Book excerpt: The counter-intuitive aspects of quantum physics have been long illustrated by thought experiments, from Einstein's photon box to Schrödinger's cat. These experiments have now become real, with single particles - electrons, atoms, or photons - directly unveiling the strange features of the quantum. State superpositions, entanglement and complementarity define a novel quantum logic which can be harnessed for information processing, raising great hopes for applications. This book describes a class of such thought experiments made real. Juggling with atoms and photons confined in cavities, ions or cold atoms in traps, is here an incentive to shed a new light on the basic concepts of quantum physics. Measurement processes and decoherence at the quantum-classical boundary are highlighted. This volume, which combines theory and experiments, will be of interest to students in quantum physics, teachers seeking illustrations for their lectures and new problem sets, researchers in quantum optics and quantum information.

Book excerpt: Sacred Playgrounds explores the wisdom of camping ministry for Christian education and faith formation, examining its rich history and fundamental characteristics with compelling stories, groundbreaking research, and theological grounding. Christian summer camp is an integral part of the ecology of faith formation in North America, though it has received surprisingly little attention in the scholarly community until now. Camping ministry is often dismissed as simple fun and games or a brief spiritual high that does not last. However, camp experiences often serve as deeply relational and immersive faith experiences that have lasting impacts on participants. Five fundamental characteristics combine dynamically in the effective camp experience: participatory, faith-centered, safe space, relational, and unplugged from home. Together, they open the space for participants to consider new understandings of God, to have time for deep self-reflection, and to build intentional Christian community. These camp experiences are essential components in a larger ecology of faith formation, including the home and congregation. The insight and evidence presented in this book demonstrate that the contributions of camping ministry must be taken seriously among scholars, Christian educators, and ministry professionals.

This book was released on 2017-11-22 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Plant organ abscission is a developmental process regulated by the environment, stress, pathogens and the physiological status of the plant. In particular, seed and fruit abscission play an important role in seed dispersion and plant reproductive success and are common domestication traits with important agronomic consequences for many crop species. Indeed, in natural populations, shedding of the seed or fruit at the correct time is essential for reproductive success, while for crop species the premature or lack of abscission may be either beneficial or detrimental to crop productivity. The use of model plants, in particular Arabidopsis and tomato, have led to major advances in our understanding of the molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying organ abscission, and now many workers pursue the translation of these advances to crop species. Organ abscission involves specialized cell layers called the abscission zone (AZ), where abscission signals are perceived and cell separation takes place for the organ to be shed. A general model for plant organ abscission includes (1) the differentiation of the AZ, (2) the acquisition of AZ cells to become competent to respond to various abscission signals, (3) response to signals and the activation of the molecular and cellular processes that lead to cell separation in the AZ and (4) the post-abscission events related to protection of exposed cells after the organ has been shed. While this simple four-phase framework is helpful to describe the abscission process, the exact mechanisms of each stage, the differences between organ types and amongst diverse species, and in response to different abscission inducing signals are far from elucidated. For an organ to be shed, AZ cells must transduce a multitude of both endogenous and exogenous signals that lead to transcriptional and cellular and ultimately cell wall modifications necessary for adjacent cells to separate. How these key processes have been adapted during evolution to allow for organ abscission to take place in different locations and under different conditions is unknown. The aim of the current proposal is to present and be able to compare recent results on our understanding of organ abscission from model and crop species, and to provide a basis to understand both the evolution of abscission in plants and the translation of advances with model plants for applications in crop species.

One such area is health. The following questions are discussed in the book:Does investing in health raise economic growth? Can governments achieve rapid growth or high incomes without investing in health? What are the options and benefits of different an.

Book excerpt: Jiggle: (Re)Shaping American Women explores the relationship between American women and their bodies as mediated by both traditional and contemporary foundation garments. This post-corsetry study begins in the 1930s with a discussion of traditional foundation garments and continues with an analysis of contemporary shapewear as these garments shape women physically, culturally, and socially. Jiggle focuses on the corporate, cultural, and individual practices and meanings of women's experiences with foundation garments. Referencing trade journals, industry data, statistics, advertisements, and telephone surveys and interviews with women, author Wendy Burns-Ardolino examines how the contested terrain of fashion and beauty culture reflect larger cultural power struggles. Jiggle argues that women should not be complicit in alienating themselves from their bodies, but rather should embrace their bodies' multiple capacities as they practice fasion, femininity, and gendered performatives.

Book excerpt: Around the world hepatitis has infected more than 2 billion people (10 million in the US) and is, in its chronic form, the leading factor in end-stage liver disease and the rising incidence of hepatocellular carcinoma. In Chronic Viral Hepatitis: Diagnosis and Therapeutics, leading scientists, clinicians, and clinical investigators comprehensively review the epidemiology, molecular virology, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of chronic hepatitis caused by the B and C viruses. The discussion of patient management includes contributions on developing novel therapeutics, supporting patients during therapy, alternative treatments, the use of drugs in chronic viral hepatitis, liver transplantation, and pregnancy in chronic viral hepatitis. Attention is also given to the treatment of patients with concomitant autoimmune disorders, the management of HIV co-infection, and the management of HBV/HCV co-infection. Each chapter provides an extensive review of available literature and is based on broad experience in clinical trials and the management of patients with chronic viral hepatitis. Authoritative and eminently practical, Chronic Viral Hepatitis: Diagnosis and Therapeutics offers today's gastroenterologists, primary care physicians, hepatologists, and infectious disease specialists a critical understanding of the state-of-the-art in chronic viral hepatitis and insightful projections of the many powerful new therapeutics now emerging.
