Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Horse in Blackfoot Indian Culture: With Comparative Material From Other Western Tribes Most of the text figures reproduced in this study are based on pencil drawings carefully prepared by Calvin Boy, a young Piegan artist. To insure their accuracy, special precautions were taken. As elderly informants described objects and/or activities I desired to have illustrated Reuben Black Boy and I made rough sketches. We showed these to Calvin Boy and explained to him the content of the desired illustrations. He then drew pictures at a very large scale so that they could be seen readily by elderly informants, many of whom had poor eyesight. The informants examined the drawings and in the presence of the artist made suggestions for any changes in detail that might be necessary. Then Calvin Boy prepared the final pencil or pen-and-ink drawings. The minority of the line illustrations were prepared by the author from his field notes and sketches. I am indebted to the following institutions for permission to repro duce photographs of objects and scenes in this bulletin: American Museum of Natural History, New York; Brooklyn Museum; Chicago Museum of Natural History; Glacier Studio, Browning, Mont. Great Northern Railway; Montana Historical Society, Helena; Museum of the Plains Indian; Royal Ontario Museum of Archaeology; Smith aonian Institution: and Geological Survey, United States Department of the Interior. Throughout the period of this investigation (1941 - 52) I was mind ful of its broader implications. I endeavored to read widely in the scattered and largely unindexed literature on the Blackfoot and other horse-using tribes of the Great Plains and Plateau. In quest of dated materials and comparative data, I examined numerous collections of specimens in museums as well as collections of early drawings, paint ings, and photographs. I sought to obtain comparative data directly from elderly informants among the Flathead Oglala Dakota and Kiowa (1949) tribes as my limited opportunities for field work on their respective reservations permitted. Alice Marriott graciously supplied, through correspondence, information on Kiowa horse usages, obtained in the course of her own field work. Eugene Barrett, forester, Rosebud Reservation, S. Dak., kindly furnished some comparative data on Brule Dakota horse usages. Edith V. A. Murphy of Covelo, Calif, formerly field botanist, Office of Indian Affairs, sent me valuable comparative data on horse medicines. Author George Bird Grinnell, having spent time with the principal men of the Blackfeet Nation of Native Americans, seeks to give a record of their stories in their original and pure format stating that, "These are Indians' stories, pictures of Indian life drawn by Indian artists, and showing this life from the Indian's point of view. Those who read these stories will have the narratives just as they came to me from the lips of the Indians themselves; and from the tales they can get a true notion of the real man who is speaking. He is not the Indian of the newspapers, nor of the novel, nor of the Eastern sentimentalist, nor of the Western boomer, but the real Indian as he is in his daily life among his own people, his friends, where he is not embarrassed by the presence of strangers, nor trying to produce effects, but is himself—the true, natural man."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Clark Wissler's 'The Social Life of the Blackfoot Indians' presents a detailed ethnographic study of the Blackfoot Indians, with a focus on their social organization and band system. Through extensive research and collaboration with local experts, Wissler delves into the complex relationships between different bands and the function of the band circle in political and ceremonial contexts. By examining the names and characteristics of Blackfoot bands, as well as comparing them to neighboring tribes, Wissler sheds light on the origins and development of this unique tribal government system. This fascinating work challenges conventional notions of social organization and exogamy, providing valuable insights into the lives and customs of the Blackfoot people.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Anthropological Papers of the American Museum of Natural History, Vol. 7: Part I, the Social Life of the Blackfoot Indians The names of Blackfoot bands are not animal terms but characterizations in no wise different from tribal names. Those of the Assiniboine, Gros Ventre, Arapaho, Cheyenne, and teton-dakota are, so far as reported, essentially of the same class. It seems then that the name system for these bands is the same among these neighboring tribes of the area and that it is an integral part of the whole system of nomenclature for groups of individ uals. This may be of no particular significance, yet it is difficult to see in it the ear marks of a broken-down clan organization; it looks for all the world like an economic or physical grouping of a growing population.
