Book excerpt: Our aim is to improve the understanding of the processes determining the turbulent and radiative fluxes at the sea surface, particularly their dependence on sea state and on mesoscale structures in the planetary boundary layer. The objective of the work carried under this grant is to measure in detail the major parameters needed (i) to explain the variability of the turbulent air sea fluxes of momentum, heat and water vapor with sea state and mesoscale boundary layer structures, and (ii) to test the flux-gradient relations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Because global weather and ocean circulations are driven by energy transfers across the atmosphere-ocean interface, studies of it remain at the forefront of research in atmospheric sciences and oceanography. This experimental program was undertaken with the goal of learning how the energy, which is transferred from the wind, is distributed among the mean, wave, and turbulent flow fields in the water. Model test results show that the waves affect the mean flow, but the mean velocity profiles show logarithmic behavior. The wave field generally agrees with the prediction of a linear water-wave theory. In the wind-wave experiments, the turbulent quantities behave similar to those in flows over flat plates. In the mechanical-wave experiments, the turbulent quantities have different trends from those of the wind-wave cases, which suggests possible weak wave-related turbulence. The mean wave-induced shear stress is negative, which implies that the waves augment the mean flow. Thus, the waves can also transfer energy indirectly to turbulence via the mean flow. The turbulent field draws it energy from the mean flow through the mean turbulent shear stress and from the wave field via the wave-induced turbulent stresses. Keywords include: Ocean surface; and Laser doppler anemometer.

This book was released on 1987 with total page 99 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The marine atmospheric boundary layer (MABL) and synoptic-scale situation is described using rawinsonde and sea-surface temperature (SST) data collected during the 1986 Frontal Air-Sea Interaction Experiment (FASINEX). The data obtained from 14 February to 09 March 1986 are divided into eight consecutive three-day periods and analyzed. Significant changes in synoptic-scale features and flow patterns occurred during each three-day period due to movement of low pressure systems. MABL changes noted were due primarily to large scale convergence. Thirteen pairs of rawinsonde launches, seven from opposite sides of an oceanic front and six from the same side (five warm, one cold) are compared. The time difference between soundings in each pair did not exceed sixty minutes. Boundary layer height, mixed layer potential temperature and specific humidity differences between paired rawinsonde launches were larger when launches were from opposite sides of the oceanic front. A combination of both shipboard and aircraft data will be necessary to further describe the conditions of the MABL and synoptic-scale situation.

Book excerpt: This study presents observations of turbulence dynamics made during the low winds portion of the Coupled Boundary Layers and Air-Sea Transfer experiment (CBLAST-Low). Observations were made of turbulent fluxes, turbulent kinetic energy, and the length scales of flux-carrying and energy-containing eddies in the ocean surface boundary layer. A new technique was developed to separate wave and turbulent motions spectrally, using ideas for turbulence spectra that were developed in the study of the bottom boundary layer of the atmosphere. The observations of turbulent fluxes allowed the closing of heat and momentum budgets across the air-sea interface. The observations also show that flux-carrying eddies are similar in size to those expected in rigid-boundary turbulence, but that energy-containing eddies are smaller than those in rigid-boundary turbulence. This suggests that the relationship between turbulent kinetic energy, depth, and turbulent diffusivity are different in the ocean surface boundary layer than in rigid-boundary turbulence. The observations confirm previous speculation that surface wave breaking provides a surface source of turbulent kinetic energy that is transported to depth where it dissipates. A model that includes the effects of shear production, wave breaking and dissipation is able to reproduce the enhancement of turbulent kinetic energy near the wavy ocean surface. However, because of the different length scale relations in the ocean surface boundary layer, the empirical constants in the energy model are different from the values that are used to model rigid-boundary turbulence. The ocean surface boundary layer is observed to have small but finite temperature gradients that are related to the boundary fluxes of heat and momentum, as assumed by closure models. However, the turbulent diffusivity of heat in the surface boundary layer is larger than predicted by rigid-boundary closure models. Including the combined effects of wave breaking, stress, and buoyancy forcing allows a closure model to predict the turbulent diffusivity for heat in the ocean surface boundary layer.
