Book Synopsis The Violence of the Lamb by : Paul Middleton
Download or read book The Violence of the Lamb written by Paul Middleton and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2018-05-03 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The act of martyrdom in the worldview of the Apocalypse has been considered to be an exemplification of non-violent resistance. Paul Middleton argues here, however, that it is in fact a representation of direct participation by Christians, through their martyrdom, in divine violence against those the author of Revelation portrays as God's enemies. Middleton shows that acceptance of martyrdom is to grasp the invitation to participate in the Revelation's divine violence. Martyrs follow the model laid down by the Lamb, who was not only slain, but resurrected, glorified, and who executes judgement. The world created by the Apocalypse encourages readers to conquer the Beast through martyrdom, but also through the experience of resurrection and being appointed judges. In this role, martyrs participate in the judgement of the wicked by sharing the Lamb's power to judge. Different from eschewing violence, the conceptual world of the Apocalypse portrays God, the Lamb, and the martyrs as possessing more power, might, and violent potential than the Emperor and his armies. Middleton believes that martyrdom and violence are necessary components of the worldview of Revelation.

Download or read book Martyr’s Manual written by Wayne Brouwer and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2019-05-28 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Faith" gets its most powerful definition from the New Testament book of Hebrews. Yet this anonymous treatise tantalizes with both its lack of contemporary precision about faith's definition and its shrouded original context. There are, however, sufficient clues in Hebrew's text to guide astute investigators toward a strange and yet familiar world of religious challenge in which the deeply significant rituals of ancient Israel, the attractive moral character of first-century Jews in Rome, a crowd of disaffected righteous Romans, and a purported Palestinian messiah converge to produce one of the world's most thoughtful, courageous, and brilliant calls to martyrdom. In this careful pilgrimage along the author's meticulous development of a holy challenge to remain faithful to Jesus (precisely because there are no meaningful alternatives), Brouwer helps us find an inspiring and ever-relevant call to faith--we become the persons we are through the daily choices we make about Jesus and others.

Book Synopsis Radical Revelation by : Balázs M. Mezei
Download or read book Radical Revelation written by Balázs M. Mezei and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2017-11-30 with total page 393 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume offers a practical and innovative interpretation of divine revelation, from a philosophical-theological perspective. Balázs M. Mezei outlines the most important presuppositions of our notion of divine revelation in a historic and semantic setting, as well as elaborating upon the methodology of model analysis. He then introduces and analyses the notion of self-revelation as the most important modern understanding of divine revelation; and presents the notion of “apocalyptic personhood” as a corollary of radical personhood, which is further developed into apocalyptic phenomenology. Mezei further examines the remarkable development of some of the most important notions in the history of Christianity, along with the homogenous infrastructure of these notions in the very essence of the religion: the doctrine of Trinity. Covering aspects of revelation from semantics to historical and cognitive origins, and engaging with a wide variety of texts – including Augustine, Thomas Aquinas and Joseph Ratzinger – Mezei makes a strong and clear statement when explaining what the radical revelation is, how it can be understood and its overall importance.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume makes a contribution to interpretation of this Gospel focusing attention on the Gospel itself as a series of conversations between the early Christian prophet and his immediate audience, the charismatic leaders and their followers in the churches of Judea and Jerusalem before the war with Rome, A.D. 66-70. The context of these conversations is one of great danger, often of martyrdom, which impelled the spirit-guided prophet to address to his charismatic colleagues these messages from the risen Lord. The book analyzes the central thrust of these messages, provoking fresh encounters between modern readers and the ancient author.
