Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mary Jane: Or, Spiritualism Chemically Explained With Spirit Drawings When I want to part with a horse, I prefer selling him by auction, with all faults. If a friend buys him there, he ought not to blame me if he finds him very stiff the day after a run. With a book, however, it is different; and, that my brothers and sisters of the human race may not blame me for having allowed them to spend their money in buying, or their time in reading, this book, I state at once that it is materialistic, and that it has been carefully reviewed by one of the most amiable and orthodox Clergymen in England. The first part is a history of Spiritualism, with a focus on its origins within America and the development of the organisation within itself. Next, Nelson considers the rise of Spiritualism in Britain, using evidence taken from contemporary journals, other publications and interviews. Finally, the Spiritualist movement is analysed in terms of sociological theory, looking at the Church and the definition of a Cult, as well as concepts of authority and leadership. This is a fascinating work, which will be of great interest to students researching the origins and development of the movement of Spiritualism and its relationship with society.

Book Synopsis Possessed Victorians by : Sarah A. Willburn
Download or read book Possessed Victorians written by Sarah A. Willburn and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-05-15 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In her absorbing study of nineteenth-century mystical writings, Sarah Willburn formulates a new conception of individualism that offers a fresh look at Victorian subjectivity. Drawing upon extensive archival work in the British Library, Willburn analyzes séance accounts, novels about mediumship, and metaphysical treatises to make important connections between contemporary writings on mysticism and fictional works. Willburn presents the theories of compelling characters such as Newton Crosland and Lois Waisbrooker and provides exciting new readings of well-known texts by Charlotte Brontë, Eliot, Martineau, and Corelli. An understanding of the Victorian fascination with mysticism, Willburn argues, leads to a better appreciation of cultural constructions of the citizen in England and of the public sphere. She introduces two key concepts against the backdrop of popular mysticism: "possessed individualism," a model for Victorian individualism based on spiritual possession, and "extra spheres," which complicate the traditional binary opposition of public and private. Together, these formulations urge us to rethink our views of Victorian political economy and gender as they pertain to mystical and religious practices.

Book Synopsis Evenings at Home in Spiritual Seance by : Georgiana Houghton
Download or read book Evenings at Home in Spiritual Seance written by Georgiana Houghton and published by Victorian Secrets. This book was released on 2013 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spanning the years 1870-1881, Evenings at Home in Spiritual Seance (Second Series ) documents the everyday, yet astonishing, experiences of spirit activity within the domestic space of the Victorian parlour. Through the intimacy of her diary-like prose, Houghton conjures cosy images of spirits laying the table for tea in what she called the "interblending of the heavenly and the mundane." She is equally comfortable communicating with her beloved pet dove as she is with the archangel Gabriel, living an unassuming yet spiritually rich life, filled with people of this world and the next. Houghton narrates her experiences of seances and trance mediumship with close friends, discusses her own automatic spirit drawings, and offers an autobiographical glimpse into her day-to-day business. This critical edition, edited by Sara Williams, includes: * Introduction * Author biography * Select bibliography * Explanatory footnotes * Appendices on 'Houghton in the Spiritualist press', 'Automatic spirit drawings' and 'Houghton's spirit photography'
