Book Synopsis Non-Associative Normed Algebras : Volume 2, Representation Theory and the Zel'manov Approach by : Miguel Cabrera García
Download or read book Non-Associative Normed Algebras : Volume 2, Representation Theory and the Zel'manov Approach written by Miguel Cabrera García and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2018-04-12 with total page 760 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This first systematic account of the basic theory of normed algebras, without assuming associativity, includes many new and unpublished results and is sure to become a central resource for researchers and graduate students in the field. This second volume revisits JB*-triples, covers Zel'manov's celebrated work in Jordan theory, proves the unit-free variant of the Vidav–Palmer theorem, and develops the representation theory of alternative C*-algebras and non-commutative JB*-algebras. This completes the work begun in the first volume, which introduced these algebras and discussed the so-called non-associative Gelfand–Naimark and Vidav–Palmer theorems. This book interweaves pure algebra, geometry of normed spaces, and infinite-dimensional complex analysis. Novel proofs are presented in complete detail at a level accessible to graduate students. The book contains a wealth of historical comments, background material, examples, and an extensive bibliography.
Book Synopsis Eigenfunctions of the Laplacian on a Riemannian Manifold by : Steve Zelditch
Download or read book Eigenfunctions of the Laplacian on a Riemannian Manifold written by Steve Zelditch and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2017-12-12 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eigenfunctions of the Laplacian of a Riemannian manifold can be described in terms of vibrating membranes as well as quantum energy eigenstates. This book is an introduction to both the local and global analysis of eigenfunctions. The local analysis of eigenfunctions pertains to the behavior of the eigenfunctions on wavelength scale balls. After re-scaling to a unit ball, the eigenfunctions resemble almost-harmonic functions. Global analysis refers to the use of wave equation methods to relate properties of eigenfunctions to properties of the geodesic flow. The emphasis is on the global methods and the use of Fourier integral operator methods to analyze norms and nodal sets of eigenfunctions. A somewhat unusual topic is the analytic continuation of eigenfunctions to Grauert tubes in the real analytic case, and the study of nodal sets in the complex domain. The book, which grew out of lectures given by the author at a CBMS conference in 2011, provides complete proofs of some model results, but more often it gives informal and intuitive explanations of proofs of fairly recent results. It conveys inter-related themes and results and offers an up-to-date comprehensive treatment of this important active area of research.
Book Synopsis Enumerative Combinatorics: Volume 2 by : Richard Stanley
Download or read book Enumerative Combinatorics: Volume 2 written by Richard Stanley and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2023-07-31 with total page 802 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Richard Stanley's two-volume basic introduction to enumerative combinatorics has become the standard guide to the topic for students and experts alike. This thoroughly revised second edition of volume two covers the composition of generating functions, in particular the exponential formula and the Lagrange inversion formula, labelled and unlabelled trees, algebraic, D-finite, and noncommutative generating functions, and symmetric functions. The chapter on symmetric functions provides the only available treatment of this subject suitable for an introductory graduate course and focusing on combinatorics, especially the Robinson–Schensted–Knuth algorithm. An appendix by Sergey Fomin covers some deeper aspects of symmetric functions, including jeu de taquin and the Littlewood–Richardson rule. The exercises in the book play a vital role in developing the material, and this second edition features over 400 exercises, including 159 new exercises on symmetric functions, all with solutions or references to solutions.
Book Synopsis Series and Products in the Development of Mathematics: Volume 2 by : Ranjan Roy
Download or read book Series and Products in the Development of Mathematics: Volume 2 written by Ranjan Roy and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2021-03-18 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the second volume of a two-volume work that traces the development of series and products from 1380 to 2000 by presenting and explaining the interconnected concepts and results of hundreds of unsung as well as celebrated mathematicians. Some chapters deal with the work of primarily one mathematician on a pivotal topic, and other chapters chronicle the progress over time of a given topic. This updated second edition of Sources in the Development of Mathematics adds extensive context, detail, and primary source material, with many sections rewritten to more clearly reveal the significance of key developments and arguments. Volume 1, accessible even to advanced undergraduate students, discusses the development of the methods in series and products that do not employ complex analytic methods or sophisticated machinery. Volume 2 examines more recent results, including deBranges' resolution of Bieberbach's conjecture and Nevanlinna's theory of meromorphic functions.

Book Synopsis A Primer for a Secret Shortcut to PDEs of Mathematical Physics by : Des McGhee
Download or read book A Primer for a Secret Shortcut to PDEs of Mathematical Physics written by Des McGhee and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-08-24 with total page 191 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a concise introduction to a unified Hilbert space approach to the mathematical modelling of physical phenomena which has been developed over recent years by Picard and his co-workers. The main focus is on time-dependent partial differential equations with a particular structure in the Hilbert space setting that ensures well-posedness and causality, two essential properties of any reasonable model in mathematical physics or engineering. However, the application of the theory to other types of equations is also demonstrated. By means of illustrative examples, from the straightforward to the more complex, the authors show that many of the classical models in mathematical physics as well as more recent models of novel materials and interactions are covered, or can be restructured to be covered, by this unified Hilbert space approach. The reader should require only a basic foundation in the theory of Hilbert spaces and operators therein. For convenience, however, some of the more technical background requirements are covered in detail in two appendices The theory is kept as elementary as possible, making the material suitable for a senior undergraduate or master’s level course. In addition, researchers in a variety of fields whose work involves partial differential equations and applied operator theory will also greatly benefit from this approach to structuring their mathematical models in order that the general theory can be applied to ensure the essential properties of well-posedness and causality.

Book Synopsis Shape Optimization by : Catherine Bandle
Download or read book Shape Optimization written by Catherine Bandle and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2023-06-19 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book investigates how domain dependent quantities from geometry and physics behave when the domain is perturbed. Of particular interest are volume- and perimeter-preserving perturbations. The first and second derivatives with respect to the perturbation are exploited for domain functionals like eigenvalues, energies and geometrical quantities. They provide necessary conditions for optimal domains and are useful when global approaches like symmetrizations fail. The book is exampledriven and illustrates the usefulness of domain variations in various applications.
Book Synopsis Geometric Analysis on Real Analytic Manifolds by : Andrew D. Lewis
Download or read book Geometric Analysis on Real Analytic Manifolds written by Andrew D. Lewis and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-12-09 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph provides some useful tools for performing global geometric analysis on real analytic manifolds. At the core of the methodology of the book is a variety of descriptions for the topologies for the space of real analytic sections of a real analytic vector bundle and for the space of real analytic mappings between real analytic manifolds. Among the various descriptions for these topologies is a development of geometric seminorms for the space of real analytic sections. To illustrate the techniques in the book, a number of fundamental constructions in differential geometry are shown to induce continuous mappings on spaces of real analytic sections and mappings. Aimed at researchers at the level of Doctoral students and above, the book introduces the reader to the challenges and opportunities of real analytic analysis and geometry.
