Book excerpt: For centuries, Abu Shuja al-Asfahani's legal primer "Matn al-Ghayat wa-l-Taqrib" ("The Ultimate Conspectus") has been a standard text for introducing students of the Shafii school of Islamic law to the full range of basic legal issues. Students will often start their studies by reading it from a basic commentary with their instructor. Many students will read it again from more advanced commentaries as they progress in their mastery of the subject. This volume presents an amiable commentary that makes Abu Shuja's primer accessible to new students. It uses contemporary language and examples to help readers build a sound foundation in Islamic law. "The Accessible Conspectus" is a perfect companion to "The Ultimate Conspectus."

Book excerpt: This text first published in 2014 presented a deconstruction of 21st century Salafi Jihadi discourse of Jihad is war of Sunni Islam by select discursive agents of this discourse. The abiding finding of this deconstruction is the reality that Salafi Jihadi discourse of Jihad is war is rooted in North Atlantic white supremacist humanist secular atheist imperialist colonialist discourse not Qur'anic discourse, this discourse is then shirk. Events in Islam since 2014 demanded a revision of this 2014 work and the war of genocide against Gaza, the largest open-air prison in the world today, by the zionists and massa from October 2023 demanded that this task be completed. The new edition has been extensively reviewed, a new section added to the chapter on Al-Awlaki and a new chapter added on the discourse of Al-Suri. The war of genocide against Gaza has proven once again the complicity of the munafiqun of Islam with massa in their futile attempt to silence Qur'anic discourse. This text was written by a Muslim of the west for Muslims of the west.

