Book Synopsis Possible Worlds, Artificial Intelligence, and Narrative Theory by : Marie-Laure Ryan
Download or read book Possible Worlds, Artificial Intelligence, and Narrative Theory written by Marie-Laure Ryan and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 1991 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this important contribution to narrative theory, Marie-Laure Ryan applies insights from artificial intelligence and the theory of possible worlds to the study of narrative and fiction. For Ryan, the theory of possible worlds provides a more nuanced way of discussing the commonplace notion of a fictional "world," while artificial intelligence contributes to narratology and the theory of fiction directly via its researches into the congnitive processes of texts and automatic story generation. Although Ryan applies exotic theories to the study of narrative and to fiction, her book maintains a solid basis in literary theory and makes the formal models developed by AI researchers accessible to the student of literature. By combining the philosophical background of possible world theory with models inspired by AI, the book fulfills a pressing need in narratology for new paradigms and an interdisciplinary perspective.

Book Synopsis Kinetics of Metallurgical Processes by : Hem Shanker Ray
Download or read book Kinetics of Metallurgical Processes written by Hem Shanker Ray and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-08-20 with total page 455 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is intended as a text for upper undergraduate and graduate courses on kinetics of metallurgical processes for students of materials science, metallurgical engineering, and chemical engineering. Focusing on basic and essential topics, selected from the authors’ teaching and research, it serves as a comprehensive guide to metallurgical kinetics. Chapters 1–10 discuss the “logic” of various kinetics processes, while Chapter 11 explores the systematic analysis of raw rate data generated from controlled experiments. The final chapters illustrate how the fundamental concept of thermal activation is used to describe the kinetics of rate-dependent plastic deformation and creep fracture. With numerous examples, illustrations, and step-by-step tutorials, it is ideally suited for both self-study and classroom use. The examples were selected from research papers to highlight how the topics discussed can be, and are, used to solve real-world technological problems. Providing a comprehensive list of resources for further study, and end-of-chapter review questions to help students test their knowledge, it can be used for university coursework or as a text for professional development courses.
Download or read book E. L. Doctorow written by Carol C. Harter and published by Boston : Twayne Publishers. This book was released on 1990 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this study of Doctorow's major works, Harter and Thompson examine the author's critical and popular success. They focus on the variety and versatility of his writing, the historical and cultural considerations that inform all of his fiction, and explicate the multiple connections between history, autobiography, and fiction in Doctorow's writings. The authors argue that at the center of Doctorow's art is his primary concern with his characters' consciences, rather than their ideology. They also cover the allegorical patterns and disarming realism that are important features of Doctorow's works. ISBN 0-8057-7604-4: $21.95.

Download or read book The Brazen Altar written by Eunice Hung and published by . This book was released on 2021-05 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Welcome to the City. In this place of peace and plenty, with no disease, no suffering, and no want, people find meaning in service to their gods. They know the gods were created by humans, of course. But the gods protect and provide for the people, so why wouldn't the people serve the gods? In a Utopian society, what better way to express service than through pleasure and faith? For Kheema and her seven fellow Potentials, that means entering the temple of the Sun God to undergo months of training and practice to determine which of them will be chosen as Sacrifice. On the day of the summer Solstice, the one chosen as Sacrifice must recite the entire litany from atop the temple, while enduring nonstop forced orgasms from dawn 'til dusk. For Terlyn, service means becoming part of the Garden, bound naked and asleep while worshippers help themselves to her body. Terlyn wakes in ecstasy over and over, only to fall asleep again. The experience changes her, and her relationship with her friend and lover Donvin, who visits her while she is part of the Garden. Ashi's service to the god known as the Wild entails competing with other worshippers in a forest that appears overnight to demonstrate her resilience and will, so that she might become part of a ritual involving an altar, a long row of cages, and the complete abandonment of the self. The three stories brush against each other, revealing the heart of the City, as the people of the City serve, or ask for enlightenment from, multiple gods at once.
