Book excerpt: A mirror of Baltimore and its population, an unsurpassed reference tool for genealogists, a collection of stories about Baltimore's famous and obscure, this is an unusual book. Jane B. Wilson here uses cemeteries to show us more than the graves of Baltimore's famous, infamous, everyday, and anonymous citizens and soldiers. She demonstrates how the cemeteries' creation and dissolution reflect the greed, courage, wit, loyalty, carelessness, and spirituality of Maryland's citizens.

Book Synopsis White Servitude in Colonial America by : David W. Galenson
Download or read book White Servitude in Colonial America written by David W. Galenson and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1982-03-11 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: White servitude was one of the major institutions in the economy and society of early colonial British America. In fact more than half of all the white immigrants to the British colonies sold themselves into bondage for a period of years in order to migrate to the New World. Professor Galenson's study of the system of indentured servitude analyses rigourously the composition of this labour force and provides a quantitative description of the demographic, social and economic characteristics of more than 20,000 indentured immigrants. The author examines the interactions between indentured, free and slave labour and provides a framework for analysing why black slavery prevailed over white servitude in the British West Indies and the southern mainland colonies and why both types of bound labour declined to insignificance in the northern colonies of the mainland.

Book Synopsis Baltimore's Lexington Market by : Patricia Schultheis
Download or read book Baltimore's Lexington Market written by Patricia Schultheis and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2007-02 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lexington Market was established in 1782 by Revolutionary War hero John Eager Howard, who donated a plot of land in Baltimore's "western precincts" for a public market. Accessible to farmers from the outlying countryside, Howard's Hill Market, as it was known, became an instant success. Undeterred by the lack of a proper market house, farmers set up plank stalls and began selling fresh meat, eggs, and vegetables to the burgeoning city's population. Almost as soon as a market house was built in 1803, petitions circulated to expand it, a process that continued throughout the 19th century until the market included three block-long sheds with hundreds of stalls spilling down neighboring streets. Far from signaling Lexington Market's end, a disastrous fire in 1949 provided an opportunity for a modern facility with refrigeration and stoves, enabling each stall keeper to bake, roast, or steam according to his own unique recipe. With the addition of an arcade, the market has continued to reinvent itself while maintaining a place in Baltimore's heart for 225 years.
