Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mathematics of Finance IT is the main purpose of this book to present a teachable elementary course in the application of mathematics to a broad class of financial problems. The material for the book has been obtained from many sources and tested in the teaching of such courses at three large universities. Experience has shown that the material is especially adapted to the needs of the students in schools and colleges of commerce and business administration, although general liberal arts and engineering students also find the course of much value. The man with a liberal business education should surely be thoroughly and accurately trained in the operation of interest in relation to finance. This course is designed to supply such training. In particular, this book treats of the relation of inter est to the amortization of debts, to the creation of sinking funds, to the treatment of depreciation, to the valuation of bonds, to the accumulation of funds in building and loan associations, and to the elements of life insurance. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mathematics for the Accountant There is a great deal to be said in favor of the inclusion of actuarial problems and we believe that the need for knowledge of this kind will increase as time goes on. Heretofore there have been many accountants who have had practically no need to exercise any knowledge which they have possessed of actuarial matters, but with the growth of accounting work and the broadening of its scope, there must be many problems which can be solved at a great saving of time and effort if the accountant be able to deal with them with the advantage of actuarial knowledge. This requirement seems to imply a general study of com pound interest and its application to those problems which are commonly solved by simple interest. It is axiomatic that every dollar in the business world is at work; it is earning other dollars either for its owner or for someone else. At the end of every fiscal period all these earnings, after deduction of expenses, should become capital, and the same or a larger income rate should be earned on this increased capital. Such studies are compound interest and present worth, with the various aspects of interest rates; annuities, immediate, due or deferred; their amount and present worth; sinking funds and various related prob lems in valuation of assets; amortization; bond valuation in its many aspects. Book excerpt: This is the eBook of the printed book and may not include any media, website access codes, or print supplements that may come packaged with the bound book. For courses in Actuarial Mathematics, Introduction to Insurance, and Personal/Business Finance. This text presents the basic core of information needed to understand the impact of interest rates on the world of investments, real estate, corporate planning, insurance, and securities transactions. The authors presuppose a working knowledge of basic algebra, arithmetic, and percents for the core of the book: their goal is for students to understand well those few underlying principles that play out in nearly every finance and interest problem. There are several sections that utilize calculus and one chapter that requires statistics. Using time line diagrams as important tools in analyzing money and interest exercises, the text contains a great deal of practical financial applications of interest theory as well as its foundational definitions and theorems. It relies on the use of calculator and computer technology instead of tables; this approach frees students to understand challenging topics without wilting under labor-intensive details.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mathematics for the Accountant This book is the outgrowth of a course which has been given for several years in the School of Commerce and Finance of Northeastern College. It has always been the policy of the School to give its students a thorough training in all phases of accountancy, and annuity studies have been considered a part of the training for that profession. While the course is forming in the early part of the year, it has seemed well to treat some elementary subjects which frequently appear in C. P. A. examinations, such as averaging of accounts and foreign exchange, and at the end of the year it has seemed practical to include a few lectures on the slide rule. A new impetus was given to one work by an editorial which appeared in the Journal of Accountancy for August, 1918. By that editorial the American Institute of Accountants committed itself definitely to the policy of requiring certain annuity studies of all candidates for its examinations. The editorial read in part as follows: "The scope of the examination in Actuarial Science is to include certain problems relative to interest and annuities, certain sinking funds, loans repayable by installments, and so forth, and also the construction and use of tables relating thereto. In other words, the candidate will be expected to answer questions based upon a knowledge which will have been obtained in the study of algebra. Since classical financial mathematics makes do with elementary mathematical tools, any interested reader with average mathematical school knowledge can easily follow this text. The core of the text is the calculation of interest and compound interest, annuity calculation, amortization calculation and price calculation. A large number of practical examples illustrate the mathematical questions. This book is a translation of the original German 1st edition Klassische Finanzmathematik by Bernd Luderer, published by Springer Fachmedien Wiesbaden GmbH, part of Springer Nature in 2019. The translation was done with the help of artificial intelligence (machine translation by the service DeepL.com). Many of these terms are employed somewhat loosely, and this is most undesirable in a science which is an important branch of applied mathematics. A large number of examples and exercises have been given, together with the solutions. These serve to elucidate the principles, and will at the same time enable the student to effectively test his progress. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Simple Theory of Financial Ratios as Predictors of Failure Several years ago William Beaver published a Very interesting article reporting an empirical study of various financial ratios as predictors of failure.1 Using matched samples of failed firms versus non-failed firms, he found that several easily available financial ratios were good predictors of failure, while others, probably more widely used, were mediocre predictors.2 Specifically the criterion ratios cash flow/total assets, net income/total assets, total debt/total assets and particularly cash flow/total debt were good predictors of failure, the latter even up to five years before the event, while such widely used ratios as the current ratio were of only mediocre value until the final year before failure, and even then inferior to the.aforementioned ratios. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Theory of Finance: Being a Short Treatise on the Doctrine of Interest and Annuities-Certain The following treatise consists of Notes of Lectures on Interest and Annuities-Certain, delivered to the Students for the Intermediate Examination of the Institute of Actuaries. The course of lectures includes also the mathematical theory of Life Contingencies; and the author's intention originally was, to have edited and published the whole of his notes under the title of the Elements of Actuarial Science. The absence of such a guide is very much felt by students; and although it has long been the declared intention of the Institute to bring out a complete d104-Book, yet it was thought that a less pretentious work, speedily published, would in the meantime fill up the gap, while afterwards it might serve as a useful introduction to the more elaborate volume. At the close of last year the author accepted the invitation, with which he was honoured by the Council of the Institute of Actuaries, to prepare that part of their d104-Book which is to treat of the Science of Life Contingencies, and his original intention therefore fell to the ground. Book excerpt: An introduction to the mathematical skills needed to understand finance and make better financial decisions Mathematical Finance enables readers to develop the mathematical skills needed to better understand and solve financial problems that arise in business, from small entrepreneurial operations to large corporations, and to also make better personal financial decisions. Despite the availability of automated tools to perform financial calculations, the author demonstrates that a basic grasp of the underlying mathematical formulas and tables is essential to truly understand finance. The book begins with an introduction to the most fundamental mathematical concepts, including numbers, exponents, and logarithms; mathematical progressions; and statistical measures. Next, the author explores the mathematics of the time value of money through a discussion of simple interest, bank discount, compound interest, and annuities. Subsequent chapters explore the mathematical aspects of various financial scenarios, including: Mortgage debt, leasing, and credit and loans Capital budgeting, depreciation, and depletion Break-even analysis and leverage Investing, with coverage of stocks, bonds, mutual funds, options, cost of capital, and ratio analysis Return and risk, along with a discussion of the Capital Asset Pricing Model (CAPM) Life annuities as well as life, property, and casualty insurance Throughout the book, numerous examples and exercises present realistic financial scenarios that aid readers in applying their newfound mathematical skills to devise solutions. The author does not promote the use of financial calculators and computers, but rather guides readers through problem solving using formulas and tables with little emphasis on derivations and proofs. Extensively class-tested to ensure an easy-to-follow presentation, Mathematical Finance is an excellent book for courses in business, economics, and mathematics of finance at the upper-undergraduate and graduate levels. The book is also appropriate for consumers and entrepreneurs who need to build their mathematical skills in order to better understand financial problems and make better financial choices.
