Book Synopsis The Analysis of Linear Economic Systems by : Christian Bidard
Download or read book The Analysis of Linear Economic Systems written by Christian Bidard and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-07-22 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Maurice Potron (1872-1942), a French Jesuit mathematician, constructed and analyzed a highly original, but virtually unknown economic model. This book presents translated versions of all his economic writings, preceded by a long introduction which sketches his life and environment based on extensive archival research and family documents. Potron had no education in economics and almost no contact with the economists of his time. His primary source of inspiration was the social doctrine of the Church, which had been updated at the end of the nineteenth century. Faced with the ‘economic evils’ of his time, he reacted by utilizing his talents as a mathematician and an engineer to invent and formalize a general disaggregated model in which production, employment, prices and wages are the main unknowns. He introduced four basic principles or normative conditions (‘sufficient production’, the ‘right to rest’, ‘justice in exchange’, and the ‘right to live’) to define satisfactory regimes of production and labour on the one hand, and of prices and wages on the other. He studied the conditions for the existence of these regimes, both on the quantity side and the value side, and he explored the way to implement them. This book makes it clear that Potron was the first author to develop a full input-output model, to use the Perron-Frobenius theorem in economics, to state a duality result, and to formulate the Hawkins-Simon condition. These are all techniques which now belong to the standard toolkit of economists. This book will be of interest to Economics postgraduate students and researchers, and will be essential reading for courses dealing with the history of mathematical economics in general, and linear production theory in particular. Paul A. Samuelson’s short foreword to the book may have been his last academic contribution.

Book Synopsis L' Europe mathématique/Mathematical Europe by : Catherine Goldstein
Download or read book L' Europe mathématique/Mathematical Europe written by Catherine Goldstein and published by Les Editions de la MSH. This book was released on 1996 with total page 596 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Download or read book Bergson written by Mark Sinclair and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-08-08 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Henri Bergson (1859-1941) was one of the most celebrated and influential philosophers of the twentieth century. He was awarded in 1928 the Nobel prize for literature for his philosophical work, and his controversial ideas about time, memory and life shaped generations of thinkers, writers and artists. In this clear and engaging introduction, Mark Sinclair examines the full range of Bergson's work. The book sheds new light on familiar aspects of Bergson’s thought, but also examines often ignored aspects of his work, such as his philosophy of art, his philosophy of technology and the relation of his philosophical doctrines to his political commitments. After an illuminating overview of his life and work, chapters are devoted to the following topics: the experience of time as duration the experience of freedom memory mind and body laughter and humour knowledge art and creativity the élan vital as a theory of biological life ethics, religion, war and modern technology With a final chapter on his legacy, Bergson is an outstanding guide to one of the great philosophers. Including chapter summaries, annotated further reading and a glossary, it is essential reading for those interested in metaphysics, time, free will, aesthetics, the philosophy of biology, continental philosophy and the role of European intellectuals in World War I.

Book Synopsis Louis Boutet de Monvel, Selected Works by : Victor W. Guillemin
Download or read book Louis Boutet de Monvel, Selected Works written by Victor W. Guillemin and published by Birkhäuser. This book was released on 2017-05-05 with total page 855 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book features a selection of articles by Louis Boutet de Monvel and presents his contributions to the theory of partial differential equations and analysis. The works selected here reveal his central role in the development of his field, including three cornerstones: firstly, analytic pseudodifferential operators, which have become a fundamental aspect of analytic microlocal analysis, and secondly the Boutet de Monvel calculus for boundary problems for elliptic partial differential operators, which is still an important tool also in index theory. Thirdly, Boutet de Monvel was one of the first people to recognize the importance of the existence of generalized functions, whose singularities are concentrated on a single ray in phase space, which led him to make essential contributions to hypoelliptic operators and to a very successful and influential calculus of Toeplitz operators with applications to spectral and index theory. Other topics treated here include microlocal analysis, star products and deformation quantization as well as problems in several complex variables, index theory and geometric quantization. This book will appeal to both experts in the field and students who are new to this subject.
