Book excerpt: This essay collection explores the phenomenon of "teen TV" in the United States, analyzing the meanings and manifestations of this category of programming from a variety of perspectives. Part One views teen television through an industrial perspective, examining how networks such as WB, UPN, The CW, and The N have created a unique economic framework based on demographic niches and teen-focused narrowcasting. Part Two focuses on popular teen programs from a cultural context, evaluating how such programs reflect and at times stretch the envelope of the cultural contexts in which they are created. Finally, Part Three explores the cultures of reception (including the realms of teen consumerism, fan discourse, and unofficial production) through which teens and consumers of teen media have become authors of the teenage experience in their own right.

Saved by a mysterious stranger, she finds herself in a new reality with mages, swords, knights, and dragons, where she has to survive and find a way home. And can true ice bring relief to a dragon?

Book excerpt: BEHIND THE KITCHEN DOOR....A Shotgun Wedding, begins in the rural countryside of North Carolina and takes the reader on an adventure and experiences to some of the most exciting cities that one only hears about. From the big, historical city of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania with all its rich history of America, to the tall skyscrapers and exciting nightlife of Manhattan in New York City, to the sprawling city of Los Angeles, California and to Europe and the romantic, "La Ville-Lumiere" (The City Of Light), Paris, France and the French Riviera. It is a story of love, romance, racism, miscegenation, betrayals, triumphs and tragedies. It is the story of Alene, a pretty, smart, teenager who has to endure a lot of tragedies in her young life and of her family’s struggle in America’s rural south from the mid 1920’s through the Great Depression in the 1930 ́s, dealing with racial segregation and Jim Crow laws. She has to grow up much too fast due to the passing of her mother, after giving birth to her baby sister. Alene who was thirteen and the oldest of eight children, helped her father to raise her younger siblings until her father remarried. She gets pregnant by her boyfriend Julius at age seventeen and tells her father, who beats her mercilessly. She and Julius are forced to go to court and tell the judge where they had sex. They are made to marry. She leaves Julius because of beatings and abuse and move up north to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. On her way up north, she experiences first-hand Jim Crow laws of the south, starting with segregated interstate train cars. Once in Philadelphia she meets four young women and they form a lasting friendship. Alene meets and fall in love with Mitch at a jazz club. She becomes seriously ill with tuberculosis, and her father comes and takes her and her little boy back home. Her doctor admits her to a sanitarium for treatment but later tells her and her family that the disease is much worst than he thought. She dies a few months later of the illness.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Received the ‘highly commended’ award by the Society for Educational Studies for books published in 2010. What is learned in universities today? Is it what students expect to learn? Is it what universities say they learn? How far do the answers to questions such as these differ according to what, where and how one studies? As higher education has expanded, it has diversified both in terms of its institutional forms and the characteristics of its students. However, what we do not know is the extent to which it has also diversified in terms of ‘what is learned’. In this book, the authors explore this question through the voices of higher education students, using empirical data from students taking 15 different courses at different universities across three subject areas – bioscience, business studies and sociology. The study concentrates on the students’ experiences, lives, hopes and aspirations while at university through data from interviews and questionnaires, and this is collated and assessed alongside the perspectives of their teachers and official data from the universities they attend. Through this study the authors provide insights into ‘what is really learned at university’ and how much it differs between individual students and the universities they attend. Notions of ‘best’ or ‘top’ universities are challenged throughout, and both diversities and commonalities of being a student are demonstrated. Posing important questions for higher education institutions about the experiences of their students and the consequences for graduates and society, this book is compelling reading for all those involved in higher education, providing conclusions which do not always follow conventional lines of thought about diversity and difference in UK higher education.
