Book excerpt: This is the sixth collection to be published. It focusses on the time not long after Mary MacKillop's excommunication when she was encouraged to go to Rome to seek approval for the Rule of the Sisters of St Joseph. Mary set off alone, travelling incognito, with little money and no knowledge of where to stay or how she would travel. Her letters and her diary during 1873 show her amazing trust in the Providence of God as well as her very human feelings of loneliness, her worry about the Sisters back in Australia and her delight in visiting the holy places especially St Peter's Basilica. Little did Mary MacKillop dream that in 2010 thousands would gather in St Peter's Square to see her photo hanging from the Basilica as she was proclaimed a Saint by Pope Benedict XVI.

Book excerpt: In July 1872 three Sisters of St Joseph and one lay woman arrived at The Vale, a village near Bathurst, New South Wales. They had come from Adelaide in response to an invitation from the Catholic bishop of Bathurst to establish a foundation of the newly founded Congregation in his diocese--the first Josephite foundation in New South Wales. Sister Teresa McDonald was the leader or Superior of the founding community. Born in Scotland in 1838, she had come to Australia with her parents finally settling in Adelaide. A friend of both Father Julian Tenison Woods and Mother Mary MacKillop, she joined the Sisters of St Joseph in 1867. This book explores her early life and her time as a Sister of St Joseph in Adelaide where she served as the first Provincial of the Congregation in South Australia. It also gives particular attention to Teresa's short years at The Vale, her struggle with ill health and her death in January 1876.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the third and final volume of the landmark, award-winning series The Europeans in Australia that gives an account of settlement by Britain. It tells of the various ways in which that experience shaped imagination and belief among the settler people from the eighteenth century to the end of World War I.Volume Three, Nation, tells the story of Australian Federation and the war with a focus, as ever on ordinary habits of thought and feeling. In this period, for the first time the settler people began to grasp the vastness of the continent, and to think of it as their own. There was a massive funding of education, and the intellectual reach of men and women was suddenly expanded, to an extent that seemed dazzling to many at the time. Women began to shape public imagination as they had not done before. At the same time, the worship of mere ideas had its victims, most obviously the Aboriginal people, and the war itself proved what vast tragedies it could unleash. The culmination of an extraordinary career in the writing and teaching of Australian history, The Europeans in Australia grapples with the Australian historical experience as a whole from the point of view of the settlers from Europe. Ambitious and unique, it is the first such large, single-author account since Manning Clark’s A History of Australia.

Book excerpt: Women in Christianity in the Age of Empire (1800–1920) offers a broad view of the nineteenth century as a time of dramatic change, particularly for women, critiqued in the light of postcolonial theory. This edited volume includes important contributions from academics in the field. Overarching themes include the cult of domesticity, the changing impact of Christianity on views of women’s nature in an age of scientific thinking, conflation of ‘gospel’ and ‘civilization’ in global mission, and the exclusion of women from public spheres of life. We meet powerful saints, campaigners, and thinkers, who bring about genuine transformation in the lives of women, and in society. But we also recognize the long shadow of Empire in the world of the twenty-first century, critiquing Colonialism and Empire, and views that restricted women’s lives. This engaging volume will be of key interest to students and scholars in Religion and Cultural Studies. Exploring the complexities of the nineteenth centur,y it draws on a range of scholarship, including TV documentaries, film, online, and more traditional academic resources.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2010 Mary MacKillop became the first Australian citizen to be officially proclaimed a saint by the Catholic Church. This event, and the long canonisation process which preceded it, has received much coverage in the Australian media. Yet confusion persists over what exactly it means to be a saint. In this book scholars from the Catholic Theological College of South Australia and the Flinders University School of Theology share reflections from different perspectives: historical, biblical, philosophical, theological, ethical, spiritual, liturgical and personal. Veneration of St Mary MacKillop is set in the context of a tradition which can be traced back to Christian martyrs in the ancient Roman Empire, and which, it is argued, is still meaningful today.

Book excerpt: This is of course a story of how a religious order gave new expression to its distinctive values and tradition in establishing a wider community of lay associates. The Sisters of St Joseph from the outset were practical, adaptable and relatively informal - focused on meeting needs where they saw them and stretching themselves thin to do so. Mary Cresp captures these Josephite values beautifully as she unfolds the development of the order's Associates/Companions. But it's not a book just about the Josephites. It's much more - a case study in how Catholic communities in several countries have responded to the challenges of the Second Vatican Council and to changing times. For that it's well worth a read. Peter Cahalan PhD - formerly CEO of the History Trust of South Australia. In her history of Josephite Associates over 40 years, Mary Cresp rsj informs her scholarly experience and thoroughness with documentation and contributions from more than 200 people who were themselves involved in creating that story. She describes the evolution of Josephite Associates to Josephite Companions as a "story of relationships". It is a story with lessons about relationships and formation, but also about persistence of vision, about living with unresolved questions, about fostering the emergence of new leadership and above all about walking together with joy in a shared baptismal mission. Anne Benjamin, Honorary Professor, Australian Catholic University. Consultant to Biographical Dictionary of Australian Catholic Educators.

