Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Martin County in the World War, 1917-1919 The preparation of this work was undertaken in order that the record of Martin County's services and sacrifices in the field and at home during the World War might be preserved to posterity. Martin County will have cause ever to reflect with pride upon what her people did in the great war for the preservation of our liberty and the overthrow of monarchical despotism and autocracy. The record herein contained is written imperfectly and incompletely, the material collected and collated while the memories of the war are fresh in the minds of all. It is the hope of the publishers that the work will possess the merit of interest to the people of this period and be of some historical value to future generations. The preparation of the individual records of the service men and women has involved almost endless labor and research, accomplished in nearly every case by personal interviews. The data has been assembled by one thoroughly conversant with military terminology and organization. It is therefore reasonably believed that a maximum of accuracy has been attained. It is a matter of regret to the publishers that not every individual record is complete and accompanied by a portrait. Every endeavor to that end, consistent with the time available for the purpose, was made but there were instances where inability to locate, indifference or other reason has made it impossible to accomplish the desired result. This is essentially a memorial volume devoted principally to the records of the service men. Other features have been introduced but civilian war activities have necessarily been subordinated that the limitations of a single volume might be adequate and the cost of production not rendered prohibitive. In compilation we have had valuable assistance from many individuals, all of which is gratefully acknowledged. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the centennial of the First World War rapidly approaching, historian and bibliographer James T. Controvich offers in The United States in World War I: A Bibliographic Guide the most comprehensive, up-to-date reference bibliography yet published. Organized by subject, this bibliography includes the full range of sources: vintage publications of the time, books, pamphlets, periodical titles, theses, dissertations, and archival sources held by federal and state organizations, as well as those in public and private hands, including historical societies and museums. As Controvich’s bibliographic accounting makes clear, there were many facets of World War I that remain virtually unknown to this day. Throughout, Controvich’s bibliography tracks the primary sources that tell each of these stories—and many others besides—during this tense period in American history. Each entry lists the author, title, place of publication, publisher, date of publication, and page count as well as descriptive information concerning illustrations, plates, ports, maps, diagrams, and plans. The armed forces section carries additional information on rosters, awards, citations, and killed and wounded in action lists. The United States in World War I: A Bibliographic Guide is an ideal research tool for students and scholars of World War I and American history.

Laplander has become the benchmark work against which all things Lost Battalion related have been measured. Now, in this updated 3rd edition released to coincide with the centennial of America's entry into WW1, Mr. Laplander again takes us to the Charlevaux Ravine to delve deeper into the story than ever before! Meticulously chronicling what would become arguably the most famous event of America's part in the war, we find the truths behind the legend. Spanning twenty years of research and hundreds of sources (most never before seen), the reader is led through the Argonne Forest during September and October, 1918 virtually hour by hour. The result is the single most factual accounting of the Lost Battalion story and their leader, Charles W. Whittlesey, to date. Told in an entertaining, fast moving style, the book has become a favorite the world over! With new Forward by Major-General William Terpeluk, US Army (Ret).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On the streets of Paris one day in July 1918, an American doughboy, Sgt. Jimmy Donovan, befriended a stray dog that he named Rags. No longer an unwanted street mutt, Rags became the mascot to the entire First Division of the American Expeditionary Force and a friend to the American troops who had crossed the Atlantic to fight. Rags was more than a scruffy face and a wagging tail, however. The little terrier mix was with the division at the crucial battle of Soissons, at the Saint-Mihiel offensive, and finally in the blood-and-mud bath of the Meuse-Argonne, during which he and his guardian were wounded. Despite being surrounded by distraction and danger, Rags learned to carry messages through gunfire, locate broken communications wire for the Signal Corps to repair, and alert soldiers to incoming shells, saving the lives of hundreds of American soldiers. Through it all, he brought inspiration to men with little to hope for, especially in the bitter last days of the war. From Stray Dog to World War I Hero covers Rags’s entire life story, from the bomb-filled years of war through his secret journey to the United States that began his second life, one just as filled with drama and heartache. In years of peace, Rags served as a reminder to human survivors of what held men together when pushed past their limits by the horrors of battle. Watch a book trailer.

Book excerpt: Montana's cowboys, miners, foresters, farmers and nurses entered World War I in April 1917 under the battle cry that would resonate on the battlefields in France--"Powder River, Let 'Er Buck!" Montana men served in a greater percentage per capita than any other state. Hundreds responded to the call, including local women and minorities, from the nation's first congresswoman, Jeannette Rankin, to young women serving as combat nurses on the front lines. Additionally, the state provided vital supplies of copper and wheat. Learn what role celebrities like "cowboy artist" Charlie Russell played in the war and how Montanans mobilized, trained and deployed. Acclaimed historian Ken Robison uncovers new and neglected stories of the Treasure State's contributions to the Great War.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "World War I continued with fury in the spring of 1918 as American Yanks endeavored to play the key role in stemming the German tide. Montana's Marines suffered the bloodiest day in their history as they became "Devil Dogs," charging through hell on earth at Belleau Wood. Locals in the Wild West Division stormed "over the top" into the Argonne Forest, while nurses, "hello girls," Navy Yeomanettes and YMCA workers blazed new gender roles. And young Seaman Mike Mansfield, future legendary senator, served on convoy duty against lurking German U-boats. Award-winning historian Ken Robison illuminates the story of young and vibrant Montanans of all ethnicities as they fought for elusive democracy, at home and abroad, in this world war to end all wars."--
