In general the chemistry of atmospheric trace constituents is governed by the oxygen content of the atmosphere. Upon entering the atmosphere in a more or less reduced state, trace substances are oxidized via various pathways and the generated products are often precursors of acidic compounds. Beside oxidation processes occurring in the gas phase, gaseous compounds are often converted into solid aerosol particles. The various steps within gas-to-particle conversion are constantly interacting with condensation processes, which are caused by the tropospheric water content. Thus in addition to the gaseous state, a liquid and solid state exists within the troposphere. The solid phase consists of atmospheric conversion products or fly ash and mineral dust. The liquid phase consists of water, conversion products and soluble compounds. The chemistry occurring within this system is often referred to as hydrogeneous chemistry. The chemist interprets this term, however, more strictly as reactions which occur only at an interphase between phases. This, however, is not always what happens in the atmosphere. There are indeed heterogeneous processes such as reactions occurring on the surface of dry aerosol particles. But apart from these, we must focus as well on reactions in the homogeneous phase, which are single steps of consecutive reactions running through various phases.

Ion transfer across the biological membranes, behavior of ion-selective electrodes with liquid membranes and similar sensors, extraction processes, phase transfer catalysis and applications in electroanalytical chemistry can serve as examples. Present interest in the interface between two immiscible electrolytes (liquid liquid or L/L interface) was originated by Koryta's idea (Koryta, Vanysek and Brezina 1976) that the interface between immiscible liquids could serve as a simple model for one half of a biological membrane in the contact with the surrounding electrolyte. It was also Koryta who started using the acronym ITIES (Interface between Two Immiscible Electrolyte Solutions) which generally encompasses all the phenomena discussed in this book. Physiological and electrochemical investigations have certainly well established tradition. In his classic experiments with frog thighs Luigi Galvani discovered in 1791 relationship between electricity and nerves and muscles. As outlined by Koryta and Stullk (1983) in the introduction to their book, the study of electrophysiological phenomena did not progress much for several decades and only a few experiments were performed. For instance M. Faraday (Williams, 1965) studied the electricity produced by an electric fish and Du Bois-Reymond (1848) suggested that the surface of biological formations have properties similar to the electrode of a galvanic cell. However, the properties of biological membrane could not be explained before the first concept of electrochemistry was postulated.

The results of 24 individual research projects are presented. The main objective of the research programme was to provide a better understanding of the physical basis for multiphase gas-liquid flows as they are found in numerous chemical and biochemical reactors. The research comprises steady and unsteady multiphase flows in three frequently found reactor configurations, namely bubble columns without interiors, airlift loop reactors, and aerated stirred vessels. For this purpose new and improved measurement techniques were developed. From the resulting knowledge and data, new and refined models for describing the underlying physical processes were developed, which were used for the establishment and improvement of analytic as well as numerical methods for predicting multiphase reactors. Thereby, the development, lay-out and scale-up of such processes should be possible on a more reliable basis.

It is plausible that the generation of the primitive cell membrane is responsible for an accidental advent of the oldest liquid interfaces, since various compounds can be concentrated by an adsorption at the interface. The presence of liquid-liquid interface means that real liquids are far from ideal liquids that must be miscible with any kinds of liquids and have no interface. Thus it can be said that the non-ideality of liquids might generate the liquid-liquid interface indeed and that biological systems might be generated from the non-ideal interface. The liquid-liquid interface has been, therefore, studied as a model of biological membrane. From pairing two-phases of gas, liquid and solid, nine different pairs can be obtained, which include three homo-pairs of gas-gas, liquid-liquid and solid-solid pairs. The gas-gas interface, however, is practically no use under the ordinary conditions. Among the interfaces produced by the pairing, the liquid-liquid interface is most slippery and difficult to be studied experimentally in comparison with the gas-liquid and solid-liquid interfaces, as the liquid-liquid interface is flexible, thin and buried between bulk liquid phases. Therefore, in order to study the liquid-liquid interface, the invention of innovative measurement methods has a primary importance.
