Book Synopsis ...And Then What Happened? by : Alta Mae Stevens

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: And Then What Happened? reviews the career of Harold R. Harris that for a remarkable near-eighty years involved every aspect of aviation. An engineer, he was notable for his fearless innovations, from night flying and airport lighting to test piloting to techniques for overseeing the redesign of aircraft for cotton dusting or the transport of large heavy machinery. Harris was unique in his ability to transition between the worlds of the military (in both World Wars) and commercial aviation. A practical man, he excelled at hands-on operations. A good deal has been written about his early exploits, including the famous emergency parachute jump. Until now, however, little has been written about his administrative ability, his concern for the safety of both passengers and crew or his talent through hard work and dogged persistence at achieving the realization of a dream. Regarding Harris personal exploits, Justin H. Libby, known for publishing a series of articles covering the exploits of early aviators, observed . . .how many [people [besides Harold Harris] have ever had 26 flying records. . .as well as being inducted into probably the two most prestigious air societies: the American Institute of Astronautics and Aeronautics and the Society of Experimental Test Pilots? In the larger picture, this book is a tribute to the contribution made by one man, Harold Ross Harris, to the amazing history of powered flight in the U.S, and throughout the world.

Book excerpt: Since the 1920s, Birmingham, Alabama, has played a vital role in the development of aviation in the Deep South and the nation. From aircraft construction to Air Guard activity, and from the evolution of commercial airlines to military training bases, Birmingham has contributed greatly to one of the most significant advancements of the twentieth century. Deep South Aviation explores the fascinating history of aviation in and around Birmingham through vintage images of the pilots, aircraft, and aviation enthusiasts of years past. Included are photographs of the early airfields, the Alabama Air National Guard, and the Birmingham Naval Air Station. Culled from the archives of the Southern Museum of Flight, these captivating images tell a story that began with a few brave individuals who surmounted the sky. Photographs were also taken from Alvin W. Hudson's collections on Fairgrounds Air Shows, Roberts Field, and the Birmingham Municipal Airport; Cecil Greene's collection on the Alabama Air National Guard; and generous friends of the museum who donated from their private collections.

Book excerpt: UW Archives holds up to three copies of each volume of the yearbook from its initial publication in 1884 to its final publication in 2014 (129 volumes). The publication of the yearbook did not become annual until 1887, as such there are no yearbooks for 1885 or 1886. The only other interruption in yearbooks was for the years 1973 and 1974. There are still yearbooks from these years, but they were published by the Wisconsin Alumni Association rather than the student body, as such they are spare, consisting mostly of portraits of students. UW Archives currently holds at least one copy of every published volume. The 1st copy of each volume is held onsite at UW Archives while the second and third copies, where they exist, are held offsite.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Civil War histories typically center on the deeds of generals and sweeping depictions of battle. This unique study of one Southern county's war experience tells of ordinary soldiers and their wives, mothers and children, slaves, farmers, merchants, Unionists and deserters--through an examination of tax records. The recently discovered 1863 Gaston County, North Carolina, tax list provides a detailed economic and social picture of a war-weary community, recording what taxpayers owned, cataloging slaves by name, age and monetary value, and assessing luxury items. Contemporary diaries, letters and other previously unpublished documents complete the picture, describing cotton mill operations, the lives of slaves, political disagreements, rationales for soldiers' enlistments and desertions, and economic struggles on the home front.
