Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the late 1970s there has been an explosion of industrial and academic interest in circulating fluidized beds. In part, the attention has arisen due to the environmental advantages associated with CFB (circulating . fluidized bed) combustion systems, the incorporation of riser reactors employing cir culating fluidized bed technology in petroleum refineries for fluid catalytic cracking and, to a lesser extent, the successes of CFB technology for calcina tion reactions and Fischer-Tropsch synthesis. In part, it was also the case that too much attention had been devoted to bubbling fluidized beds and it was time to move on to more complex and more advantageous regime,S of operation. Since 1980 a number of CFB processes have been commercialized. There have been five successful International Circulating Fluidized Bed Confer ences beginning in 1985, the most recent taking place in Beijing in May 1996. In addition, we have witnessed a host of other papers on CFB funda mentals and applications in journals and other archival publications. There have also been several review papers and books on specific CFB topics. However, there has been no comprehensive book reviewing the field and attempting to provide an overview of both fundamentals and applications. The purpose of this book is to fill this vacuum.

The model will include coal combustion phenomena and will incorporate basic mass transport relationships, bubble mechanics, heat transfer and configuration effects. A cold model test bed will be designed, constructed and operated to generate data in support of the effort in developing the mathematical model. In particular, experiments will provide data concerning heat transfer effects of tubes and tube bundles in fluidized beds, bubble formation, dispersion etc. Experiments have been carried out to measure the total heat transfer coefficient between 12.7 mm diameter copper tubes with different surface roughness and glass beads of different sizes. The comparison of results for the rough and technically smooth tubes revealed that the heat transfer coefficient strongly depends on the ratio of pitch (P) to particle diameter anti d/sub p/). By the proper choice of this ratio, P/anti d/sub p/, the total maximum heat transfer coefficient could be increased by as much as 40% over the value for a smooth tube with the same outside diameter. However, if P/anti d/sub p/ ratio is less than unity, the maximum heat transfer coefficient for rough tube is smaller as compared to the smooth tube. The design of the two end plates of the fluidized bed for mounting tube bundles of varying configuration and pitches has been completed and is currently under fabrication in the departmental workshop.

Book excerpt: This volume contains invited lectures and contributed papers presented at the NATO Advanced Research Workshop on Mathematical Modeling in Combustion and related topics, held in. Lyon (France), April 27 - 30, 1987. This conference was planned to fit in with the two-month visit of Professor G.S.S. Ludford to the Ecole Centrale de Lyon. He kindly agreed to chair the Scientific and Organizing Committee and actively helped to initiate the meeting. His death in December 1986 is an enormous loss to the scientific community in general, and in particular, to the people involved in the present enterprise. The subject of mathematical modeling in combustion is too large for a single conference, and the selection of topics re flects both areas of recent research activity and areas of in terest to Professor G.S.S. Ludford, to whose memory the Advanced Workshop and this present volume are dedicated. The meeting was divided into seven specialized sessions detonation theory, mathematical analysis, numerical treatment of combustion problems, flame theory, experimental and industrial aspects, complex chemistry, and turbulent combustion. It brought together researchers and engineers from University and Industry (see below the closing remarks of the workshop by Prof. N. Peters). The articles in this volume have been judged and accepted on their scientific quality, and language corrections may have been sacrificed in order to allow quick dissemination of knowledge to prevail.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dissertation aims to develop an overall mathematical model of circulating fluidized bed (CFB) combustors on up-to-date theories and experimental data of previous research work.Since solid exhibits a wide particle size distribution in a CFB boiler, a hydrodynamic model based on the semi-empirical approach is developed to approximate the local particle size distribution in CFB. The core/annulus flow structure is applied to this model and the particles in the bed are discretized into several size groups. The model accounts for the disintegration and shrinking of coal particles during the combustion process of each group of particles. It shows that coarser particles are gathered near the walls and the average particle diameter decreases along the boiler height, and this trend is more significant in the splash region.A three-dimensional model is developed to predict the bed-to-wall radiative heat transfer coefficient in the upper dilute zone of CFB combustors. The radiative transfer equation is solved by the discrete ordinates method. The Mie scattering theory is applied to calculate the absorption and scattering efficiency factors of particles existing in CFB combustors. The model considers the influences of the particle properties (including particle size distribution, particle optical constants and solid composition) on the radiative heat transfer coefficient. Simulation results show that the particle properties have significant influences on the bed-to-wall radiative heat transfer coefficient in CFB combustors.A coal combustion model is developed combined to the hydrodynamic model and heat transfer model.

Book excerpt: A realization of recent clean energy initiatives, fluidized bed combustion (FBC) has quickly won industry preference due to its ability to burn materials as diverse as low-grade coals, biomass, and industrial and municipal waste. Fluidized Bed Combustion catalogs the fundamental physical and chemical processes required of bubbling fluidized beds before launching into application-centered coverage of hot-gas generator, incinerator, and boiler concepts and design, calculations for regime parameters and dimensions, and all aspects of FBC operation. It enumerates the environmental consequences of fluidized bed processes and proposes measures to reduce the formation of harmful emissions.

The text contains various studies, facts, and discussions on fluidized beds. The book begins by going through the rise and fall of circulating systems, specifically fluid dynamics. The chapter continues with a wider discussion of hydrodynamics, which includes its scales, particles, and different math formulas. In the several chapters that follow, a thorough study of fluidized beds and its subtopics are presented, which include particle behavior, combustion, heat transfer process, reactors, gas mixing, parameters, measurements, and characteristics. The variations of fluidized beds, including the multisolid, dual-column, and turbulent, are also given. The book serves as a very useful reference for undergraduates and postgraduates of physics, chemistry, and other related fields.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Circulating Fluidized Bed (CFB) is a new technique for combusting a wide variety of fuels. This has attracted attention of many researchers due to many advantages such as good turn down ratio, high combustion efficiency and efficient pollution control. In the present work, a generalised mathematical model has been developed for the combustion of char taking into account the formation of carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide during combustion. The present model is a step further to the basic model given by BASU, SETT, GBORDZOE (1987) and improvements incorporated by DAS (1989) in the form of variable bed density along the combustor height. The model predicts the combustion efficiency, the concentration of oxygen, carbon dioxide, and carbon monoxide in the flue gas, the exit particle size distribution and core carbon fraction along the combustor height. Modifications were performed on the existing pilot scale CFB combustor by incorporating and expansion joint to reduce thermal stress developed by unequal expansion between the main combustor and the return leg. The mathematical model has been validated by performing experiments on a CFB combustor using char as a fuel. Model predictions have been done by using the same conditions as the experimental conditions. The model predictions are in agreement with the experimental results. Experiments were conducted on fluidized bed combustion to study the combustion efficiency and the sulphur retention capability of quick lime and marblestone used as sorbent with Thai lignite. Results show that marblestone has a lower capability to retain sulphur than quick lime. The results of sulphur retention with quick lime are encouraging. About 91% of sulphur is retained from lignite in the bed. Combustion efficiency with high sulphur lignite on the FBC is more than 90%.
