Book Synopsis Science, Seti, and Mathematics by : Carl L. DeVito
Download or read book Science, Seti, and Mathematics written by Carl L. DeVito and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2013-11-01 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mathematics is as much a part of our humanity as music and art. And it is our mathematics that might be understandable, even familiar, to a distant race and might provide the basis for mutual communication. This book discusses, in a conversational way, the role of mathematics in the search for extraterrestrial intelligence. The author explores the science behind that search, its history, and the many questions associated with it, including those regarding the nature of language and the philosophical/psychological motivation behind this search.

Book Synopsis Mathematics for the Life Sciences by : Erin N. Bodine
Download or read book Mathematics for the Life Sciences written by Erin N. Bodine and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2014-08-17 with total page 630 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An accessible undergraduate textbook on the essential math concepts used in the life sciences The life sciences deal with a vast array of problems at different spatial, temporal, and organizational scales. The mathematics necessary to describe, model, and analyze these problems is similarly diverse, incorporating quantitative techniques that are rarely taught in standard undergraduate courses. This textbook provides an accessible introduction to these critical mathematical concepts, linking them to biological observation and theory while also presenting the computational tools needed to address problems not readily investigated using mathematics alone. Proven in the classroom and requiring only a background in high school math, Mathematics for the Life Sciences doesn't just focus on calculus as do most other textbooks on the subject. It covers deterministic methods and those that incorporate uncertainty, problems in discrete and continuous time, probability, graphing and data analysis, matrix modeling, difference equations, differential equations, and much more. The book uses MATLAB throughout, explaining how to use it, write code, and connect models to data in examples chosen from across the life sciences. Provides undergraduate life science students with a succinct overview of major mathematical concepts that are essential for modern biology Covers all the major quantitative concepts that national reports have identified as the ideal components of an entry-level course for life science students Provides good background for the MCAT, which now includes data-based and statistical reasoning Explicitly links data and math modeling Includes end-of-chapter homework problems, end-of-unit student projects, and select answers to homework problems Uses MATLAB throughout, and MATLAB m-files with an R supplement are available online Prepares students to read with comprehension the growing quantitative literature across the life sciences A solutions manual for professors and an illustration package is available
Book Synopsis Mathematics And The Natural Sciences: The Physical Singularity Of Life by : Giuseppe Longo
Download or read book Mathematics And The Natural Sciences: The Physical Singularity Of Life written by Giuseppe Longo and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2011-03-04 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book identifies the organizing concepts of physical and biological phenomena by an analysis of the foundations of mathematics and physics. Our aim is to propose a dialog between different conceptual universes and thus to provide a unification of phenomena. The role of “order” and symmetries in the foundations of mathematics is linked to the main invariants and principles, among them the geodesic principle (a consequence of symmetries), which govern and confer unity to various physical theories. Moreover, an attempt is made to understand causal structures, a central element of physical intelligibility, in terms of both symmetries and symmetry breakings. A distinction between the principles of (conceptual) construction and of proofs, both in physics and in mathematics, guides most of the work. The importance of mathematical tools is also highlighted to clarify differences in the models for physics and biology that are proposed by continuous and discrete mathematics, such as computational simulations.Since biology is particularly complex and not as well understood at a theoretical level, we propose a “unification by concepts” which in any case should precede mathematization. This constitutes an outline for unification also based on highlighting conceptual differences, complex points of passage and technical irreducibilities of one field to another. Indeed, we suppose here a very common monist point of view, namely the view that living objects are “big bags of molecules”. The main question though is to understand which “theory” can help better understand these bags of molecules. They are, indeed, rather “singular”, from the physical point of view. Technically, we express this singularity through the concept of “extended criticality”, which provides a logical extension of the critical transitions that are known in physics. The presentation is mostly kept at an informal and conceptual level./a

Book Synopsis Mathematics and Technology by : Christiane Rousseau
Download or read book Mathematics and Technology written by Christiane Rousseau and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-10-29 with total page 580 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book introduces the student to numerous modern applications of mathematics in technology. The authors write with clarity and present the mathematics in a clear and straightforward way making it an interesting and easy book to read. Numerous exercises at the end of every section provide practice and reinforce the material in the chapter. An engaging quality of this book is that the authors also present the mathematical material in a historical context and not just the practical one. Mathematics and Technology is intended for undergraduate students in mathematics, instructors and high school teachers. Additionally, its lack of calculus centricity as well as a clear indication of the more difficult topics and relatively advanced references make it suitable for any curious individual with a decent command of high school math.

Book Synopsis The Role of Mathematics in Physical Sciences by : Giovanni Boniolo
Download or read book The Role of Mathematics in Physical Sciences written by Giovanni Boniolo and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2005-03-10 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Even though mathematics and physics have been related for centuries and this relation appears to be unproblematic, there are many questions still open: Is mathematics really necessary for physics, or could physics exist without mathematics? Should we think physically and then add the mathematics apt to formalise our physical intuition, or should we think mathematically and then interpret physically the obtained results? Do we get mathematical objects by abstraction from real objects, or vice versa? Why is mathematics effective into physics? These are all relevant questions, whose answers are necessary to fully understand the status of physics, particularly of contemporary physics. The aim of this book is to offer plausible answers to such questions through both historical analyses of relevant cases, and philosophical analyses of the relations between mathematics and physics.

Book Synopsis Maths for Social Sciences by : Lorenzo Peccati
Download or read book Maths for Social Sciences written by Lorenzo Peccati and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-12-28 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is aimed at students in social sciences programs that include some course in quantitative methods. Stats for social sciences is frequently the subject of textbooks, while maths for social sciences is often neglected: monographs on specific themes (like, for instance, social choice systems or game theory applications) are available, but they do not adequately cover the topic in general. This textbook stems from the Bocconi University’s new "Bachelor in Government", which was launched in 2015, and is intended for undergraduate students who do not exclude maths from their toolbox. It discusses various concrete applications in political economics, political science, sociology, and demography and explores topics like Grexit, Macron’s success, immigration effects and the Arab Spring.
