Book excerpt: The story you are about to read is being told by me, the patient, who lived this experience. It also includes information from the caregivers who gave of their time to help out in any way that they could. This book will show where my family spent the better part of four years of their lives, sleeping in hospital waiting rooms, waiting on me, worrying, and researching all the possible treatments that could help in my case. When you have a Mum and five sisters who are persistent, relentless and don't accept the word "No", it makes for interesting stories. When I was first diagnosed with multiple myeloma, my family started keeping a daily journal of everything that was going on in my presence and behind the scenes. My family filled several journals, which included medical information as well as their thoughts about what they witnessed during this journey. This book contains information from those journals, and how I made it through with their help and a lot of other supportive people. In the end it wasn't just a marathon, it was the ultra marathon; not only for myself and my family but my oncology doctor as well. He has never had a patient like me and probably never will. This is my story.

Jim primarily is treated in Cleveland at University Hospital's Seidman Cancer Center and the Dana Farber Cancer Institute in Boston, with second opinions from Mayo Clinic and Mass. General doctors specializing in multiple myeloma. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ~A Pilgrimage Without End is a heartfelt and engaging story about a woman who was diagnosed with an incurable cancer. When life seemed at its best, it was derailed by a serious cancer diagnosis. After Cherie found herself in the Emergency Room with a terminal and incurable cancer, she went through the absolute darkest period of her life. By bringing together all the lessons life had taught her, she found Inner Peace, something most of us long for yet few are lucky enough to possess. ~A Pilgrimage Without End goes deep into the psyche of the author, who overcame a difficult childhood by staying open to the goodness that exists in the world and by taking ownership of her own mistakes. Through her willingness to forgive, and learn from her mistakes, she was able to take a very difficult life, and subsequent cancer diagnosis, and turn it into a powerful Pilgrimage that taught her that Happiness can be found in the unlikeliest of places, as long as we are open to everything life hands us. This book will leave you astonished and empowered, and you will likely walk away with a renewed appreciation for your own life. A Pilgrimage Without End comes with powerful pictures and quotes created by the author herself, making it an all-around fun reading experience. As one reader put it:I hope you will find Cherie to be as engaging an author as I have. Her tale is intimately personal. Cherie shares the deepest part of herself, her struggles and the lessons she has learned along the way. Her story is not just another autobiographical journal of her battle with cancer." A Pilgrimage Without End" is much more than that! It is a well-crafted self-examination from which we all can learn. In it she reveals her deepest, and often darkest emotional, physical and spiritual struggles she has faced throughout her life. Much of what she has to say is relevant to all of us, and not just those facing a battle with cancer. More than this, Cherie's self-examination and search for truth provides the reader with practical and spiritual guidance and insight when facing our own struggles. Thus, her story is one from which we all can benefit, whether we are confronting cancer, emotional struggles, or life changing events. Read it and be blessed.

Book excerpt: Marrow Me is written with stark beauty and unflinching candor, filled with equal parts grace and horror as a writer at the height of his powers — even while pharmaceutically challenged — shines a light on this increasingly common human condition. Multiple myeloma, a cancer of the blood’s plasma cells, afflicted 488,200 people during 2015 alone; who among us has not been touched in some way by cancer? The course of the disease is brutal, but what sets this memoir apart is Roberts’ ability to slice through the brutality with humor and self-effacement, leaving us with an illness memoir utterly devoid of self-pity that evokes both the 1922 silent film Nosferatu and, at the same time, the humor of The Simpsons. Multiple myeloma’s survival rate is sufficiently low that a diagnosis is typically considered a death sentence. Because Joshua managed to live for twelve years post-diagnosis, he liked to say that for him, it was more like a death paragraph. This book will educate and touch anyone affected by cancer, from physicians to survivors to family members.