This disciple of Imam Ghazali (RA) kept thinking along these lines for a few days and then wrote a letter to Imam Ghazali (RA) with the view of getting an answer to his dilemma along with some other questions. Furthermore, he asked in his letter to Imam Ghazali (RA) for some advice and to teach him a supplication that he could always recite. He wrote in his letter that although Imam Ghazali (RA) has written numerous books on this issue, this weak individual is in need of something that he could always study and always act upon its injunctions. In reply to his letter, Imam Ghazali (RA) sent him the following advices.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tawheed is to single out Allaah in all types of worship whether it is connected to the heart, or in speech or in actions. All worship is to be directed to the Lord of the Worlds, the only One who has the right to be worshipped in truth. Allaah is the only One deserving of worship since he is the Only Creator, Only Sustainer, the Owner of the Day of Judgement, Owner of everything in existence and the one who gives life and death. To direct worship to other than Allaah is the ultimate crime, the greatest oppression one can commit, it is the crime of Shirk. A person who commits Shirk is expelled from the fold of Islaam and all his deeds are nullified by Allaah. So therefore every Muslim should have knowledge of what is Tawheed since this is the greatest right of Allaah upon His creation, it is the ultimate justice to give the right of worship to the One who deserves it. And also to know what negates this Tawheed which is Shirk and how to avoid this ultimate crime. To have knowledge of these matters is obligatory upon every Muslim, male and female. Shaykh Al-Fawzan has explained this in detail and it is recommended that a person continuously learns Tawheed, implements it in his life , for indeed every goodness , happiness is connected to the implementation of Tawheed in belief and action.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "It is the most comprehensive and useful abridgement to be found in Mālikī fiqh." (Farīd al-Anṣārī Mafhūm al-'Ālimiyyah) The works of Ibn Juzayy partake of a particular miraculous quality of the last of the Messengers of Allah, may Allah bless him and them and grant them peace: they unite concision and comprehensiveness. Comprehensively, the author presents both the range of judgments within the school of the People of Madīnah as well as the range of judgments among the madhhabs at large, but with concision in a single modest Arabic volume. He covers not only 'aqīdah and 'ibādāt but also mu'āmalāt, other matters of taṣawwuf, and yet others pertaining to history, i.e. the sīrah of the Messenger ﷺ, the khulafā' and Andalus. His main concern is to say with clarity what the dīn IS, and then to note the legitimate differences, and sometimes the illegitimate ones in order to dismiss them. To show the spectrum of valid differences is vitally important in the age of literalism that says "tell me the ṣaḥīḥ hadith so that I can act on it" or in its Mālikī version, "tell me the well-known judgment (mashhūr)." The author carefully lets the reader know the well-known judgments (mashhūr) but sets them within the spectrum of valid judgments from the luminaries among Mālik's students, such as Ibn al-Qāsim, Ashhab, Aṣbagh, Ibn Wahb and Ibn al-Mājishūn et al, who, it is well to remember, may simply be acting on what they learnt from Mālik himself. Following Ibn Juzayy's own division of his work into two parts, we here publish Volume 2 containing the chapters on mu'āmalāt and miscellaneous chapters on the sīrah, history of the khalīfahs and of Andalusia, and matters of the tongue and heart etc. Ibn Juzayy was Abu-l-Qāsim Muḥammad ibn Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad ibn 'Abdullāh ibn Yaḥyā ibn 'Abd ar-Raḥmān ibn Yūsuf ibn Sa'īd ibn Juzayy al-Kalbī. He was born on the 19th Rabī' al-Awwal in 693 AH/1294 CE. He mastered the essential sciences of the dīn, and wrote significant works on tafsīr, hadith, 'aqīdah, taṣawwuf, qirā'āt (recitations and rescensions of the Qur'ān) and uṣūl al-fiqh. He died as a shahīd in the Battle of Tareef on Monday 7th Jumāda-l-Ūlā 741 AH/30th October 1340 CE. Dr. Asadullah Yate (Cantab.) has translated works from Arabic, Persian, German and French, and, in collaboration with others, from Turkish. He teaches Arabic and Fiqh at the Weimar Institute, and is Imam al-Khateeb at the mosque of Stralsund, Germany.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Book Of Remembrances [Kitab al-Adhkar] – By Imam Yahya ibn Sharaf an-Nawawi Kitab al-Adhkar is the definitive compilation of words of remembrance and glorification of (dhikr), and supplicatory prayer to (du’a), the Lord of the Universe, as related from His final Emissary, the Prophet Muhammad (may Allah bless and exalt him). Dhikr and du’a lie at the very heart of the din, the relationship between creature and Creator. As part of the Sunna or Prophetic Way, they are a divinely appointed means of approaching Allah Most High for all our needs, and of making use of all the moments of daily life to strengthen our tawhid, the existential and cognitive Unity that is the hallmark of Muslim spirituality. Also covered are the vital principles of speaking only what is good and avoiding the sins of the tongue. The author, Muhy al-Din Yahya ibn Sharaf al-Nawawi (631-676/123-1277) devoted his entire life to the pursuit of sacred knowledge. He is revered throughout the Sunni world as one of its greatest authorities. Among his most famous writings are the Arba’in, a collection of forty Hadiths; a commentary on the Sahih of Imam Muslim; and Kitab al-Adhkar. Designed as a reference guide and a source of inspiration, this volume presents a clear and elegant English translation of Imam al-Nawawis classic, together with the text of every single prayer and invocation, both in Arabic letters and in romanisation. Also included are all the authors statements about those Hadiths which he related personally from his own teachers, and his guidance on the correct spelling and meanings of rare words and names. Finally, al-Nawawi's comments on the sources of Hadiths are supplemented by further scholarly notes.

Book excerpt: This volume presents an original commentary for Al-Tadhkirah (The Memorandum), a legal primer for Islamic Law according to the later scholars of the Shāfiʿī school by Ibn al-Mulaqqin, an Egyptian scholar who died in 804AH/1401CE. The commentary introduces essential evidence for the core issues of Islamic Law from its primary sources (the Quran, Sunnah, legal analogy, and scholarly consensus). The commentary is based on Ibn al-Mulaqqin's legal commentaries (Sharḥ Mukhtaṣar al-Tabrīrzī, Khulāṣat al-fatāwī, and ʿUjālat al-muḥtāj) and works on legal hadiths (Tuḥfat al-muḥtāj, Mukhtaṣar al-Badr al-munīr, and Al-Badr al-munīr). The Evident Memorandum helps explain why Islamic Law includes specific topics and the essential evidence behind the Shāfiʿī school's opinion. It will be most beneficial to readers who are already familiar with Islamic Law and jurisprudence.

