The primary purpose of the symposium was to bring specialists of contact mechanics together in order to draw a representative picture of the state of the art and to identify new trends and new features in the field. In view of the contributions made. one may assert that the mechanics of contact and friction has now reached a stage where the foundations are clear both from the mathematical and from the computational standpoints. Some of the difficulties met may be identified by saying that frictional contact is governed by resistance laws that are non smooth and whose flow rule is not associated with the yield criterion through the traditional normality property.

Book excerpt: This book contributes to a more balanced view of the most dramatic results of language contact by presenting linguistic and historical sketches of lesser-known contact languages. The twelve case studies offer eloquent testimony against the still common view that all contact languages are pidgins and creoles with maximally simple and essentially identical grammars. They show that some contact languages are neither pidgins nor creoles, and that even pidgins and creoles can display considerable structural diversity and structural complexity; they also show that two-language contact situations can give rise to pidgins, especially when access to a target language is withheld by its speakers. The chapters are arranged according to language type: three focus on pidgins (Hiri Motu, by Tom Dutton; Pidgin Delaware, by Ives Goddard; and Ndyuka-Trio Pidgin, by George L. Huttar and Frank J. Velantie), two on creoles (Kituba, by Salikoko S. Mufwene, and Sango, by Helma Pasch), one on a set of pidgins and creoles (Arabic-based contact languages, by Jonathan Owens), one on the question of early pidginization and/or creolization in Swahili (by Derek Nurse), and five on bilingual mixed languages (Michif, by Peter Bakker and Robert A. Book excerpt: This volume contains 44 papers presented at the Third Contact Mechanics International Symposium (CMIS 2001) held in Praia da Consola9ao, Peniche (portugal), June 17-21,2001. This Symposium was the direct continuation of the first two CMIS held in Lausanne (1992) and in Carry-Le-Rouet (1994). Other related meetings, in what concerns scientific topics and participants, took place in the nineties at La Grande Motte (1990), Vadstena (1996), Ferrara (1997), Munich (1998) and Grenoble (1999). The Symposium aimed at gathering researchers with interests in a wide range of topics in theoretical, computational and experimental contact mechanics. The call for papers mentioned topics in tribology, mathematical formulations and analysis, numerical methods in non-smooth mechanics, impact problems, instabilities and technological problems. The total number of participants was 102, from Universities and Research Institutes of 19 countries. The Scientific Committee reviewed 102 submitted abstracts, and the final program consisted of 6 main lectures, 43 oral communications and 36 poster presentations (see Appendix A). The papers in this book correspond to almost all the main lectures and oral communications, and they are assembled in 5 chapters: • Dynamics and Impact • Instabilities, Oscillations and Waves • Contact Models, Results and Applications • Mathematical Analysis • Numerical Methods. Faisant suite à un précédent volume sur le comportement mécanique des matériaux, consacré à l'élasticité et à l'élastoplasticité, il conserve la même démarche qui consiste, en partant des mécanismes actifs à l'échelle microscopique, à remonter aux lois macroscopiques. Le premier chapitre concerne les comportements viscoplastiques qui se manifestent, par exemple, à basse température, par une influence de la vitesse de sollicitation, ou, à haute température, par le fluage sous charge constante. Le deuxième chapitre traite des très nombreux phénomènes d'endommagement que l'on rencontre dans tous les matériaux (métalliques, polymères, verres, bétons ...), comme la cavitation, la fatigue, la corrosion sous contrainte. Le troisième chapitre donne les notions de mécanique de la rupture nécessaires pour comprendre la résistance de la fissuration. Le quatrième chapitre apporte les notions principales de mécanique du contact. Chaque chapitre est suivi d'exercices, énoncés de telle sorte que le lecteur est guidé pas à pas pour trouver la solution. De très nombreuses illustrations facilitent la lecture. Comportement mécanique des matériaux est le fruit du DEA "Mécanique et Matériaux" de la région parisienne. Il s'adresse aussi aux élèves-ingénieurs, ingénieurs et chercheurs. Les développements mathématiques y sont d'un accès facile. Les réelles difficultés, dont la maîtrise n'est pas exempte d'aspects passionnants, résident dans les fréquents changements d'échelle et dans le sens physique auquel il est fait appel.