Book excerpt: NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • WITH A NEW PREFACE BY THE AUTHOR • A powerful memoir of a dramatic year spent battling cancer and reflecting on a long, happy, and lucky life—from the bestselling author of The Greatest Generation, whose iconic career in journalism has spanned more than fifty years Tom Brokaw has led a fortunate life, with a strong marriage and family, many friends, and a brilliant journalism career culminating in his twenty-two years as anchor of the NBC Nightly News and as bestselling author. But in the summer of 2013, when back pain led him to the doctors at the Mayo Clinic, his run of good luck was interrupted. He received shocking news: He had multiple myeloma, a treatable but incurable blood cancer. Friends had always referred to Brokaw’s “lucky star,” but as he writes in this inspiring memoir, “Turns out that star has a dimmer switch.” Brokaw takes us through all the seasons and stages of this surprising year, the emotions, discoveries, setbacks, and struggles—times of denial, acceptance, turning points, and courage. After his diagnosis, Brokaw began to keep a journal, approaching this new stage of his life in a familiar role: as a journalist, determined to learn as much as he could about his condition, to report the story, and help others facing similar battles. That journal became the basis of this wonderfully written memoir, the story of a man coming to terms with his own mortality, contemplating what means the most to him now, and reflecting on what has meant the most to him throughout his life. Brokaw also pauses to look back on some of the important moments in his career: memories of Nelson Mandela, the Dalai Lama, the fall of the Berlin Wall, the morning of September 11, 2001, in New York City, and more. Through it all, Brokaw writes in the warm, intimate, natural voice of one of America’s most beloved journalists, giving us Brokaw on Brokaw, and bringing us with him as he navigates pain, procedures, drug regimens, and physical rehabilitation. Brokaw also writes about the importance of patients taking an active role in their own treatment, and of the vital role of caretakers and coordinated care. Generous, informative, and deeply human, A Lucky Life Interrupted offers a message of understanding and empowerment, resolve and reality, hope for the future and gratitude for a well-lived life. Praise for A Lucky Life Interrupted “It’s impossible not to be inspired by Brokaw’s story, and his willingness to share it.”—Los Angeles Times “A powerful memoir of battling cancer and facing mortality . . . Through the prism of his own illness, Brokaw looks at the larger picture of aging in America.”—Booklist (starred review) “Moving, informative and deeply personal.”—The Daily Beast “The former NBC News anchor has applied the fact-finding skills and straightforward candor that were his stock in trade during his reporting days to A Lucky Life Interrupted.”—USA Today “Brokaw doesn’t paste a smiley face on his story. Again and again, the book returns to stories of loss but also of grace, luck and the beauty of having another swing at bat.”—The Washington Post “Engaging . . . [with] the kind of insight that is typical of Mr. Brokaw’s approach to life and now to illness.”—The Wall Street Journal “Powerful and courageous . . . [Brokaw] looks ahead to the future with hope.”—Bookreporter

Edited and written by a multidisciplinary group of recognized authorities from the Mayo Clinic, it presents clear guidelines on diagnosis and therapy and covers all aspects of multiple myeloma, from molecular classification and diagnosis, to risk stratification and therapy. Closely related plasma cell disorders such as solitary plasmacytoma, Waldenstrom macroglobulinemia, and light chain amyloidosis are discussed in detail as well. The book addresses often overlooked topics, including the role of radiation therapy, vertebral augmentation, and supportive care. Our understanding of this group of disorders is developing at an unprecedented rate, and Multiple Myeloma meets the need among oncologists and hematologists for a clear, timely, and authoritative resource on their biology, diagnosis, and treatment.

Book excerpt: This book is meant to meet the needs of people with chronic pain, their families and significant others who need to understand important facts and concepts about pharmacological (medication) management of chronic pain. Its orientation is to provide the reader with practical and clinically useful information in a format that will allow rapid processing of the information to assist in rational decision making. The book is not meant to be a comprehensive research compendium, nor does it emphasize basic science research so important as a precursor to clinical drug trials. Good pain management requires a partnership between you, the patient, and your treating physician. Therefore, my hope is that many physicians and other healthcare providers will benefit from reading this book. It is essential that you know as many facts as possible that are likely to shape your physicians decision making. Therefore, I wrote this book as a sequel to The Handbook on the Pharmacological Management of Chronic Pain written for physicians and other pain clinicians to assist them in their decision making. I wrote the book at a level that may be somewhat difficult for some non health care providers because of a vocabulary that often may be more technical than your usual reading. None the less, because some of you may have difficult chronic pain problems or have family members or friends with such problems I chose to cover each topic in a thorough rather than cursory fashion. Whenever possible, I discussed or defined medically technical terms to assist you.