The task of preserving hadith was taken by Allah himself by means of the Sahabah, the Tabieen and then from generation to generation through unique discipline of hadith sciences. The Sahabah understood that the Prophet ( صلى الله عليه وسلم) was the final messenger sent for mankind and that the task of preserving his teachings would fall upon their shoulders. Prophet ( صلى الله عليه وسلم) instructed them to spread his teachings to those who were absent. They used to give great concern to sitting with the Prophet ( صلى الله عليه وسلم) to hear aḥadith from him as much as possible. They would tell each other what they had learnt from the Prophet ( صلى الله عليه وسلم). The Prophet ( صلى الله عليه وسلم) also warned them in strong words about narrating anything from him which is not authentic. At the same time, Prophet ( صلى الله عليه وسلم) had also warned, that it is a major sin to hide knowledge, whenever it is asked for. Prophet ( صلى الله عليه وسلم) did not restrict himself to giving sermons, he ( صلى الله عليه وسلم) also guided the Sahabah practically. Whenever they learnt anything from the Prophet ( صلى الله عليه وسلم) they spared no effort to bring it into practice. A Large number of the Sahabah wrote down ahadith and compiled Sahifas (booklets) after hearing them from the Prophet ( صلى الله عليه وسلم). A number of young companions devoted themselves to attaining knowledge and then passed it down to the following generations. Tabieen followed the example of Sahabah in preserving ahadith, for example, Urwah bin Zubair (nephew of Aisha), Nafi Mawla of Abdullah bin Umar and Thabit bin Aslam al-Bunani spent forty years with Anas bin Malik. Also, Amra bint Abdirrahman grew up with Aisha learning ahadith. Like the Sahabah, the Tabieen also collected and compiled ahadith in booklets which were incorporated in books by the next generation and most of those that survive today are in that form as part of other larger books like Musnad Ahmad, Saheeh al-Bukhari, Saheeh Muslim, four Sunan and so on. Scholars of ḥadith from the time of the Tabieen developed the science of al-Jarḥ wa Tadeel. This is the science of examining the narrations of different narrators to make a determination about their trustworthiness and thus authenticity of their narrations.

Book excerpt: This book has been prepared for the beginner, especially those students studying at a "madrasah". Many Arabic terminologies have been maintained with the translation in the bracket. Footnotes provide assistance for teacher in explaining the text. The students are required to be familiar with the text of Safīnat al-najāʾ. It is better if the students can memorize the Arabic text so that they gain acquaintance with the jurisprudence or at least be able to read it fluently. Every effort was made to present a precise and accurate translation with proper explanations. The explanations were mostly derived from "Kāshifat al-sajāʾ sharh Safīnat al-najāʾ", "Umdatus Salik - Reliance of the Traveller" and "al-Iqnāʿ fī halli alfāẓi matn Abī Shujāʿ". The additional chapter of Ḥajj and ʿUmrah was taken from the "Al-Fiqh al-manhaji ʿalā madhhab al-Imām al-Shāfiʿī, " and "Reliance of the Traveller".The measurements and conversions were based on the book, "al-Maqādīr al-sharʿiyyah" by Dr. Najm al-dīn al-Kurdī. Book excerpt: Ibn Juzay al-Kalbi began his exegesis of the Quran with an introduction to the various disciplines related to explaining the Quran. One of these topics he included is sufism. The basic concern of sufism is the heart: knowing its good and bad qualities, how to rid it of bad qualities, and how to instill it with the good. Sufism is connected to the Quran since the Quran mentions divine knowledge, struggling against the self (nafs), and illuminating and purifying hearts via obtaining praiseworthy character and avoiding blameworthy character. In his tafsir he then covers twelve of these topics: thanks (shukr); Godfearingness (taqwa); remembrance (dhikr); patience (sabr); tawhid; love for Allah; reliance upon Him (tawakkul); vigilance (mur'qabah); fear and hope (khawf and raja); repentance (tawbah); and sincerity (ikhl?).
