Book excerpt: Excerpt from Masters of French Literature For the general reader, I fancy such a his tory of French literature would be far more illuminating than some of the detailed hand books which bewilder the mind with thousands of names and titles, and brief, insufficient ah stracts of books great and small. There would be the difference that exists between a series of views from twenty mountain tops, each one within sight of its immediate neighbors, and the record made by a pedometer. Or, to vary this rather prolonged figure of speech which has helped us thus far, such a history would possess the advantage that a person gains from residence in a few foreign towns, as compared with spending an equal amount of time in rapid travel, from one meaningless hotel to another. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Masters of Modern French Criticism To study sainte-beuve and the other leading French critics of the nineteenth century is therefore to get very close to the intellectual centre of the century. We may thus follow the main movement of thought through this period and at the same time build up the necessary background for the proper understanding of the ideas of our own day, Whether they continue this earlier thought or react from it. The transition from one group to another 1s sometimes by connexion of thought, sometimes by way of contrast. The pictures with four exceptions have been chosen from the works of French masters. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Masters of French Music The reader who turns to these pages with the idea of finding therein a large and exhaustive account of the composers mentioned, with a technical analysis of their works, will, I fear, be disappointed. My intention has been a far more modest one. The dimensions of this volume would not have allowed me to devote that amount of space to each composer that might be considered due to his merits. The object I have had in view has been to give an account of their lives and to draw attention to the tendencies exhibited in their works. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern French Masters The source of art is the fountain of Love: the Winged spirits, Painting, Sculpture, and Poetry, spring from it hand in hand. With affectionate leave-takings and cries of joy at their liberation, they soar into space, the angel of Music out-winging the rest because of more lambent fibre, but she is no more vital nor pulsating than her sisters. Genius is Love, Talent is the sure perception of essentials combined with the power of expression. Talent, coupled with genius, produces the Love-Child that men call a Masterpiece. The love-child in Art is the most perfect of all human creations, whether the artist lover be conventional or academic, or rebellious against form and schools, or capricious and eccentric. Emerson said: "Write above your door the word, 'Whim.'" About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern French Masters: A Series of Biographical and Critical Reviews HE painters' contention that no one but a painter is a com petent judge of a picture is not a new one. It was the Greek painter Apelles who advised the cobbler to stick to his last. Keep to the shop, friend, and do not attempt to criti cize what you do not understand. The rebuke was possibly deserved, but it might be used by almost any one in defense of his particular craft or trade. Had Apelles complained to the cobbler that his shoes did not fit him and were not well made, the cobbler could have retorted in kind: Keep to your palette, friend; you know nothing about shoes. In the same way it might be said that one who eats a dinner is not to criticize it because he is not a cook, and that the only competent judges of the poem and the novel are the poet and the novelist. The reductio ad absurdum of the principle might lead us to think that only brother craftsmen are to say that there are too few latchets to the goloshes, or that the sauce or the poem is too sweet. Yet the contention is not so absurd as might at first appear. The painter asserts a half-truth, if not more. He has mastered his craft, and he certainly knows more about it than one who has not mastered it. He knows the limits of materials and methods, he knows what can be done, and he knows after it is done whether it has been well done. In comparison with him the outsider is a mere tyro. The painter is undoubtedly the better critic of the technical features of painting. Few artists of rank at the present day will claim more than this. They are willing to concede that the final result of a work of art. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Degeneration in the Great French Masters: Rousseau Chateaubriand Balzac Stendhal Sand Musset Baudelaire Flaubert Verlaine Zola And the first objection that will be raised is that one invests literature with an exaggerated importance when one casts the responsibility for this situation upon the men who make books. To that I reply, simply, that from the dawn of historical time until our own day books have been the sole means of preserving and transmitting the moral treasures of the race. All that we know about past ages has been learned from the men who wrote in them. All education is but a commentary upon written works. Civilisation and literature are indispensable to each other. Without letters, indeed, our life would tend to be a ceaseless repetition of the same experiences and the same blunders; we could not compare our age with its predecessors. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Early Teutonic, Italian, and French Masters: Translated and Edited From the Dohme Series The chapter devoted to the German Minster Builders, not usually included in the category of the masters, may perhaps be acceptable on other grounds. Apart from the variety it imparts to the work, the subject seemed so extremely interesting, has here been dealt with so ably, and is otherwise so little known and so rarely treated in works of Art, ' that its exclusion might have seemed to many a greater oversight than its insertion may possibly to some appear surprising. At all events, by a slight sacrifice of cold consistency, a desirable feature has thus been added to the volume. Book excerpt: Excerpt from French Exiles of Louisiana Tyranny doth justice spurn, Transforms a vase into an urn; Thanks, that from the blood of hero slain, Liberty springs to life again. The People vs. The King. The Duke of Wellington cost England, in the shape of pay, pensions, etc., the sum of fourteen millions of dollars. The parliamentary returns of March 23, 1S47, give the annual direct cost of royalty in England, the enormous sum of three millions eight hundred and forty-five thousand eight hundred and twenty-five dollars. The whole landed estate of England is in the hands of thirty thousand proprietors; Scotland, three thousand; Ireland, about six thousand. The lands belong to the aristocratic class, and are nearly exempt from taxation. In the report of 1847, the whole amount of land tax in Great Britain, was the sum of five millions nine hundred and fifteen thousand dollars, while the merchants, farmers, and the industrial classes, of every description, paid the sum of two hundred and forty-seven millions one hundred and sixty thousand dollars. In the above sum of money that is required to support royalty, there is an item of over one million of dollars for the private purse of the Queen. A verse from the national song of England: God save the king! Send him victorious, Soon to reign over us; God save the king! There are two chapters in the history of England that present two pictures. The one is full of joy, the other sorrow.
