Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mathematics for the Accountant There is a great deal to be said in favor of the inclusion of actuarial problems and we believe that the need for knowledge of this kind will increase as time goes on. Heretofore there have been many accountants who have had practically no need to exercise any knowledge which they have possessed of actuarial matters, but with the growth of accounting work and the broadening of its scope, there must be many problems which can be solved at a great saving of time and effort if the accountant be able to deal with them with the advantage of actuarial knowledge. This requirement seems to imply a general study of com pound interest and its application to those problems which are commonly solved by simple interest. It is axiomatic that every dollar in the business world is at work; it is earning other dollars either for its owner or for someone else. At the end of every fiscal period all these earnings, after deduction of expenses, should become capital, and the same or a larger income rate should be earned on this increased capital. Such studies are compound interest and present worth, with the various aspects of interest rates; annuities, immediate, due or deferred; their amount and present worth; sinking funds and various related prob lems in valuation of assets; amortization; bond valuation in its many aspects. The main purpose of the authors in writing this book has been to make it of the greatest possible usefulness and convenience to both pupil and teacher in the actual work of classroom instruction. This general purpose has determined all its important characteristics. Material Excluded. There is clearly no room in such a book for material such as cost accounting and various other advanced topics that serve no purpose except to make a show of novelty. It is taken for granted that business arithmetic is taught at the beginning of a commercial course rather than at the end, and this book has been prepared with this clearly in mind. Drill in Fundamentals. Facility and accuracy can be attained only through drills continued over a long period of time. For this reason a drill in fundamentals is given at the end of each chapter. There are also throughout the book many pages of miscellaneous problems which can be used as material for tests. No time limits have been suggested for these drills and tests. Each class should be made to do its best under the conditions of age, preparedness, and natural ability of its members. To make this possible the matter of time for drills and tests must be decided by each teacher. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mathematics of Finance IT is the main purpose of this book to present a teachable elementary course in the application of mathematics to a broad class of financial problems. The material for the book has been obtained from many sources and tested in the teaching of such courses at three large universities. Experience has shown that the material is especially adapted to the needs of the students in schools and colleges of commerce and business administration, although general liberal arts and engineering students also find the course of much value. The man with a liberal business education should surely be thoroughly and accurately trained in the operation of interest in relation to finance. This course is designed to supply such training. In particular, this book treats of the relation of inter est to the amortization of debts, to the creation of sinking funds, to the treatment of depreciation, to the valuation of bonds, to the accumulation of funds in building and loan associations, and to the elements of life insurance. Many of these terms are employed somewhat loosely, and this is most undesirable in a science which is an important branch of applied mathematics. A large number of examples and exercises have been given, together with the solutions. These serve to elucidate the principles, and will at the same time enable the student to effectively test his progress. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mathematics of Accounting and Finance This book has been prepared as a manual of business calculation, for use in connection with the problems which continually arise in the course of business as conducted today. In deciding what subjects to include the authors have been guided throughout by the desire to make the book directly useful in business offices, particularly to persons working in accounting and in the various lines of finance. There are many school texts on commercial arithmetic, but they are necessarily too rudimentary to be of much aid to readers of mature experience. No space has been given here to a consideration of the elementary and fundamental processes of mathematics. The effort has been, instead, to present material of more advanced nature which has not been generally available. This material falls into three general classes. The earlier chapters explain in considerable detail a number of short processes and practical suggestions that may be applied in routine computations of any sort. Particular attention has been given to the matter of adequate checks upon calculations. The central portion of the book treats of the special applications of arithmetical principles and short methods to the problems of individual lines of business. In the final chapters an attempt has been made to explain, in simple terms, convenient ways of using logarithmic and actuarial methods in the solution of business problems relating to compound interest, investments, annuities, bond discount and premium, effective bond rates, leaseholds and depreciation. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mathematics for the Accountant This book is the outgrowth of a course which has been given for several years in the School of Commerce and Finance of Northeastern College. It has always been the policy of the School to give its students a thorough training in all phases of accountancy, and annuity studies have been considered a part of the training for that profession. While the course is forming in the early part of the year, it has seemed well to treat some elementary subjects which frequently appear in C. P. A. examinations, such as averaging of accounts and foreign exchange, and at the end of the year it has seemed practical to include a few lectures on the slide rule. A new impetus was given to one work by an editorial which appeared in the Journal of Accountancy for August, 1918. By that editorial the American Institute of Accountants committed itself definitely to the policy of requiring certain annuity studies of all candidates for its examinations. The editorial read in part as follows: "The scope of the examination in Actuarial Science is to include certain problems relative to interest and annuities, certain sinking funds, loans repayable by installments, and so forth, and also the construction and use of tables relating thereto. In other words, the candidate will be expected to answer questions based upon a knowledge which will have been obtained in the study of algebra. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Business Arithmetic The text has been addressed to the pupil, such approach being made as will make the subject of Arithmetic interesting. Problems have been selected that grow out of the everyday activities of school, home, society and business. Special care has been given to methods. The authors' aim has been to climi nate all unnecessary figures and thus save both time and labor. Where more than one method could be used, the figures have been shown side by side for comparison and discussion. Im portant features have been emphasized, those less' important treated briefly, and all matter considered of very little use to the business man has been eliminated. Abundant drills in prac tical business problems are given so that the pupil may acquire skill and accuracy in making the detailed calculations of a busi ness office. Machines are often used for the detail work, but since the machines are not always available, the pupil should be taught to handle figures rapidly. It is a known fact that a person who handles figures well can operate a machine with more ease and rapidity. Emphasis is placed on the relation of numbers, as shown in common and decimal fractions and in percentage, special care being taken to show the interrelation of these three studies. Mental work is emphasized throughout. Many oral exercises are given preceding, and in conjunction with, written drills. The subjects of Percentage, Profit and Loss, Interest, Stocks and Bonds, Investments, etc., are approached from the stand point of accounting, business administration, and economics. This is an effort to properly correlate Arithmetic with these subjects. Authorities on these subjects were consulted freely. Every child who completes the sixth grade will know something of being accurate and business-like about his own earning, spending, and saving. He will compre hend the simplest methods of accounting which are to aid him in his own modest affairs, whether these relate to the industrial payroll, the farm income, the household expendi ture, or the savings in the bank. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Accounting Theory and Practice: A First Year Text The present volume gives the scope of the work in accounting offered in the first year of the School of Busi ness of Columbia University, and is an effort to mark out and define the portion Of the whole subject which can be handled effectively in one year's time. There is a real demand for a one-year course which will treat the subject in a general way and give a brief view of the entire field. The author believes, however, that accounting in its broadest sense is just beginning to receive the consideration which it deserves and that more and more is recognition being given to the necessity of a thorough knowledge of its principles and their application, for effec tive work in all lines of business activity. Accordingly, the material in this first volume is not presented to meet the demand of the casual reader or of the student seeking a bird's-eye view of the entire field, since much of the sub jcet matter is reserved for presentation in a second volume which the author hopes to have ready in the course of another year. In that will be taken up a more detailed treatment of the balance sheet in connection with its prob lem of valuation; various aspects of the corporation and of the income statement, not adequately handled in this vol ume; together with some miscellaneous topics, including forms of special statements, branch accounting, sinking funds, and other similar subjects. In fact, part hership adjustments and liquidations as a rule require more of the mathematical ability to do abstract reason ing than a technical training in accounting. In other words, most partnership problems would be easily possible of solution if one did not understand even the meaning Of debit and credit.
