Book Synopsis Bess of Hardwick: Empire Builder by : Mary S. Lovell
Download or read book Bess of Hardwick: Empire Builder written by Mary S. Lovell and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 2007-06-17 with total page 577 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The best account yet available of this shrewd, enigmatic and remarkable woman."—Sunday Times [London] From the author of The Sisters, a chronicle of the most brutal, turbulent, and exuberant period of England's history. Bess Hardwick, the fifth daughter of an impoverished Derbyshire nobleman, did not have an auspicious start in life. Widowed at sixteen, she nonetheless outlived four monarchs, married three more times, built the great house at Chatsworth, and died one of the wealthiest and most powerful women in English history. In 1527 England was in the throes of violent political upheaval as Henry VIII severed all links with Rome. His daughter, Queen Mary, was even more capricious and bloody, only to be followed by the indomitable and ruthless Gloriana, Elizabeth I. It could not have been more hazardous a period for an ambitious woman; by the time Bess's first child was six, three of her illustrious godparents had been beheaded. Using journals, letters, inventories, and account books, Mary S. Lovell tells the passionate, colorful story of an astonishingly accomplished woman, among whose descendants are counted the dukes of Devonshire, Rutland, and Portland, and, on the American side, Katharine Hepburn.

Every day the women and men of the NSW Police Rescue and Bomb Disposal Unit confront some of the most challenging and harrowing situations imaginable; including recovering decomposing bodies from cliffs, cutting people out of the wreckage of crashed cars, or disarming improvised explosive devices. Nerves of steel, compassion and dedication to duty are the core requirements for police rescue operators and bomb technicians. Police Rescue and Bomb Disposal takes you on a journey from the dark days of World War II when police first formed a unit to recover bodies from Sydney’s cliffs, to the unit leading rescue operations at the Granville train disaster, the Newcastle earthquake, the Thredbo landslide, and other emergencies up to and including the Lindt Café siege. Drawing upon numerous interviews and official documents this book is complimented by many never seen before images and is a fitting testament to the dedication and personal sacrifices made by a small band of highly skilled professionals.
Book Synopsis The Secret Teachings of Mary Magdalene by : Claire Nahmad
Download or read book The Secret Teachings of Mary Magdalene written by Claire Nahmad and published by Watkins Media Limited. This book was released on 2012-01-01 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This in-depth commentary on the lost material of The Gospel of Mary Magdalene presents Jesus’ most important—and misunderstood—disciple as you’ve never seen her before Discovered in fragments in Egypt in 1945, The Gospel of Mary remains one of the most controversial texts of early Christianity. This translation of Mary’s teachings, from the original Greek and Coptic, offers a unique new perspective: authors Claire Nahmad and Margaret Bailey utilized “inner listening” to uncover lost material, and they present Mary’s ideas in the form of a dialogue between the (risen) Savior and His disciples. Most importantly, The Secret Teachings of Mary Magdalene includes a description by Mary of special revelations given to her by Jesus. Nahmad and Bailey argues that Mary was not just the consort of Christ but the feminine Christ herself, and in their view, the partnership between Jesus and Mary exemplifies the crucial balance of male and female in spiritual and corporeal life. It’s an interpretation that uncovers a rich subtext in Mary's words, offering wisdom on an extraordinary range of concerns—from the origins of the human race to the pathway to Christlike consciousness.

Book Synopsis Before Guadalupe by : Louise M. Burkhart
Download or read book Before Guadalupe written by Louise M. Burkhart and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2001 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The introduction of the Virgin Mary to the native peoples of Mexico is often closely associated with Our Lady of Guadalupe, the principal Mexican Marian devotion. Historical evidence indicates that the Mexican shrine was not established until the 1560s, the legend was virtually unknown until its initial publication in Spanish in 1648 and in Nahuatl the following year; and native people did not participate in the devotion to any extensive degree until after the mid-seventeenth century. How, then, was devotion to the Virgin actually introduced to Nahuas during the first decades of Christian evangelization? This book addresses this question through the presentation of Nahuatl-language devotional texts relating to Mary, texts through which Nahuas learned about the Virgin and expressed their own developing devotion to her. The wide range of Nahuatl literature on the Virgin shows that Nahuas were introduced to, and to varying degrees participated in, the full-blown medieval and Renaissance devotion to Mary, adapted into their own language. Native scholars participated in the composition of much of this material. Nahuatl text and English translation are presented in parallel columns. Each text is preceded by introductory commentary that explicates the European background of the material and its new meanings and uses in the Mexican context.
