Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the third edition of an established and leading book on family law in Nigeria. Since the last edition in 1990 significant judicial and statutory enactments have taken place in the area of study. The new edition incorporates these changes and explains their implications. The chapters have been comprehensively re-written to reflect the changes in the law and to update all relevant information including the Same Sex Bill and the Nigerian Law Reform Commissions draft Marriage Act. New chapters have been included on domestic violence and widowhood respectively to reflect the continuing developments in Nigerian family law. The new Child's Right Act of 2003 and the similar state legislations have been analysed in the three new chapters. The non-customary law rules in the intestate succession have been extensively recast to reflect the provisions of the Marriage act as contained in the Lawa of the Federation of Nigeria 2004. This edition has devoted considerable attention to the applicable customary laws on the family and provides extensive treatment of Islamic Law Rules and their interpretations and application by the superior court. Familu law in Nigeria presents a fresh view not only on the applicable rules on Nigerian family law but also suggest new directions and underlines the socio-economic implications.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: American Culture and the Nigerian Society by Innocent Emechete Visit the Order Page Description About the book: An experiential observation of behavioral problems in some American and Nigerian children by the author sparks off this inquiry. Thus "American Culture and the Nigerian Society", an investigation into whether America has influenced other countries like Nigeria and to what extent, is born. It starts by looking at the word culture which makes a people unique and the cultural ramifications within and outside America. The author researches into whether or not these American influences are for better or for worse in the recipient countries. Incidentally Nigeria and the United States have something in common: both were once British Colonies; Nigeria for two months shy of forty seven years (Jan.1, 1914 to Oct. 1, 1960) and America for one hundred and twenty four years (1651-1775). The author finds out that technological advancements have made it possible for American culture to take root in other countries like Nigeria. There are cultural exchanges in goods and services; the good, the bad, and the ugly are also exchanged: crime and drug culture, and sexual revolutions of the sixties are no exceptions. In Churches there are religious cultural exchanges too. Through televangelism American religious views spread through many countries like Nigeria. The sense of the sacred disappears within a few decades. The author discovers too that the Church loses its moral fiber and its moral high ground by the day and replaces them with money, the 'almighty' dollar. The congregation in the pews is desensitized by losing a big chunk of the sense of humanity and feeling. Killing innocent lives becomes a common place activity that does no longer raise eyebrows. Moral decadence sets in because there is nothing sacred and no more sanctity of life in the very young and the very old. The lawmakers, being part of the congregation in the pews across America, almost resoundingly say 'amen' to the foregoing. After all they make the laws, which the Presidents sign. The third branch of Government, the courts, register their consent through activist Judges. Then things completely fall apart. Who are the victims in all this? Our children! Since children do not stay passive, they become negatively active. We see it school shootings, students cutting school or classes, drug activities, bank robberies, and other deviant behaviors that land about two million of our children in prison. The author has some suggestions that can rescue our children from this downward trend if 'all hands are on deck'. As in America so it is in satellite countries associated with America. The author focuses on Nigeria in particular and makes some recommendations to help Nigerian children to fight with the giant and not be crushed unto death. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, scholarly interest in love has flourished. Historians have addressed the rise of romantic love and marriage in Europe and the United States, while anthropologists have explored the ways globalization has reshaped local ideas about those same topics. Yet, love in Africa has been peculiarly ignored, resulting in a serious lack of understanding about this vital element of social life—a glaring omission given the intense focus on sexuality in Africa in the wake of HIV/AIDS. Love in Africa seeks both to understand this failure to consider love and to begin to correct it. In a substantive introduction and eight essays that examine a variety of countries and range in time from the 1930s to the present, the contributors collectively argue for the importance of paying attention to the many different cultural and historical strands that constitute love in Africa. Covering such diverse topics as the reception of Bollywood movies in 1950s Zanzibar, the effects of a Mexican telenovela on young people’s ideas about courtship in Niger, the models of romance promoted by South African and Kenyan magazines, and the complex relationship between love and money in Madagascar and South Africa, Love in Africa is a vivid and compelling look at love’s role in African society.

Book excerpt: This book is a comprehensive analysis of the structure, determinants and consequences of changes in sub-Saharan African families, thereby representing an Afrocentric description of the emerging trends. It documents various themes in the sub-disciplines of family demography. The first section of the book focuses on philosophical understanding of African family, its theoretical perspectives, and comparative analysis of family in the 20th and 21st centuries. The second section covers family formation, union dissolution, emerging trend in single parenthood, and adolescents in the family. The following section describes types, determinants and consequences of African family changes: health, childbearing, youth development, teen pregnancy and family violence and the last chapter provides systematic evidence on existing laws and policies governing African family structure and dynamics. As such it illustrates the importance of family demography in African demographic discourse and will be an interesting read to scholars and students in the field of demography, social workers, policy makers, departments of Social Development in countries in Africa and relevant international agencies and all those interested in understanding the African family trajectory.
