Book excerpt: In the enchanting world of Regency-era England, where the opulence of high society entwines with the constraints of societal roles, lies a tale of hidden desires and forbidden romance. Welcome to 'Under the Moonlit Masquerade,' a captivating story that unfolds against the backdrop of an elegant masked ball, where secrets are cloaked beneath elaborate disguises and true identities remain shrouded in mystery. Our protagonist, Lady Elora, is a reluctant debutante weighed down by the expectations of her aristocratic lineage. Longing for a taste of freedom beyond her gilded cage, Elora finds herself drawn to a tantalizing proposition: a masked ball, an event that promises to whisk her away from the suffocating confines of her societal role. As she steps into the realm of anonymity, Elora transforms into an alluring stranger, liberated from the stifling expectations of her family and the watchful eyes of high society. Under the magical moonlit sky, she encounters a mysterious masked stranger equally determined to keep his true identity veiled from the world. Amidst the swirling dance of masks and emotions, a forbidden romance blooms, blurring the lines between duty and desire. As Elora and her masked companion share stolen moments under the moon's tender gaze, they find themselves irresistibly drawn to each other, their connection deepening with each passing heartbeat. But society's watchful eye is unyielding, and the risks they take threaten to expose their clandestine love, subjecting them to judgment, scandal, and shattered expectations. Faced with the disapproval of family, the whispering censure of gossiping elites, and the persistent pursuit of a jealous suitor, Elora and her masked love must navigate treacherous waters to keep their forbidden romance alive. As the clock strikes midnight, the masquerade draws to a close, and Elora must make a choice: abandon her heart's desires and return to the confines of society's expectations, or take a daring leap and embrace love, no matter the consequences. Join us on this mesmerizing journey as we delve into the delicate dance between duty and desire, the beauty of love's unyielding spirit, and the transformative power of the moonlit masquerade. Will Elora and her masked stranger find the strength to defy norms and seize their chance at happiness, or will they be forever bound by the constraints of society's dictates? Find out as the pages turn, revealing a tale that captures your heart and leaves you yearning for love under the moonlit masquerade.

Book excerpt: In its conventional meaning, masquerade refers to a festive gathering of people wearing masks and elegant costumes. But traditional forms of masquerade have evolved over the past century to include the representation of alternate identities in the media and venues of popular culture, including television, film, the internet, theater, museums, sports arenas, popular magazines and a range of community celebrations, reenactments and conventions. This collection of fresh essays examines the art and function of masquerade from a broad range of perspectives. From African slave masquerade in New World iconography, to the familiar Guy Fawkes masks of the Occupy Wall Street movement, to the branded identities created by celebrities like Madonna, Beyonce and Lady Gaga, the essays show how masquerade permeates modern life.

Book excerpt: Masquerade is the most comprehensive anthology yet published of poetry by American gays, lesbians, bisexuals, and transgendered persons. It includes representative poems from more than 100 writers from pre-colonial times to the end of the Second World War. The anthology begins with selections of anonymous texts from the oral traditions of Hawaii and Native America, followed by voodoo chants and cowboy songs (with a few limericks thrown in for good measure). The selections are arranged by the year of the poet's birth and include samplings of poetry by a racially and ethnically diverse group of men and women. Contemporary readers will know the work of some of these poets, such as Gertrude Stein and Walt Whitman. Other poets, such as George Santayana and Adah Isaacs Menken, will be strangers to most. In all, these poets created a rich heritage of verse that has been for the most part masked throughout the history of American literature.

Book excerpt: Set in a wonderfully reimagined 15th century West Africa, Masquerade is a dazzling, lyrical tale exploring the true cost of one woman’s fight for freedom and self-discovery, and the lengths she’ll go to secure her future. “A bewitching, thrilling and vibrant novel that had me enthralled with every twist and turn.” —Jennifer Saint, New York Times bestselling author Òdòdó’s hometown of Timbuktu has been conquered by the warrior king of Yorùbáland, and living conditions for the women in her blacksmith guild, who were already shunned as social pariahs, grow even worse. Then Òdòdó is abducted. She is whisked across the Sahara to the capital city of Ṣàngótẹ̀, where she is shocked to discover that her kidnapper is none other than the vagrant who had visited her guild just days prior. But now that he is swathed in riches rather than rags, Òdòdó realizes he is not a vagrant at all; he is the warrior king, and he has chosen her to be his wife. In a sudden change of fortune, Òdòdó soars to the very heights of society. But after a lifetime of subjugation, she finds the power that saturates this world of battle and political savvy too enticing to resist. As tensions with rival states grow, revealing elaborate schemes and enemies hidden in plain sight, Òdòdó must defy the cruel king she has been forced to wed by reforging the shaky loyalties of the court in her favor, or risk losing everything—including her life. Loosely based on the myth of Persephone, O.O. Sangoyomi’s Masquerade takes you on a journey of epic power struggles and political intrigue which turn an entire region on its head. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Public masquerades were a popular and controversial form of urban entertainment in England for most of the eighteenth century. They were held regularly in London and attended by hundreds, sometimes thousands, of people from all ranks of society who delighted in disguising themselves in fanciful costumes and masks and moving through crowds of strangers. The authors shows how the masquerade played a subversive role in the eighteenth-century imagination, and that it was persistently associated with the crossing of class and sexual boundaries, sexual freedom, the overthrow of decorum, and urban corruption. Authorities clearly saw it as a profound challenge to social order and persistently sought to suppress it. The book is in two parts. In the first, the author recreates the historical phenomenon of the English masquerade: the makeup of the crowds, the symbolic language of costume, and the various codes of verbal exchange, gesture, and sexual behavior. The second part analyzes contemporary literary representations of the masquerade, using novels by Richardson, Fielding, Burney, and Inchbald to show how the masquerade in fiction reflected the disruptive power it had in contemporary life. It also served as an indispensable plot-catalyst, generating the complications out of which the essential drama of the fiction emerged. An epilogue discusses the use of the masquerade as a literary device after the eighteenth century. The book contains some 40 illustrations.
