Book excerpt: When you’re dumb enough to piss off a goddess, being turned into a woman is the least of your concerns… When best friends Seth and Noah set off for the ultimate spring break Mexican vacation, they have a wild, booze and party-fueled vision of how their week is going to go, and the throngs of hot girls at the airport are just their first taste of that. But all of those plans get cut short when an ill-advised nighttime jaunt to some off-limits, ancient Mayan ruins puts the guys face to face with an actual, incarnate Mayan goddess. She’s powerful, gorgeous, and very pissed off at all the people who keep exploring her temple and taking her sacred objects. Fed up with thieves, she punishes Seth for the intrusion by transforming him into her own image—a ravishingly hot Mayan maiden—and tells him that he can’t have his old body back until they recover her sacred statue from the thieves that took it. But Noah and Seth (now calling herself Sera) don’t even know where to begin looking, and Sera has no experience being a woman! They’ll need to track down the thieves and help Sera adjust to her awkward new situation before her time runs out, which would be hard enough if she wasn’t also completely distracted by the strange, powerful attraction she now feels for her best friend. How did she never notice how hot Noah was before, and how on earth is she going to navigate these feelings that are driving her crazy? It’s getting hard to remember why she even wanted to be a guy in the first place, when it’s so much fun to be a girl…

Book excerpt: The Pan-American "Huckleberry Finn" for the Twenty-first Century, a memoir of the young author's struggle with two realities, one Anglo-Saxon and the other Hispanic. In this picaresque "coming-of-age" memoir, we see a vision of North America's future in twenty-five years, when the Hispanic population becomes the majority and changes not only the demographics of the United States of America, but its culture. The author sweeps us along on a whirlwind of culture shock. He chronicles the adventures of a disgruntled industrial-age young man who feels a tribal and instinctual reluctance to accept the Third World's view of the United States, and America's foreign policy. But before he can assimilate the profound changes in language, culture, and reality, along comes a new relationship and an earthquake that stops a war only to kill twenty-two thousand people, and changes blind patriotism into something else.

But it turns out there’s an easy solution for that problem—girls never have an issue finding a hot date, right? When Russ loses his third girlfriend in a row to his overly voracious need for getting down and dirty, he complains to his friends that a girl wouldn’t ever have this problem. Case in point: His friend Krystal, a lesbian who sleeps with dozens and dozens of hot dates. But since he’s not a girl, Krystal proposes an alternate solution: Why not go see a fortune teller and see if a little hypnosis can cure him of his appetites? At first, Russ is skeptical, and he’s right to be—the moment he shows up in Madame Orlando’s magic shop, she tells him that he doesn’t need hypnosis. He just needs a partner who’s right for him. But Russ insists, and after a long look into his soul, she sends him home with a magic bath bomb that he absolutely does not believe is going to do anything. His doubt lasts right up until the magic bath bomb does its thing and turns him into a beautiful woman! Now, as the gorgeous brunette Riley, he discovers that he loves being a girl more than he ever could have imagined, and he has no problem finding lovers of either gender. But when his string of endless one-night stands begins to leave him feeling a little empty inside, he begins to wonder… will he ever find the person he’s truly meant to be with? Or will he end up stuck forever as the bright, bubbly girl everyone likes to have a good time with, but no one wants to keep?

Book Synopsis Enchanted Maidens by : James M. Taggart
Download or read book Enchanted Maidens written by James M. Taggart and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 1990-02-04 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spanish villagers tell many folktales that describe in metaphorical language the struggles of young men and women as they emerge from their parental families and join in love. In this book James Taggart presents dozens of orally transmitted tales, including "Snow White," "Cinderella," "Beauty and the Beast," "Blancaflor," and dragonslayer stories, collected from seven villages in the region of CNBceres, and analyzes the differences in male and female approaches to telling them. His study shows how men and women use the tales to grapple with some of the contradictions found in gender relations in their culture, which conditions men to be sexually assertive and to marry virgins and which teaches women to fear the men who court them. Taggart interprets the male-female dialogue voiced through storytelling by linking the content of specific tales to the life experiences and gender of the storyteller. Men and women, he finds, carry out an exchange of ideas by retelling the same stories and altering the plots and characters to express their respective views of courtship. This indirect narrative dialogue conveys an understanding of the opposite sex and establishes a common model of marriage that permits men and women to overcome their fear of each other and bond in heterosexual love.

