Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In An American Princess, Laurie Dennett relates the remarkable story of a New England woman whose wealth, intelligence, and charm took her to the heart of aristocratic and intellectual Europe. Marguerite Chapin (1880–1963) was the product of two cultures: her father’s enterprising American one and her mother’s French heritage, which enabled her to move to Paris when she inherited a fortune at age twenty-one. There, she studied singing with the greatest tenor of the age, commissioned paintings from artists such as Pierre Bonnard, Edouard Vuillard, and André Derain, and drew upon her many friendships with writers to found and edit the pioneering literary review Commerce. Her marriage, in 1911, to the composer Prince Roffredo Caetani, a member of one of Italy’s oldest dynasties, added a whole new dimension to her life. Not only did it bring her a title, but happiness, two children, and a set of extraordinarily talented in-laws. When Marguerite and Roffredo moved to Italy in 1932, she found refuge from fascism and an outlet for creativity at Ninfa, the estate where the Caetani had created a garden among the ruins of a medieval town. At age sixty-eight, having survived the death of her son, the war, and the German occupation, Marguerite launched the international review Botteghe Oscure. Its aim was to reclaim respectability for Italian writing, but through her discerning and generous editorial vision, it became a showcase for writers everywhere. An engrossing biography based on extensive original research, An American Princess celebrates Marguerite Chapin Caetani’s impressive accomplishments and legacy.

The aliens run everything from underground tunnels in which they do the unspeakable to humans. Techno's sister was abducted, and Mateo and his family were taken underground. Mateo defended his sister’s honor only to find himself a prisoner on a dark train, shackled, and with no food or water.. His situation worsens when he finds out that he must fight for food while caged.. Mateo is ordered to take his clothes off and board another train. Nobody has ever come back. This one takes him to a chute, a grinder, and screams. A horrid realization comes when he sees who is running the operation. Mateo not only fights back, he become a national hero for challenging the Draconians. Mateo’s sister is locked into a special cell to please the leader of the Reptilians. Techno and Mateo decide to take matters into their own hands. Techno gets a special position in the Space Force investigating abductions. Underage abductees were forced into prostitution to blackmail powerful men. One case may be his sister, abducted twenty-five years ago. Could it be her? The alien underground has made so much progress during the last one hundred years in terms of control and planetary devastation that an intervention is called for by another alien species called the Orbellians. The Orbellians have had a hand in life on Earth for millennia and they begin to hybridize with humans. The result is an epic battle for control of Earth between three ancient alien species and humans.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This vivid study, richly illustrated with forty color photographs, offers a multilayered analysis of retablos—folk images painted on tin that are offered as votives of thanks for a miracle granted or a favor bestowed—created by Mexican migrants to the United States. Durand and Massey analyze 124 contemporary retablo texts, scrutinizing the shifting subjects and themes that constitute a running record of the migrant's unique experience. The result is a vivid work of synthesis that connects the history of an art form and a people, links two very different cultures, and allows a deeper understanding of a major twentieth-century theme—the drama of transnational migration.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Misericordia International was founded by Elaine C. Block as an association dedicated to the study of choir stalls and their relation to other artistic manifestations during the Middle Ages, and the dissemination of research. From its beginnings, Misericordia International has promoted a bi-annual international conference as a place of scientific exchange among members of the research community interested in this topic from a multidisciplinary perspective. The most recent conference was held from 23 to 26 June 2016 at the Ernst-Moritz-Arndt-University in Greifswald, Germany. The theme of the conference was the workshop context of medieval choir stalls in its broadest sense. Where the iconography of choir stalls has enjoyed a lot of attention from researchers, the process and circumstances of the making of these complex objects have often been rather neglected. Choir stalls were not produced by an individual artist, but were created by a group of craftsmen. This factor raises all kinds of questions. The conference in Greifswald covered an obvious need for research and therefore included much hitherto unknown research material and additional first results based on initial research. In addition to questions about substantive and economic mechanisms of the production of choir stalls, the conference dealt with basic knowledge of craftsmanship. This publication presents the papers held at the conference and is divided into five thematic parts, namely Workshop practices; Early modern choir stalls – Traditions or restart?; Stalls of stone – A forgotten furniture; Travelling craftsmen; and Group of works.

Book excerpt: In the multi-ethnic immigration paradise of Minnesota’s Iron Range, a woman’s suspicion that her husband might be cheating on her leads to the unexpected response from the private investigator she hired. He is, instead, spending the time investigating his adoption at the request of their adult daughters, who had submitted a DNA test and through it connected him with a nearby relative. Bringing in a professional genealogist to expedite solving the puzzle of how on earth they might be related to each other leads the family through photo albums, newspapers on microfilm, the mystery of an abandoned toddler a generation earlier, census records, the frequent illegibility of cursive handwriting in historical records, rum-running on the Great Lakes during Prohibition, the propensity of upper midwestern girls to go to beaches in California for winter break, cross-border migration between the US and Canada, the wonders of multi-lingual phonetic spelling, and other adventures through the past to some unanticipated results in the present.