Book excerpt: The essays in this very timely volume, each in its own way, journey with Joseph. The discerning reader will enjoy the richness and variety of Joseph's legacy as seen through the eyes of the writers, who bear the title Josephite and who generously share their knowledge, experience, reflection and prayer of this saint, whom Julian Tenison Woods calls 'the Prince of God's House who was among the poorest of men and hidden with Mary and Jesus' (4 September, 1887). Sister Lauretta Baker rsj, Congregational Leader, Sisters of St. Joseph, Lochinvar Who better than the Josephites to give us an "inside" look at the character who gave early shape to Jesus' Jewish life and spirituality. When Mary MacKillop and Julian Woods were establishing a new religious group in Australia, why did they turn to Joseph as their identity-marker? Human aspirations, Gospel verses, and ancient legends all met to sow the seeds that would flourish in this soil, and be known with respect and gratitude as "the Joeys." Professor Mary Coloe, pbvm. Yarra Theological Union, University of Divinity, Melbourne. It is often said that 'actions speak louder than words. In the case of St Joseph this is so true. With no recorded utterances in the Scriptures, we have only to rely on his deeds. Journeying with Joseph is a timely publication not only for the Year of St Joseph, but one which allows us to delve more deeply into how we might draw inspiration from him to follow more closely the path of being a missionary Disciple, in a world deeply affected by COVID. The net is cast well and wide when you survey the topics contained in this book, and these show that while St Joseph may not have spoken any words, his deeds were, and are, profound. Patrick O'Regan DD, Archbishop of Adelaide, (Josephite Companion).

Book excerpt: Never See a Need is an account of the lives and works of the Sisters of St Joseph of the Sacred Heart in South Australia from the time of their foundation in 1866 until Mary MacKillop's canonisation in 2010. Much happened during those 144 years. There were dark times and bright times, times of growth and expansion interspersed with times of decline, times of stability and times of change, and through it all, the members of the Congregation never forgot their call to do what they could to remedy the evils and ills of their society. They were educators, but they also looked out for the welfare of the poor and disadvantaged in different ways as they moved across the landscape to wherever they were needed, always a "people on the move" but always stable in their devotion to their ministry.

This is a story about the work of the Sisters of St Joseph, an Australian Catholic Religious Order of women, founded by St Mary Mackillop, in Tasmania. An intriguing story of a group of women who were not part of the Centralised Josephite Sisters under Mary Mackillop, who for a variety of reasons were under the diocesan Catholic Bishop in Tasmania. The books documents their 125 year history from foundation right through to Vatican approval of the being brought under the Federation of Josephite Sisters in Australia.

Book excerpt: Innocent! That final verdict came after George Cardinal Pell endured a gruelling four years of accusations, investigations, trials, public humiliations, and more than a year of imprisonment after being convicted by an Australian court of a crime he did not commit. Led off to jail in handcuffs, following his sentencing on March 13, 2019, the 78-year-old Australian prelate began what was meant to be six years in jail for historical sexual assault offenses. Cardinal Pell endured more than thirteen months in solitary confinement, before the Australian High Court voted 7-0 to overturn his original convictions. His victory over injustice was not just personal, but one for the entire Catholic Church. Bearing no ill will toward his accusers, judges, prison workers, journalists, and those harbouring and expressing hatred for him, the cardinal used his time in prison as a kind of extended retreat. He eloquently filled notebook pages with his spiritual insights, prison experiences, and personal reflections on current events both inside and outside the Church, as well as moving prayers. In this third and final volume, Cardinal Pell''s conviction is overturned by Australia''s High Court, and he is released from prison. As his appeal draws near, he grows in confidence that his case is strong and that his vindication is important not only for his own sake and the Church''s sake, but also for the sake of Australia''s legal system. While continuing his daily readings and devotions, and receiving hundreds of letters with offers of prayers and sacrifices on his behalf, the cardinal ponders the meaning of suffering in the life of the Christian, and he determines to accept with equanimity whatever outcome lies ahead.
