Download or read book Annals of Sandy Spring written by William Henry Farquhar and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The text consists of the annual records compiled by historian William Henry Farquhar for the Lyceum Company of Sandy Spring in Montgomery County, Maryland, north of Bethesda. Farquhar's annals provide an intimate portrait of this rural Maryland community at a time of great transition, 1863-1883. The introductory chapters provide a historical overview of Sandy Spring in the days of its early settlement, noting early land owners, local Indian tribes, flora, fauna, agricultural concerns, the influence of Quakers on the community, emancipation and the establishment of the Lyceum Company, a literary and historical society organized in the early 1860s by the local farmers "desirous of improving their minds while cultivating their farms." Each subsequent chapter relates a year's worth of Farquhar's reminiscences, detailing a diverse selection of events which effected the community and providing brief obituaries for those who passed away during that time. Topics of interest include: the Confederate invasion of Maryland and battles near Sandy Spring; farm and soil improvements; new school buildings; new roads and the Metropolitan Railroad at Rockville; fires and flood; Quaker meetings; telegraphs and telephones; barn raising; the dairy industry; the Farmers Convention; the immigration of Baltimoreans; aid rendered to yellow fever victims; sanitation and much more. A new index of full names has been compiled for this edition.

Book excerpt: Images of America: Historic Silver Spring celebrates the community's past, beginning with founder Francis Preston Blair's 1840 discovery of the mica-flecked spring and the 1873 arrival of the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad. Vintage photographs document the progressive growth of the "Main Streets," Georgia Avenue and Colesville Road, and the construction of the Silver Spring Armory and National Dry Cleaning Institute in 1927 and the Silver Theatre and Silver Spring Shopping Center in 1938. The volume culminates with modern pictures of downtown Silver Spring's 21st-century revitalization, which continues to preserve the past and secure the future of the area. In a pictorial journey through the community's Central Business District and bordering residential neighborhood, East Silver Spring, Historic Silver Spring honors the people and places that have come before.

Book Synopsis The AOC Way by : Caroline Fredrickson
Download or read book The AOC Way written by Caroline Fredrickson and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2020-01-07 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Understanding and applying the wisdom of Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez! In an incredibly short time, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has galvanized the country on issues of national importance. This young member of Congress has motivated Democrats to confront climate change and income inequality and is upending conventional wisdom about how young women, especially women of color, are supposed to behave. Her background, including a family that fell out of the middle class due to health care challenges, has driven her to champion those on the margins, such as low-wage workers, immigrants, people of color, and younger people who face a future of climate disruption and instability. This book takes life lessons from the rising star known as AOC and offers readers a chance to apply them to their own lives. In five chapters, The AOC Way weaves substantive issues and AOC’s experiences to understand how she so quickly came to dominate media coverage in America but also to drive real change in what seems like a lightening flash. AOC has demonstrated some key values and commitments on her way to success, such as believing in yourself and not letting haters take you off course; working hard and being prepared to prove your talents; bringing your experiences to your work by not forgetting how you got where you are; challenging the status quo; and staying true to your friends and allies.
