Las fibras lignocelulósicas pueden ser aprovechadas, dadas sus características, como refuerzo para materiales plásticos compuestos. En este campo, el polipropileno y el polietileno constituyen uno de los materiales de más amplio consumo, tanto reforzado como sin reforzar. El polipropileno y polietileno pueden utilizarse bien por motivos económicos, además de buenas propiedades de rigidez y flexión, o bien reforzado y anclado químicamente con el refuerzo. Ello permite obtener unas propiedades a tracción y flexión realmente competitivas, tan competitivas que pueden sustituir en algunas aplicaciones a los materiales reforzados con fibra de vidrio. En este estudio, se han utilizado fibras de cartón ondulado "flutting" para la producción de materiales compuestos de polipropileno y polietileno. El presente trabajo se centra en las propiedades macroscópicas: resistencia a tracción, flexión e impacto, módulo de Young y naturaleza de la interfase.

Este material es utilizado en la fabricación de tubos mediante enrollamiento helicoidal. El objetivo fue desarrollar un modelo viscoelástico simple capaz de ser implementado en la industria para así mejorar el proceso de conformado del tubo y predecir su respuesta a cargas en el corto plazo. En la fase experimental se realizaron ensayos de tracción uniaxial carga-descarga a probetas longitudinales y transversales a tres velocidades de desplazamiento de travesaño distintas (10, 1 y 0.1 mm/min). También se obtuvieron imágenes SEM para confirmar que la orientación de las fibras en el polietileno preferentemente es en la dirección del flujo en el proceso de conformado.

Book excerpt: Resumen:En este trabajo se estudió la resistencia a la compresión de un material compuesto elaborado con una matriz de residuo papelero y reforzado con fibras de guadua Angustifolia Kunth. Inicialmente se realizaron varias pruebas para determinar algunas propiedades de los materiales a utilizar, como es el caso de la humedad del residuo celulósico, ya que éste en el momento de ser desechado por la empresa papelera, contenía una cantidad desconocida de humedad, la cual debió ser calculada para poder determinar el proceso al cual tenía que ser sometido antes de la fabricación de las probetas de ensayo. Además se efectuó una investigación sobre los diferentes métodos de secado en la región, para luego escoger los más rentables en cuanto a disposición y economía. La extracción de la fibra se ejecutó de forma manual, proceso que no disminuyó las propiedades mecánicas de la fibra. También se realizó un estudio sobre la cantidad de fibra que se debía adicionar a cada probeta sin disminuir las características del material y sin saturar la probeta. Finalmente se encontró que la humedad del residuo, método de secado, cantidad de fibra y longitud de fibra que mejores resultados presentaron en el ensayo de compresión fueron: 50,73 % en peso, secado al aire libre, 9 g de fibra (4,08 % en peso) y 3 cm respectivamente, generando un esfuerzo de 90,75 kg/cm2. Adicionalmente, se realizaron ensayos de compresión midiendo fuerza y deformación para realizar la curva de ingeniería del material compuesto elaborado con las mejores propiedades antes mencionadas con 7, 14 y 28 días de secado al aire libre, obteniendo los resultados que se muestran en la Gráfica 1...
