Book Synopsis Multi-criteria Decision Analysis for Supporting the Selection of Engineering Materials in Product Design by : Ali Jahan
Download or read book Multi-criteria Decision Analysis for Supporting the Selection of Engineering Materials in Product Design written by Ali Jahan and published by Butterworth-Heinemann. This book was released on 2016-02-17 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Multi-criteria Decision Analysis for Supporting the Selection of Engineering Materials in Product Design, Second Edition, provides readers with tactics they can use to optimally select materials to satisfy complex design problems when they are faced with the vast range of materials available. Current approaches to materials selection range from the use of intuition and experience, to more formalized computer-based methods, such as electronic databases with search engines to facilitate the materials selection process. Recently, multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) methods have been applied to materials selection, demonstrating significant capability for tackling complex design problems. This book describes the rapidly growing field of MCDM and its application to materials selection. It aids readers in producing successful designs by improving the decision-making process. This new edition updates and expands previous key topics, including new chapters on materials selection in the context of design problem-solving and multiple objective decision-making, also presenting a significant amount of additional case studies that will aid in the learning process. Describes the advantages of Quality Function Deployment (QFD) in the materials selection process through different case studies Presents a methodology for multi-objective material design optimization that employs Design of Experiments coupled with Finite Element Analysis Supplements existing quantitative methods of materials selection by allowing simultaneous consideration of design attributes, component configurations, and types of material Provides a case study for simultaneous materials selection and geometrical optimization processes
Book Synopsis Materials and Design by : Michael F. Ashby
Download or read book Materials and Design written by Michael F. Ashby and published by Butterworth-Heinemann. This book was released on 2010 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Materials are the stuff of design. From the very beginning of human history, materials have been taken from the natural world and shaped, modified, and adapted for everything from primitive tools to modern electronics. This renowned book by noted materials engineering author Mike Ashby and Industrial designer, Kara Johnson, explores the role of materials and materials processing in product design, with a particular emphasis on creating both desired aesthetics and functionality. The new edition will feature even more of the highly useful "materials profiles," that give critical design, processing, performance and applications criteria for each material in question. The reader will find information ranging from the generic and commercial names of each material, its physical and mechanical properties, its chemical properties, its common uses, how it is typically made and processed, and even its average price. And with improved photographs and drawings, the reader will be taken even more closely to the way real design is done by real designers, selecting the optimum materials for a successful product. * The best guide ever published on the on the role of materials, past and present, in product development, by noted materials authority Mike Ashby and professional designer Kara Johnson--now with even better photos and drawings on the Design Process * Significant new section on the use of re-cycled materials in products, and the importance of sustainable design for manufactured goods and services * Enhanced materials profiles, with addition of new materials types like nanomaterials, advanced plastics and bio-based materials

Book Synopsis Materials Enabled Designs by : Michael Pfeifer
Download or read book Materials Enabled Designs written by Michael Pfeifer and published by Butterworth-Heinemann. This book was released on 2009-06-02 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are books aplenty on materials selection criteria for engineering design. Most cover the physical and mechanical properties of specific materials, but few offer much in the way of total product design criteria. This innovative new text/reference will give the “Big picture view of how materials should be selected—not only for a desired function but also for their ultimate performance, durability, maintenance, replacement costs, and so on. Even such factors as how a material behaves when packaged, shipped, and stored will be taken into consideration. For without that knowledge, a design engineer is often in the dark as to how a particular material used in particular product or process is going to behave over time, how costly it will be, and, ultimately, how successful it will be at doing what is supposed to do. This book delivers that knowledge. * Brief but comprehensive review of major materials functional groups (mechanical, electrical, thermal, chemical) by major material categories (metals, polymers, ceramics, composites)* Invaluable guidance on selection criteria at early design stage, including such factors as functionality, durability, and availability* Insight into lifecycle factors that affect choice of materials beyond simple performance specs, including manufacturability, machinability, shelf life, packaging, and even shipping characteristics* Unique help on writing materials selection specifications
Book Synopsis Computer-Aided Materials Selection During Structural Design by : National Research Council
Download or read book Computer-Aided Materials Selection During Structural Design written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1995-04-03 with total page 83 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The selection of the proper materials for a structural component is a critical activity that is governed by many, often conflicting factors. Incorporating materials expert systems into CAD/CAM operations could assist designers by suggesting potential manufacturing processes for particular products to facilitate concurrent engineering, recommending various materials for a specific part based on a given set of characteristics, or proposing possible modifications of a design if suitable materials for a particular part do not exist. This book reviews the structural design process, determines the elements, and capabilities required for a materials selection expert system to assist design engineers, and recommends the areas of expert system and materials modeling research and development required to devise a materials-specific design system.

Book Synopsis Materials Experience by : Kevin Edwards
Download or read book Materials Experience written by Kevin Edwards and published by Elsevier Inc. Chapters. This book was released on 2013-10-24 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Product design is seen as the amalgamation of technical and industrial design in order to create successful products. All too often however, technical and industrial design is conducted separately, or the influence of industrial design ignored. All physical products are made from materials and selecting the most appropriate is a key aspect of the design process. However, trying to satisfy a set of contradictory design requirements from a range of materials with different properties and characteristics is not easy. There are numerous databases of material properties and analytical methods for selecting materials but these are mainly aimed at technical design. The support available for selecting materials' characteristics associated with industrial design is much less developed. The interaction of materials' properties are considered from the different perspectives of achieving technical performance and satisfying human-centered needs, focusing on strategies for selecting materials that take into consideration both aspects together in product design.

Book Synopsis Materials Selection in Mechanical Design by : M. F. Ashby
Download or read book Materials Selection in Mechanical Design written by M. F. Ashby and published by Pergamon. This book was released on 1992-01-01 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New materials enable advances in engineering design. This book describes a procedure for material selection in mechanical design, allowing the most suitable materials for a given application to be identified from the full range of materials and section shapes available. A novel approach is adopted not found elsewhere. Materials are introduced through their properties; materials selection charts (a new development) capture the important features of all materials, allowing rapid retrieval of information and application of selection techniques. Merit indices, combined with charts, allow optimisation of the materials selection process. Sources of material property data are reviewed and approaches to their use are given. Material processing and its influence on the design are discussed. The book closes with chapters on aesthetics and industrial design. Case studies are developed as a method of illustrating the procedure and as a way of developing the ideas further.