"You're doomed to remain idle. You're imprisoned in yourself in a state of nothingness, unless you start teaching what you know online." Anna Kow handed Sara a box of tissues as her tears rolled down into her collar. "Is there any reason for my existing?" Anna asked me. Sara looked at Anna, not at me. There was a pause of silence. "I'm hiring you as my mentor even though you're a visual anthropologist and a journalist," Anna said in a throaty voice. "Do you mind?" "I'll squeeze you into my girdle," Consuelo said. "Mentoring you won't work at this early stage. I'll put you down for one-on-one, starting this evening at seven in my office-without Sara." Consuelo jotted Anna's name and phone number in her appointment book. "How do you like being mother to the world?" Anna asked. "Someone's already asked me that before, when I wrapped a young woman in a blanket and asked her to tell me what she felt like as she confessed her anger at her betrayer." What happens when an extreme liberal meets an extreme conservative? Are they diagnosed with a mental disease or a character disorder? Or is it all a publicity campaign? In a novel of intrigue, will the anthropologist return a tougher soldier than ever? Two females pit their wits in a game and adventure that takes them half way around the world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ancient Maya city of Lakam Ha has a new, young ruler, K'inich Janaab Pakal. His mother and prior ruler, Sak K’uk, has selected his wife, the next queen. Lalak is a shy and homely young woman from a nearby city who relates better to animals than people. She is chosen as Pakal’s wife because of her pristine lineage to B’aakal dynasty founders ̶ but also because she is no beauty. Arriving at Lakam Ha, she is overwhelmed by its sophisticated, complex society and expectations of the royal court. Her mother-in-law, Sak K’uk, is critical and hostile, resenting any intrusion between herself and her son. She chose Lalak to avoid being displaced in Pakal’s affections, and does everything she can to keep it this way. The official name she confers on Lalak exposes her view of the girl as a breeder of future rulers: Tz’aabk’u Ahau, the Accumulator of Lords who sets the royal succession. Lalak struggles to learn her new role and prove her worth, facing challenges in her relationship with Pakal, for he is enamored of a beautiful woman banished from Lakam Ha by his mother. Pakal’s esthetic tastes and love of beauty affect his view of his homely wife. Lalak, however, is fated to play a pivotal role in Pakal’s mission to restore the spiritual portal to the Triad Gods that was destroyed in a devastating attack by archenemy Kan. Through learning sexual alchemy, Lalak brings the immense creative force of sacred union to rebuild the portal, but first Pakal must come to view his wife in a new light. In modern times, ten years after the discovery of the Red Queen's tomb, archeologist Francesca is studying new research about this mysterious royal woman in Mérida, Mexico. She teams up with British linguist Charlie to decipher an ancient manuscript left by her deceased grandmother. It provides clues about her grandmother's secrets that propel them into exploring her family history in a remote Maya village.
Book Synopsis Worlding America by : Oliver Scheiding
Download or read book Worlding America written by Oliver Scheiding and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 2014-10-22 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Worlding America explores the circulation of short narratives in the early Americas through a combination of neglected primary materials and scholarly commentary. Building on recent reconsiderations of American literature in light of transnational and hemispheric approaches, it follows the migration of stories from various backgrounds and demonstrates how forms and themes developed in a new literary market that spanned the Atlantic world. While short narratives prior to 1800 have been largely excluded from critical discussions as well as anthologies, they give insight into the conditions of publishing and writing as well as the demand for brief, entertaining pieces that was met by a wide variety of sources, including sermons, letters, diaries, travelogues, and, eventually, magazines and newspapers. Breaking with traditional concepts of period, authorship, and genre, Worlding America groups the different types of narratives it anthologizes according to key subject areas such as "Life Writing," "Female Agency," or the "Cultures of Print." Each section is introduced by a headnote that explains relevant historical and literary developments, situating each narrative in its cultural context and providing its publication history. Suggestions for further reading will also be appreciated by scholars and students wishing to pursue research in these underrepresented forms.
