Book Synopsis Ideal of the Courtly Gentleman in Spanish Literature: by : Francesco Raimondo
Download or read book Ideal of the Courtly Gentleman in Spanish Literature: written by Francesco Raimondo and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2013-05-16 with total page 343 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this study on the subject of the Spanish courtly gentleman of the sixteenth century, the author traces the courtly gentlemans life ideals as they appear first in Montalvos Amadis de Gaula and later in Il Cortegiano of Castiglione. The study also appraises what new perspectives and attitudes are at the center of Castigliones view of cortegiania and how these elements are reflected in other Spanish courtesy books subsequent to The Courtiers arrival and publication in Spain. In the last part of the book, the author deals with the theme of courtliness in Don Quixote and with Cervantess attitude toward the courtiers pursuits, aspirations, and lifestyle. He also analyzes, through the study of selected works of Caldern and Gracin, certain problems of self-perception, moral conscience, and outlook that distinguish the ideal man of the baroque age, as envisioned by these authors, from his renaissance counterpart. On the whole, the study points to the gradual change and process of secularization of the courtiers ideal during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries and to the decline of traditional thought and myths about class limitations and human potential.

Book Synopsis Fuerza de la Costumbre by : Guillén de Castro
Download or read book Fuerza de la Costumbre written by Guillén de Castro and published by Aris and Phillips Hispanic Cla. This book was released on 2019 with total page 383 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is gender learned or innate? This controversial play asks the question: what happens if you raise a boy to sew and behave as a girl, and raise his sister to fight as a soldier? For the first time ever, Guillén de Castro's La fuerza de la costumbre ('The Force of Habit') will be available to English and Spanish audiences with a performance-tested translation on facing pages. Castro's plot is unique in that, unlike other cross dressing plays, the children do not traverse gender boundaries by choice; instead complications arising from their parents' problematic marriage dictate the gender they should perform. This new Spanish edition (the first since 1927) and performance-tested English translation will begin a new discussion of this understudied work and its implications among Hispanists, comparatists, performance theorists, and gender scholars. The critical apparatus includes a biography of the author, textual history, editorial methodology, metrical analysis, bibliography and notes on the text. Machit's introductory essay, 'Bad Habits: Gender Made and Remade in La fuerza de la costumbre' aims to contextualize and investigate the most salient questions raised by Castro's gender-bending play.

A member of the theatrical Kemble family and the subject of much of the era's celebrity tattle, she jokingly concluded that she would rather gossip about herself than have others do it for her. Based on her personal letters of 40 years, this charming work recounts for Kemble's fans what she hopes will be an entertaining, if not, poignant life of an independent woman making her way in the Victorian era.British author FRANCES ANNE KEMBLE (1809-1893) was an outspoken abolitionist and later in life became an inspiration to author Henry James. Her most popular books are Journal of a Residence on a Georgian Plantation (1863) and Records of Later Life (1882).
