Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection presents an international perspective on issues of training and accreditation at the Master’s level of course provision in the initial and continuing professional development of teachers, coining the phrase ‘masterliness in education’. It provides a comparative background to inform the debate about the level at which teachers’ knowledge bases make them most effective in terms of both pedagogic expertise and pupils’ outcomes. The book examines and illustrates the relationship between master’s level education and professionalism through the lenses of reflective evaluation, narrative inquiry and critique. Discussion of issues of professionalism and acculturation of teachers exemplifies the tension that arises in modern educational systems across the world between teacher accountability and teacher autonomy and argues that masterliness in education can only be acquired through the professional freedom afforded by teacher autonomy within empowering frameworks of professional development. Several chapters deliberate the relationship between the roles of schools and higher education institutions in both initial and continuing teacher education at master’s level, providing argument and evidence to show that this partnership is crucial to the effectiveness of the professional development that supports improved outcomes for learners. This book demonstrates that masterliness in education, an aspiration of initial and continuing teacher education internationally, is a state of advanced professional critical thinking linked to action and informed by research and evidence. Through the exercise of this criticality teacher empowerment, expertise and autonomy increase as masterliness develops. There is considerable convergence in the provision of these elements of Masters’ level courses internationally, and this enables the debate to highlight good practice and to exemplify those essential characteristics of masterliness in teaching that lead to the continued improvement of learning in the world’s schools. This book was originally published as a special issue of Journal of Education for Teaching.

Book excerpt: This practical guide invites teachers to take a journey towards masterly mathematics teaching using the experiences and lessons learnt across five Chinese provinces, Anhui, Beijing, Jiangsu, Jiangxi and Tianjin. On this journey, you will gain a thorough understanding of: (1) the quality and characteristics of master mathematics teachers’ teaching, (2) the quality of mathematics learning they have nurtured amongst their students in affective, metacognitive and cognitive dimensions and (3) the teaching-learning mechanisms that underpin excellent performance in the three dimensions. Alongside the quantitative and qualitative evidence on educational excellence, you will also delve deep into the trajectories and processes of professional development that generate professional excellence amongst master mathematics teachers and their peers within and across primary schools, up and down China. Building on data collected with 70 master mathematics teachers and 3,178 students and from teaching research events at the school, municipal, provincial and national levels, the Master Mathematics Teachers (MasterMT) project is, to date, the first that has looked at the legendary tribe of master mathematics teachers in China at such a large scale, and with such breadth and depth. The book offers invaluable insights for any teacher or teacher educator who wants to improve mathematics teaching and learning and generate educational and professional excellence in primary schools and beyond. More information on the Master Mathematics Teachers (MasterMT) project can be accessed at https://mastermt.org/.

Book excerpt: This book highlights decisions governments have to make about their public education systems, the options they have before them and the consequences of their decisions. As well as covering issues such as values, curriculum, teacher training, structures and so on, the book addresses education planning for epidemics, pandemics and disasters. Education systems provide the foundations for the future wellbeing of every society, yet existing systems are a point of global concern. Education System Design is a response to debates in developing and developed countries about the characteristics of a high-quality national education service. It questions what makes a successful system of education. With chapters that draw on experience in education systems around the world, each one considers an element of a national education service and its role in providing a coherent and connected set of structures to ensure good education for all members of society. Key topics include: Existing education systems and what a future system might look like Inclusion and social justice Leadership and teacher education Policy options, and the consequences of policy changes This book suggests an education system be viewed as an ecosystem with interdependencies between many different components needing to be considered when change is contemplated. It is a vital book for any stakeholders in educational systems including students, teachers and senior leaders. It would be particularly useful to policy makers and those implementing policy changes.

Five chapters discuss: (1) "Understanding Mastery Learning" (e.g., the learning/memory base, the measurement base, theoretical bases, and the brain base); (2) "Examining the Standards: Math, Science, Social Studies, and English Language Arts" (e.g., mastery as a beginning, beyond mastery, and standards); (3) "Planning Standards-Based Lessons using Mastery Learning" (e.g., overlap among state and national standards, enrichment and remediation, and planning lessons using six elements of mastery learning); (4) "Implementing Standards and Mastery Learning in the Classroom" (13 steps to implementing mastery learning); and (5) "Professional Development and Mastery Learning" (e.g., a plan for action and a professional development agenda and teaching for mastery). The appendix looks at what the literature can tell (e.g., two approaches to mastery learning, empirical evidence, research examples, and memory by fast and slow learners). (Contains approximately 160 references.) (SM).
