Download or read book Modeling and Simulation in Medicine and the Life Sciences written by Frank C. Hoppensteadt and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The result of lectures given by the authors at New York University, the University of Utah, and Michigan State University, the material is written for students who have had only one term of calculus, but it contains material that can be used in modeling courses in applied mathematics at all levels through early graduate courses. Numerous exercises are given as well as solutions to selected exercises, so as to lead readers to discover interesting extensions of that material. Throughout, illustrations depict physiological processes, population biology phenomena, corresponding models, and the results of computer simulations. Topics covered range from population phenomena to demographics, genetics, epidemics and dispersal; in physiological processes, including the circulation, gas exchange in the lungs, control of cell volume, the renal counter-current multiplier mechanism, and muscle mechanics; to mechanisms of neural control. Each chapter is graded in difficulty, so a reading of the first parts of each provides an elementary introduction to the processes and their models.

Book Synopsis Towards a Mathematical Theory of Complex Biological Systems by : Carlo Bianca
Download or read book Towards a Mathematical Theory of Complex Biological Systems written by Carlo Bianca and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2011 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph has the ambitious aim of developing a mathematical theory of complex biological systems with special attention to the phenomena of ageing, degeneration and repair of biological tissues under individual self-repair actions that may have good potential in medical therapy. The approach to mathematically modeling biological systems needs to tackle the additional difficulties generated by the peculiarities of living matter. These include the lack of invariance principles, abilities to express strategies for individual fitness, heterogeneous behaviors, competition up to proliferative and/or destructive actions, mutations, learning ability, evolution and many others. Applied mathematicians in the field of living systems, especially biological systems, will appreciate the special class of integro-differential equations offered here for modeling at the molecular, celular and tissue scales. A unique perspective is also presented with a number of case studies in biological modeling.

Book Synopsis Quantitative Methods in Biological and Medical Sciences by : H.O. Lancaster
Download or read book Quantitative Methods in Biological and Medical Sciences written by H.O. Lancaster and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My original intention was to write a history of medical statistics, used in its prewar sense, expanding the writings on the subject by Major Greenwood, from which I formed many of my ideas in the early days immediately after the Second World War. In later years, I decided that the scope of his works was narrower than what I think is appropriate now, for he was writing in an era before the acceptance and use of the Fisherian methods and he was probably not aware of the mathematization of many parts of biological theory. Further, the boundary between the medical and biological sciences has largely disappeared. Many texts have now been written on branches of the theory and practice inspired by R. A. Fisher (see §4. 13). I discuss the history of the use of quantitative methods in the biological sciences, defined after the style of Peller (1967) as that branch of science that uses a quantitative approach to, or quantitative logical reasoning on, or biology. The mathematical tech any issue having to do with medicine niques are various and not classified here. Within the book I use "biological sciences" to include medicine but use the longer phrase in its title to avoid misunderstandings as to content. Moreover, most of the experimental work carried out in medical research laboratories is performed on animals other than man.

Download or read book Applications of Calculus to Biology and Medicine written by Nathan C Ryan and published by World Scientific Publishing Company. This book was released on 2017-08-17 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biology majors and pre-health students at many colleges and universities are required to take a semester of calculus but rarely do such students see authentic applications of its techniques and concepts. Applications of Calculus to Biology and Medicine: Case Studies from Lake Victoria is designed to address this issue: it prepares students to engage with the research literature in the mathematical modeling of biological systems, assuming they have had only one semester of calculus. The text includes projects, problems and exercises: the projects ask the students to engage with the research literature, problems ask the students to extend their understanding of the materials and exercises ask the students to check their understanding as they read the text. Students who successfully work their way through the text will be able to engage in a meaningful way with the research literature to the point that they would be able to make genuine contributions to the literature. Download or read book Mathematical Methods in Biology written by J. David Logan and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2009-08-17 with total page 437 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A one-of-a-kind guide to using deterministic and probabilistic methods for solving problems in the biological sciences Highlighting the growing relevance of quantitative techniques in scientific research, Mathematical Methods in Biology provides an accessible presentation of the broad range of important mathematical methods for solving problems in the biological sciences. The book reveals the growing connections between mathematics and biology through clear explanations and specific, interesting problems from areas such as population dynamics, foraging theory, and life history theory. The authors begin with an introduction and review of mathematical tools that are employed in subsequent chapters, including biological modeling, calculus, differential equations, dimensionless variables, and descriptive statistics. The following chapters examine standard discrete and continuous models using matrix algebra as well as difference and differential equations. Finally, the book outlines probability, statistics, and stochastic methods as well as material on bootstrapping and stochastic differential equations, which is a unique approach that is not offered in other literature on the topic. In order to demonstrate the application of mathematical methods to the biological sciences, the authors provide focused examples from the field of theoretical ecology, which serve as an accessible context for study while also demonstrating mathematical skills that are applicable to many other areas in the life sciences. The book's algorithms are illustrated using MATLAB®, but can also be replicated using other software packages, including R, Mathematica®, and Maple; however, the text does not require any single computer algebra package. Each chapter contains numerous exercises and problems that range in difficulty, from the basic to more challenging, to assist readers with building their problem-solving skills. Selected solutions are included at the back of the book, and a related Web site features supplemental material for further study. Extensively class-tested to ensure an easy-to-follow format, Mathematical Methods in Biology is an excellent book for mathematics and biology courses at the upper-undergraduate and graduate levels. It also serves as a valuable reference for researchers and professionals working in the fields of biology, ecology, and biomathematics.

Book Synopsis Calculus for Biology and Medicine by : Claudia Neuhauser
Download or read book Calculus for Biology and Medicine written by Claudia Neuhauser and published by Prentice Hall. This book was released on 2004 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For a two-semester course in Calculus for Life Sciences. This text addresses the needs of students in the biological sciences by teaching calculus in a biological context without reducing the course level. It is a calculus text, written so that a math professor without a biology background can teach from it successfully. New concepts are introduced in a three step manner. First, a biological example motivates the topic; second, the topic is then developed via a simple mathematical example; and third the concept is tied to deeper biological examples. This allows students: to see why a concept is important; to understand how to use the concept computationally; to make sure that they can apply the concept.
Download or read book Modeling Life written by Alan Garfinkel and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-09-06 with total page 445 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book develops the mathematical tools essential for students in the life sciences to describe interacting systems and predict their behavior. From predator-prey populations in an ecosystem, to hormone regulation within the body, the natural world abounds in dynamical systems that affect us profoundly. Complex feedback relations and counter-intuitive responses are common in nature; this book develops the quantitative skills needed to explore these interactions. Differential equations are the natural mathematical tool for quantifying change, and are the driving force throughout this book. The use of Euler’s method makes nonlinear examples tractable and accessible to a broad spectrum of early-stage undergraduates, thus providing a practical alternative to the procedural approach of a traditional Calculus curriculum. Tools are developed within numerous, relevant examples, with an emphasis on the construction, evaluation, and interpretation of mathematical models throughout. Encountering these concepts in context, students learn not only quantitative techniques, but how to bridge between biological and mathematical ways of thinking. Examples range broadly, exploring the dynamics of neurons and the immune system, through to population dynamics and the Google PageRank algorithm. Each scenario relies only on an interest in the natural world; no biological expertise is assumed of student or instructor. Building on a single prerequisite of Precalculus, the book suits a two-quarter sequence for first or second year undergraduates, and meets the mathematical requirements of medical school entry. The later material provides opportunities for more advanced students in both mathematics and life sciences to revisit theoretical knowledge in a rich, real-world framework. In all cases, the focus is clear: how does the math help us understand the science?