Book excerpt: “A thrilling journey. . . . A must-read.” Freida Pinto “How fortunate a thing it is, when life alters you without warning.” Lisa Ray is one of India’s first supermodels. She’s also an acclaimed actor, a cancer survivor, a mother of twins born through surrogacy, a lifelong student, and a person of no fixed address. She is a woman who has lived many lives. And this is her story. Unflinching and deeply moving, Close to the Bone traces Lisa Ray’s serendipitous life, from her childhood in Canada as the biracial daughter of an Indian man and Polish woman, to her rise as a Bollywood star; from her battle with a rare and incurable cancer, to her journey to find identity and belonging, both in the world and in her own body. Transporting and atmospheric, it takes readers across the globe: Toronto in the 1970s, when Lisa was searching for place and purpose; the intense, frenetic streets of Bombay, where, young and unmoored, she became a peer of some of the biggest names in the Bollywood industry; the lush sensuality of Colombo and a film role that changed the course of her career; and in London, where she simultaneously found her footing in drama school and lost herself in an abusive relationship. It is a storied life, and one whose adventures teach Lisa that in the brightest and darkest moments, no matter where she travels to, she can always find her way back home—to herself. At once charming and wise, intimate and gut-wrenchingly honest, Close to the Bone is a revealing travelogue of the soul—a brave and inspiring story of a life lived on one’s own terms.

Book excerpt: In 1921, at age 39, Franklin Delano Roosevelt (FDR) was struck by a serious illness that left his legs permanently paralyzed. FDR's illness was diagnosed by his doctors as "infantile paralysis" (paralytic polio), and that diagnosis was universally accepted. Over eight decades later, Dr. Armond S. Goldman and his colleagues discovered that a very different disease - Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) - nearly unknown in the US in 1921 - was the most likely cause of FDR¿s illness. A great controversy ensued, which continues to this day. ¿Prisoners of Time¿ tells the complete story of FDR's illness, how he nearly died, how Eleanor saved his life, why FDR's doctors got the diagnosis wrong, the first clues that FDR did not have polio, how it was determined that FDR likely had GBS, why the polio misdiagnosis has persisted, and why getting the diagnosis correct matters.¿Prisoners of Time¿ is a case study of how doctors can only diagnose what they know, how millions of people can accept myth as fact, and how new research can correct the historical record. Readers are invited to enjoy the intriguing story and form their own conclusions, based on the evidence presented.Carefully researched and written, "Prisoners of Time" will be of interest to anybody interested in history, FDR, medical diagnosis, statistical reasoning, the psychology of mass belief, or simply a good story. The intended audience is the general reading public. Many helpful tables and illustrations are included. All technical terms and jargon are explained in clear English, so any reader can follow the story.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is my story of how God brought good out of a very bad situation in my life and brought me back from a dark path, into His marvelous light. He saved me from myself, an abusive relationship, and so much more. This book should come with a warning label to the people in my life who had no clue about the secret life I was living before I became a Christ follower. My life as a Christ follower began in 2013 after a life-changing year of tragedy and heartbreak, not to mention a few broken bones and losing both parents only six days apart. I firmly believe God saved me for a reason and that He has a purpose and plan for my life. He showed me a different path than I had ever traveled before. Once I realized how to be still, listen to God, and allow the Holy Spirit to work in my life, I found my purpose in writing the messages He gives me, and I enjoy sharing them to encourage others and lead them to Christ. He used a horrible year to change my life forever. I felt compelled to write this book not only for my own healing, but if even one person who reads it is touched, inspired, or encouraged in some way, it is worth it. I find it very ironic that God has me revealing the things I hid for so long. My life is not my own. I was purchased with His blood. I believe it is my duty to respect my body, guard my heart, and put on the whole armor of God every day as I surrender myself to Him in every way. As a faithful servant of Christ, I am humbled and grateful for His grace and forgiveness.
