Book excerpt: This textbook is perfect for a math course for non-math majors, with the goal of encouraging effective analytical thinking and exposing students to elegant mathematical ideas. It includes many topics commonly found in sampler courses, like Platonic solids, Euler’s formula, irrational numbers, countable sets, permutations, and a proof of the Pythagorean Theorem. All of these topics serve a single compelling goal: understanding the mathematical patterns underlying the symmetry that we observe in the physical world around us. The exposition is engaging, precise and rigorous. The theorems are visually motivated with intuitive proofs appropriate for the intended audience. Students from all majors will enjoy the many beautiful topics herein, and will come to better appreciate the powerful cumulative nature of mathematics as these topics are woven together into a single fascinating story about the ways in which objects can be symmetric.

Topics in this book: Introduction to exponents Multiplying expressions with exponents Dividing expressions with exponents Raising an exponent to an exponent Exponents review The exponent of 0 Negative exponents Evaluating expressions Cumulative Review Answer Key Book description: In this book, students learn that exponents are used to express repeated multiplication. They learn how to multiply expressions with exponents and they discover the Product Rule for exponents. They also learn how to divide expressions with exponents and they discover the Quotient Rule for exponents. They analyze patterns to discover the affect of an exponent of zero and then they learn how to evaluate expressions with negative exponents. At the end of the book, they begin to work with polynomials in preparation for learning more about them in Algebra 1: Book 4. Student testimonials: "This is the best way to learn math." Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Explorations in College Algebra, 3/e and its accompanying ancillaries are designed to make algebra interesting and relevant to the student. The text adopts a problem-solving approach that motivates students to grasp abstract ideas by solving real-world problems. The problems lie on a continuum from basic algebraic drills to open-ended, non-routine questions. The focus is shifted from learning a set of discrete mathematical rules to exploring how algebra is used in the social, physical, and life sciences. The goal of Explorations in College Algebra, 3/e is to prepare students for future advanced mathematics or other quantitatively based courses, while encouraging them to appreciate and use the power of algebra in answering questions about the world around us. Explorations in College Algebra was developed by the College Algebra Consortium based at the University of Massachusetts, Boston and funded by a grant from the National Science Foundation. The materials were developed in the spirit of the reform movement and reflect the guidelines issued by the various professional mathematics societies (including AMATYC, MAA, and NCTM).

Book excerpt: This third volume of four finishes the program begun in Volume 1 by describing all the most important techniques, mainly based on Gröbner bases, which allow one to manipulate the roots of the equation rather than just compute them. The book begins with the 'standard' solutions (Gianni–Kalkbrener Theorem, Stetter Algorithm, Cardinal–Mourrain result) and then moves on to more innovative methods (Lazard triangular sets, Rouillier's Rational Univariate Representation, the TERA Kronecker package). The author also looks at classical results, such as Macaulay's Matrix, and provides a historical survey of elimination, from Bézout to Cayley. This comprehensive treatment in four volumes is a significant contribution to algorithmic commutative algebra that will be essential reading for algebraists and algebraic geometers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The subject of algebra has always been important in American secondary mathematics education. However, algebra at the elementary level has been garnering increasing attention and importance over the past 15 years. There is consequently a dire need for ideas, suggestions and models for how best to achieve pre-algebraic instruction in the elementary grades. Planting the Seeds of Algebra will empower teachers with theoretical and practical knowledge about both the content and pedagogy of such instruction, and show them the different faces of algebra as it appears in the early grades. The book will walk teachers of young children through many examples of K-6 math lessons and unpack, step by step, the hidden connections to higher algebra. After reading this book, teachers will be better equipped ...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A precise, fundamental study of commutative algebra, this largely self-contained treatment is the first in a two-volume set. Intended for advanced undergraduates and graduate students in mathematics, its prerequisites are the rudiments of set theory and linear algebra, including matrices and determinants. The opening chapter develops introductory notions concerning groups, rings, fields, polynomial rings, and vector spaces. Subsequent chapters feature an exposition of field theory and classical material concerning ideals and modules in arbitrary commutative rings, including detailed studies of direct sum decompositions. The final two chapters explore Noetherian rings and Dedekind domains. This work prepares readers for the more advanced topics of Volume II, which include valuation theory, polynomial and power series rings, and local algebra.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Grassmann Algebra Volume 1: Foundations Exploring extended vector algebra with Mathematica Grassmann algebra extends vector algebra by introducing the exterior product to algebraicize the notion of linear dependence. With it, vectors may be extended to higher-grade entities: bivectors, trivectors, … multivectors. The extensive exterior product also has a regressive dual: the regressive product. The pair behaves a little like the Boolean duals of union and intersection. By interpreting one of the elements of the vector space as an origin point, points can be defined, and the exterior product can extend points into higher-grade located entities from which lines, planes and multiplanes can be defined. Theorems of Projective Geometry are simply formulae involving these entities and the dual products. By introducing the (orthogonal) complement operation, the scalar product of vectors may be extended to the interior product of multivectors, which in this more general case may no longer result in a scalar. The notion of the magnitude of vectors is extended to the magnitude of multivectors: for example, the magnitude of the exterior product of two vectors (a bivector) is the area of the parallelogram formed by them. To develop these foundational concepts, we need only consider entities which are the sums of elements of the same grade. This is the focus of this volume. But the entities of Grassmann algebra need not be of the same grade, and the possible product types need not be constricted to just the exterior, regressive and interior products. For example quaternion algebra is simply the Grassmann algebra of scalars and bivectors under a new product operation. Clifford, geometric and higher order hypercomplex algebras, for example the octonions, may be defined similarly. If to these we introduce Clifford's invention of a scalar which squares to zero, we can define entities (for example dual quaternions) with which we can perform elaborate transformations. Exploration of these entities, operations and algebras will be the focus of the volume to follow this. There is something fascinating about the beauty with which the mathematical structures that Hermann Grassmann discovered describe the physical world, and something also fascinating about how these beautiful structures have been largely lost to the mainstreams of mathematics and science. He wrote his seminal Ausdehnungslehre (Die Ausdehnungslehre. Vollständig und in strenger Form) in 1862. But it was not until the latter part of his life that he received any significant recognition for it, most notably by Gibbs and Clifford. In recent times David Hestenes' Geometric Algebra must be given the credit for much of the emerging awareness of Grassmann's innovation. In the hope that the book be accessible to scientists and engineers, students and professionals alike, the text attempts to avoid any terminology which does not make an essential contribution to an understanding of the basic concepts. Some familiarity with basic linear algebra may however be useful. The book is written using Mathematica, a powerful system for doing mathematics on a computer. This enables the theory to be cross-checked with computational explorations. However, a knowledge of Mathematica is not essential for an appreciation of Grassmann's beautiful ideas.
