Book excerpt: The potential of civil society in interfacing with the government for ensuring good governance has gained currency in academic and policy debates in the recent times. This becomes particularly relevant in an old democracy like India where the State has not been able to meet the need for basic things. However, the State provides space and freedom for people to engage in collective action, to critically evaluate the State’s policies and demand a revision in policy for effective implementation of the laws that are elaborately codified in the Constitution and also to improve the functioning of its institutions. This book studies the level of participation of tribal communities in the new Panchayat Raj dispensation introduced in Andhra Pradesh since the PESA Act. It specifically analyses how much the community has achieved or benefited after the introduction of Panchayat Raj. The objective is to determine how the power structures of tribal communities have been influenced by the socio-political changes and institutional innovations, like the extension of representative democracy at the grassroots level; what kind of changes have taken place in the study area with the institutionalization of Panchayats; and the politicization of the tribal people by the different parties. This book also throws light on the role of civil society actors in influencing governance positively as well as the limitations that have inhibited the impact of their influence. The empirical research highlights that the institution of Gram Sabha has been instrumental in bringing transparency and accountability in the working of local bodies. The author has rightly emphasized the need for an attitudinal change both in the political and administrative machinery at State, district and village level. The inter-relationship of the three Ds, i.e. Democracy, Decentralisation and Development, has been brought out beautifully with the support of field study. While the 73rd amendment and PESA Act of the Constitution has mandated the democratization of local self-governments, the process of decentralisation is yet to take concrete shape through real devolution from Lok Sabha to Gram Sabha.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book uses empirical data to articulate the issues of the Indian tribal economy in general and the role of minor forest produce in the tribal economy in particular. It throws new light on hitherto under-researched areas, especially those related to the significance of minor forest produce. This book is primarily based on the functioning of the tribal economy and draws on the experience gained by the author during his sojourn as a research scholar working the debt of tribal farmers and the technological gap in tribal agriculture. Empirical evidence is given in the present book to explore the validity of the earlier hypotheses in respect of the contribution of minor forest produce to the total income of the tribal households. Furthermore, a statistical analysis is undertaken to ascertain the relative contribution of each forest product to the augmentation of tribal earnings. The empirical work in this book also corroborates the theories of dependency between the forest and the tribals.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: According to the 2011 census, the population of ‘Kathodi’ tribe is 13,632 people. People of this tribe mostly live in Surat, Tapi, Dang, Narmada and Sabarkantha districts. They use herbs, fruits and roots as food. They hunt rabbits, deer, cocks and birds and use them for food. They were engaged in the profession of collecting catechu from its trees, so the tribe is known as ‘Kathodi’ tribe. In this modern time, machinery and factories are established to prepare catechu, so the old profession of preparing catechu by this tribe is stopped. Nowadays, people of this tribe have started farming works andWork of collecting forest products. To uplift the people of this tribe, various departments have tried by providing opportunities of self-employment and home industries. Literacy rate of this tribe is 23.54%. Irrespective of the influence of modernisation, urbanisation, industrialization and overall development in tribal areas there are still certain communities which are extremely backward. such tribal communities have been identified as primitive tribes. Kathodi is one of them.. This study belongs to Kathodi tribes. Such studies are very rare in Gujarat state.. The present research study is exploring nature study of the living conditions and social-economical positions of Kathodi tribes as an especially primitive community in Vijaynagar Taluka in Sabarkantha district which is located in Gujarat state. The study systematically presents the impacts of development schemes on the socio-economic conditions of Kathodi. It also throws adequate light on the problems associated with schemes both at the level of beneficiaries as well as at the promoters level too. . .

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is concerned with how people respond to unpredictable variation in environmental and economic conditions (risk) and lack of information (uncertainty) about those risks. The papers focus on tribal and peasant societies. These societies lack many of the formal institutions that we, in the industrialized West, rely on to buffer us against unpredictable resource fluctuations. As the papers in this volume show, people in these societies are directly and profoundly affected by such risks. The contributors to this volume are primarily ecological and economic anthropologists who have in common a familiarity with both the formal theory of behavioral ecology and/or economics and the anthropological literature on tribal and peasant societies.
