Book excerpt: Essay from the year 2019 in the subject Business economics - Miscellaneous, grade: A, Atlantic International University, language: English, abstract: A desire to purchase goods and services is fostered by marketers. Marketers can incorporate manipulation tactics into their efforts to create mass product appeal, effectively controlling consumer behavior. This practice, however, is not permitted as per the American Marketing Association’s Statement of Ethics. This ethics statement incorporates the principles of maleficence and honesty as core components of ethical norms and values, respectively. These ethical principles are congruent with the technological capabilities that serve as the foundation of the digital era, as the digital era results in increased transparency. This transparency ultimately leads some corporations to adjust their marketing approaches, which others may or may not implement different forms of consumer manipulation.

In Brandwashed, he turns the spotlight on his own industry, drawing on all he has witnessed behind closed doors, exposing for the first time the full extent of the psychological tricks and traps that companies devise to win our hard-earned money. Lindstrom reveals eye opening details such as how advertisers and marketers target children at an alarmingly young age (starting when they are still in the womb), what heterosexual men really think about when they see sexually provocative advertising, how marketers and retailers stoke the flames of public panic and capitalize on paranoia over diseases, extreme weather events, and food contamination scares. It also presents the first ever evidence to prove how addicted we are to our smartphones, and how certain companies (like the maker of a very popular lip balm), purposely adjust their formulas in order to make their products chemically addictive, and much, much more. Brandwashed is a shocking insider's look at how today's global giants conspire to obscure the truth and manipulate our minds, all in service of persuading us to buy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Are we being manipulated online? If so, is being manipulated by online technologies and algorithmic systems notably different from human forms of manipulation? And what is under threat exactly when people are manipulated online? This volume provides philosophical and conceptual depth to debates in digital ethics about online manipulation. The contributions explore the ramifications of our increasingly consequential interactions with online technologies such as online recommender systems, social media, user friendly design, microtargeting, default settings, gamification, and real time profiling. The authors in this volume address four broad and interconnected themes: What is the conceptual nature of online manipulation? And how, methodologically, should the concept be defined? Does online manipulation threaten autonomy, freedom, and meaning in life and if so, how? What are the epistemic, affective, and political harms and risks associated with online manipulation? What are legal and regulatory perspectives on online manipulation? This volume brings these various considerations together to offer philosophically robust answers to critical questions concerning our online interactions with one another and with autonomous systems. The Philosophy of Online Manipulation will be of interest to researchers and advanced students working in moral philosophy, digital ethics, philosophy of technology, and the ethics of manipulation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are many ways to handle manipulation by individuals, a group, or government. Firstly, we need to recognise and understand a manipulative act, how it works, its motives, and why we, in particular, are its victims. To this end, the author seeks to illuminate "Human Manipulation" at all levels. This analysis provides the reader with a detailed definition, an understanding of the history and morality of human manipulation and an insight into the psychology of the manipulator and victim. The book identifies and examines 450 manipulative techniques in detail and explains what a victim can do to recognise, avoid and counteract them. Manipulation generally relies on human ignorance. So the better informed we are, the better our chances of detecting and managing manipulation when it is directed at us. This handbook is probably the most comprehensive study of human manipulation anywhere. It is a "must have" for any serious student of the subject.

Book excerpt: For the first time since the collapse of socialism, a real alternative to capitalism is here. Other than the plethora of modifications to capitalism, “optimalism” is potentially the political, social, and economic system of the future. As a new field, it advocates overhauls on everything from world order to trade and finance, which it identified as being at the root of capitalism’s flaws that continued to cause inequity, resource mismanagement, ecological destruction, and conflicts with its profit maximization mantra. One of the most important lessons that accident civilizations have left behind is the importance of being prepared for the unknown future and cataclysm events. Despite the fact that the future is unknown, one thing is for sure: "winter" will come, whether in the form of war, a climate disaster, a pandemic, or any other form of cataclysm event that will overwhelm our civilization and threaten to sweep us off the planet. Ancient life forms and civilizations of great proportions have either vanished completely or have been reset to zero due to their unpreparedness, neglect, or lack of information. The Sumerians are ideal examples, having left us behind compelling evidence of a lost civilization some 4000 years ago. Although the decline of the Sumerian civilization was a complex process that involved various factors, environmental changes, resource depletion, political instability, and wars are believed to be the main causes of its demise. One significant factor might have been the gradual dryness of the region due to changes in the climate and overutilization of the land, which might have led to droughts, crop failures, and food shortages. This, in turn, contributed to social and economic problems, including conflict over resources, inequality, and poverty. The story in the first book of the Bible about the hunger that Joseph helped foresee and prepare Egypt for in the years ahead is a stereotype story of what has happened in human history and, more importantly, a reminder of what will happen to us sooner or later. The question is: is humanity prepared for a cataclysmic event of global proportion that could come at any time? Are we prepared in the best possible ways? The simple answer is: no, we haven’t done as much as we could and should. One of the reasons for this is the fact that the world is divided and could not consolidate its efforts as much or as urgently as it should. The problem is basically a collective problem and needs a similar approach. What makes the situation even worse, though, is the greater likelihood of the occurrence of human-triggered disasters than it would otherwise be. Despite the magnitude of intellect and level of progress available to humanity, man looks dazed compared to ants, who prepare effectively for their winter. Paradoxically, the same system of capitalism that brought us to where we are is turning into the main cause of our own destruction. The worst part of it, though, is that we are sozzled in it and seem incapable of escaping the doom that our long-standing friend is leading us to. This groundbreaking book of its kind opens up a whole new field of inquiry that questions some of the conventional wisdoms known to us in an effort to consolidate the efforts that are being made by individuals, governments, academia, and businesses and promote a comprehensive planetary perspective to civilization in a quest for the common good for humanity and nature. Take a look at the critical present and possible future right now and join the conversation.
