America is an assessment of both principles and scientific evidence for disability policies and services. This book's recommendations propose steps to eliminate barriers and strengthen the evidence base for future public and private actions to reduce the impact of disability on individuals, families, and society.
