Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: James McGill is an important figure in Canada's history in his own right. The bequest made in 1813 for the founding of a university of which one college was to bear his name only increased that significance. The political tensions of Lower Canada delayed implementation of his plans for sixteen years; and then it was only by incorporating the Montreal Medical Institution as Faculty of Medicine that in 1829 a beginning could be made. Thirty years after his death, the Faculty of Arts was finally established, but not until the trustee-body known as the Royal Institution for the Advancement of Learning was moved from Quebec City to Montreal and established as its board of governors did McGill College begin to revive and hold out promise of a respectable future.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Graph-structured data is ubiquitous throughout the natural and social sciences, from telecommunication networks to quantum chemistry. Building relational inductive biases into deep learning architectures is crucial for creating systems that can learn, reason, and generalize from this kind of data. Recent years have seen a surge in research on graph representation learning, including techniques for deep graph embeddings, generalizations of convolutional neural networks to graph-structured data, and neural message-passing approaches inspired by belief propagation. These advances in graph representation learning have led to new state-of-the-art results in numerous domains, including chemical synthesis, 3D vision, recommender systems, question answering, and social network analysis. This book provides a synthesis and overview of graph representation learning. It begins with a discussion of the goals of graph representation learning as well as key methodological foundations in graph theory and network analysis. Following this, the book introduces and reviews methods for learning node embeddings, including random-walk-based methods and applications to knowledge graphs. It then provides a technical synthesis and introduction to the highly successful graph neural network (GNN) formalism, which has become a dominant and fast-growing paradigm for deep learning with graph data. The book concludes with a synthesis of recent advancements in deep generative models for graphs—a nascent but quickly growing subset of graph representation learning.

Book excerpt: David McGill has assembled an exhaustive study that uses the musical concepts of the legendary Marcel Tabuteau as a starting point from which to develop musical thought. McGill methodically explains the frequently misunderstood ""Tabuteau number system"" and its relationship to note grouping-the lifeblood of music. The controversial issue of baroque performance practice is also addressed. Instrumentalists and vocalists alike will find that many of the ideas presented in this book will help develop their musicianship as well as their understanding of what makes a performance ""musical.""

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: McGill came to Canada from Scotland in 1766 at the age of twenty-two. After ten years as a fur trader, he moved to Montreal and cofounded Todd, McGill & Co. He continued in the fur trade but also encouraged general trade and in later years pioneered the export of goods to Britain. Active in politics, McGill was a magistrate of Montreal and a member of the first parliament of Lower Canada. He also served for many years as a member of the Governor's Executive Council. During the War of 1812 he commanded the militia that defended Montreal, helping to foil the United States's attempts to annex Canada. Educated at Glasgow University, McGill never lost his love of learning, and his bequest of land and an endowment to found a college bearing his name was a gesture fully consistent with his generous character and strong commitment to the city he had made his own.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If you are reading this book, it's likely that you are suffering from chronic, even debilitating pain. Or someone you love is suffering. In either case, you desperately want to find a solution, a way to stop the pain so that life can-somehow-return to normal, or at least close to normal. You want to play catch with your grandchild again. Or be able to lift your child into your arms and hug them close. Or play tennis. Or go for a bike ride with your family, go sailing, paint those canvases, play the piano, walk from your house to the car and from the car to the store. Without pain. And you aren't just suffering physical pain, you're suffering the emotional pain and fatigue of coping and living a life with limits day after day, hour after hour. And now you are ready to do something, anything, to take your life back. Good. You'll need that motivation, that determination on this journey to living a pain free life. I always tell it like it is to my patients, and I tell you now, this journey is not easy. In fact, it's hard work. But it's work worth doing, isn't it? So commit to doing the work which includes the reading and viewing the exercises that I lay out for you in the following pages. Commit not just for you but for those who love you and don't want to watch you suffer. If you are really serious about getting better, then I suggest you print out the following statement. Taking the time to put your intention in writing will help ensure that you stay committed and meet your goal. Mother Nature has a twisted sense of humor. Our bodies want to find balance or homeostasis, but She didn't make it easy to achieve. In fact, if you've been careless with your body, fed it a poor diet, washed your food down with alcohol, and failed to give it enough rest or exercise, then you have your work cut out for you. And you must take responsibility for that, not just for your physical well-being but for your emotional, mental, and spiritual well-being, too. All these parts of what it means to be human, to be a healthy human, are interconnected and affect and influence each other. Fortunately, the body is resilient. The body can bounce back. Fortunately. This book will help you discover how resilient your body is. And how, if you understand and overcome your pain, you can pursue the life you desire...for yourself and your loved ones. You can do it. Let's get started.
