The dissolute behaviour of its citizens in the 18th century reached such depths that the use of masks was banned, but revived in the 1970s it has since become the prevailing image of Carnevale. In this elegantly- designed book the reader is offered a concise introduction to the history of the carnival and mask-wearing, illustrated by J.C. Brown's moody and evocative photos of Venetian masks and the beautiful city.

Book excerpt: The Carnival of Venice (Italian: Carnevale di Venezia) is an annual festival held in Venice, Italy. The Carnival ends with the Christian celebration of Lent, forty days before Easter, on Shrove Tuesday (Martedì Grasso or Mardi Gras), the day before Ash Wednesday. The festival is world-famous for its elaborate masks. It's said that the Carnival of Venice was started from a victory of the Venice Republic against the Patriarch of Aquileia, Ulrico di Treven in the year 1162. In the honour of this victory, the people started to dance and gather in San Marco Square. Apparently, this festival started on that period and became official in the Renaissance. It reappeared gradually in the nineteenth century, but only for short periods and above all for private feasts, where it became an occasion for artistic creations. After a long absence, the Carnival returned in 1979.[6] The Italian government decided to bring back the history and culture of Venice, and sought to use the traditional Carnival as the centerpiece of its efforts. The redevelopment of the masks began as the pursuit of some Venetian college students for the tourist trade. Since then, approximately 3 million visitors come to Venice every year for the Carnival.[7] One of the most important events is the contest for la maschera più bella ("the most beautiful mask") which will be judged by a panel of international costume and fashion designers. Several distinct styles of mask are worn in the Venice Carnival, some with identifying names. People with different occupations wore different masks.

But Laura's true mission is far more dangerous: she must locate a lost artifact tied to an ancient Venetian society that once held the city's hidden power. Haunted by past failures and driven by a need for redemption, Laura finds herself navigating the labyrinthine canals and shadowy underworld of Venice, where secrets are as common as the masks worn by revelers. At a masquerade ball, Laura unexpectedly crosses paths with Marco Valenti, a charming con artist and her former lover. Their past is fraught with betrayal and unresolved tension, and Marco's appearance in Venice feels both coincidental and deliberate. As Laura and Marco are forced into an uneasy alliance, they uncover a web of hidden vaults, secret codes, and deadly traps designed to protect a power that could change the city's future forever. With Ricci, a ruthless antagonist, and his men constantly on their trail, Laura and Marco must outwit not only their enemies but also their own mistrust of each other. Their journey takes them deep into the catacombs beneath Venice, where they face physical and emotional challenges that test their skills and resolve. As they race against time, Laura and Marco find themselves questioning their loyalties and the true nature of the artifact they seek. The stakes escalate when the artifact is revealed to be more than just a key to treasure-it's a cipher to Venice's darkest secrets, capable of shifting the balance of power in the city. Marco, driven by both selfish and noble motives, makes a harrowing sacrifice to protect Laura and the artifact, forcing them both to confront their pasts and what they truly want from their futures. In a dramatic showdown on one of Venice's iconic bridges, Laura and Marco outsmart their pursuers, but not without paying a heavy price. The truth of the artifact is made public in a controlled revelation, aiming to protect Venice's heritage while exposing the hidden powers that have long shaped the city. As the dust settles, Laura receives an unexpected offer to lead a new expedition, leaving her to ponder the future and whether Marco will join her on another daring adventure. Set against the backdrop of Venice's enchanting canals and masked celebrations, The Venetian Masquerade is a thrilling tale of secrets, betrayals, and the unbreakable bond between two people searching for redemption. It's a story where every discovery unearths another layer of mystery, and where the past refuses to stay buried.

Book excerpt: The images in this book, taken at the Venice Carnival in 1996, 97, and 98 by the Greek photographer Pericles Boutos, illuminate and unmask this age-old Venetian tradition. Following in the footsteps of the great French-American tradition of photographers like Cartier-Bresson and Garry Winogrand, Boutos brings to the fore a Carnival which has lost, along with color, its very identity. That his images capture the contemporary reality of this much photographed spectacle without any cliche or shopworn excess is a testament to the photographer, who portrays with deceptive ease the behind-the-scenes rituals of the carnival's baroque proceedings.
