Book excerpt: The game is on in this fun-filled middle grade debut about chess, girl power, and performance anxiety in sports, perfect for fans of Kelly Yang and Celia C. Pérez! The clock is ticking for May Li, whose middle-school chess team just earned a victory at the state championship—and with it, a ticket to nationals. What’s even more exciting is that May got an award for being the top female player and a splashy feature in the biggest chess magazine in the country. May should be thrilled. But some of her teammates, including her supposed-to-be-friend Ralph, aren’t too pleased with the attention she’s getting—and they’re even questioning her skills. Backed into a corner, but not one to back down, May makes a move as bold as any of her chess tactics: She bets Ralph she can win the school’s internal tournament and be chosen as team captain for nationals. The crown is May’s for the taking . . . except she’s starting to crumble under the weight of everyone’s expectations. Anxious feelings begin to affect her performance and, what’s worse, eat away at her love for the game. Now May is left to wonder: Can you still play for fun when you’re playing to win?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Major League Baseball is experiencing a period of distinct uncertainty. Average game attendance has fallen since the 1994 strike. Congress has called into question baseball's presumed antitrust exemption. Broadcast rights disputes for popular teams have created complications for fans. However, new stadium facilities and, more important, the renewed excitement brought to the game by shattered batting records and the blazing pitchers of the late 90's brought fans back. A strike was narrowly averted at the end of the 2002 season, a campaign that yielded one of the most exciting post-seasons yet, with the unlikely Anaheim Angels claiming the coveted World Series trophy.Beneath these encouraging developments deep problems persist within Major League Baseball. Though a labor agreement was finally reached between players and owners, the specter of another dispute looms in the minds of fans. The new agreement, while a positive step, introduces several perverse incentives and will only make a modest dent in baseball's economic deformities. While Commissioner Bud Selig's proposal to eliminate two under-performing franchises was put on hold, the Players Association has agreed not to challenge an owner effort to contract two teams before the 2007 season. Beyond that, Selig himself has become the object of controversy, as questions regarding his possible conflicts of interest and poor leadership taint his reign over baseball. Disputes surrounding the establishment of regional sports networks, such as New York's YES network, make it more difficult and expensive for fans to watch their favorite teams. Tough questions about baseball's presumed special antitrust status have been raised by many, including an official Congressional inquiry. This book explores the abuses and inefficiencies in the functioning of the baseball industry and how these problems are directly connected to Major League Baseball's monopoly status, its presumed exemption from antitrust regulation, and public policy. Andrew Zimbalist, a noted sports economist, spares no criticism for baseball's current leadership. He asserts that the biggest problem for baseball remains the economic realities of its monopolistic practices. The absence of competitive pressure has bred arrogance, laxity, and inefficiency in Major League Baseball, according to Zimbalist. Among other recommendations, he argues that lifting the presumed exemption would allow government and judicial oversight, with an eye toward ending the abuses.May the Best Team Win provides a solid, hard-hitting analysis of the current state of America's pastime. Easily accessible and highly informative, it is bound to become a standard reference tool for fans seeking a deeper understanding of the important issues

A number of ideas and terms in it have become part of the standard vocabulary, such as the distinction between ""ideal-regarding"" and ""want-regarding"" principles and the division of principles into aggregative and distributive. The book provided the first precise analysis of the concept of political values having trade-off relations and its analysis of the notion of the public interest has also been significant.

Even before COVID-19 upended lives and forced people to reimagine every interaction, “business as usual” tottered on its last legs. An overwhelmingly digital economy dispatched a bricks-and-mortar mindset and gave rise to a brave new mobile world. While top sellers adapted from a sell-to model to a buy-from environment—in which customers move through much of the buying cycle before ever engaging sellers—others stuck to their guns and found themselves condemned to failure. The bottom line: accept and embrace change or be done in sales. Right on the Money offers a compelling blueprint to understand and win over today’s buyers. It also offers a wealth of field-tested, actionable steps to excel in a marketplace far more digital, far less centralized, incredibly dynamic and much more lucrative than ever before. Colleen Francis sheds light on the current sales landscape and helps readers align personal and organizational strategies to win.

By linking general moral principles and practical cases, the book develops a contemporary theory of fair play. The book examines many of the key issues in the ethics of sport, including: * fairness and justice in sport * moral and immoral interpretation of 'athletic performance' * what makes a 'good competition' * the key values of competitive sport. The notion of fair play is integral to sport as we know and experience it, and is commonly seen as a necessary ethos if competitive sport is to survive and flourish. Fair Play in Sport provides an invaluable guide to the subject for all those with an interest in ethics and the philosophy of sport.

Book excerpt: In Baseball Rebels Peter Dreier and Robert Elias examine the key social challenges—racism, sexism and homophobia—that shaped society and worked their way into baseball’s culture, economics, and politics. Since baseball emerged in the mid-1800s to become America’s pastime, the nation’s battles over race, gender, and sexuality have been reflected on the playing field, in the executive suites, in the press box, and in the community. Some of baseball’s rebels are widely recognized, but most of them are either little known or known primarily for their baseball achievements—not their political views and activism. Everyone knows the story of Jackie Robinson breaking baseball’s color line, but less known is Sam Nahem, who opposed the racial divide in the U.S. military and organized an integrated military team that won a championship in 1945. Or Toni Stone, the first of three women who played for the Indianapolis Clowns in the previously all-male Negro Leagues. Or Dave Pallone, MLB’s first gay umpire. Many players, owners, reporters, and other activists challenged both the baseball establishment and society’s status quo. Baseball Rebels tells stories of baseball’s reformers and radicals who were influenced by, and in turn influenced, America’s broader political and social protest movements, making the game—and society—better along the way.
