Book Synopsis Elasmobranch Biodiversity, Conservation and Management by : Sarah L. Fowler
Download or read book Elasmobranch Biodiversity, Conservation and Management written by Sarah L. Fowler and published by IUCN. This book was released on 2002 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Darwin Elasmobranch Biodiversity Conservation and Management project in Sabah held a three-day international seminar that included a one-day workshop in order to highlight freshwater and coastal elasmobranch conservation issues in the region and worldwide, to disseminate the result of the project to other Malaysian states and countries, and to raise awareness of the importance of considering aspects of elasmobranch biodiversity in the context of nature conservation, commercial fisheries management, and for subsistence fishing communities. These proceedings contain numerous peer-reviewed papers originally presented at the seminar, which cover a wide range of topics, with particular reference to species from freshwater and estuarine habitats. The workshop served to develop recommendations concerning the future prospects of elasmobranch fisheries, biodiversity, conservation and management. This paper records those conclusions, which highlight the importance of elasmobranchs as top marine predators and keystone species, noting that permanent damage to shark and ray populations are likely to have serious and unexpected negative consequences for commercial and subsistence yields of other important fish stocks.

Book Synopsis Understanding food security, incomes and livelihoods in a changing shark and ray fisheries sector in Sri Lanka by : Food and Agriculture Organization
Download or read book Understanding food security, incomes and livelihoods in a changing shark and ray fisheries sector in Sri Lanka written by Food and Agriculture Organization and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2019-08-06 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the entering into effect of new CITES listings for seven shark and ray species in 2014 (decided at COP16, Bangkok, 2013), FAO ran interviews with a range of shark fisheries actors to determine the impacts of governance changes in, and on, these fisheries. These interviews were conducted in collaboration with Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources of Sri Lanka and revealed the successes and failures in the communication of the new governance measures, which affected fishing and trade, and their impacts on food security and livelihoods. This report collates information on these impacts, as a result of a range of fisheries controls and new CITES provisions, and evaluates the effectiveness of these revised governance measures. The results offer useful insights for fisheries managers in Sri Lanka and beyond, as well as CITES (both its Secretariat and Parties), which will help guide the delivery of future investment supporting the management and conservation of threatened, commercially exploited marine species.
Book Synopsis In the Name of Sharks by : François Sarano
Download or read book In the Name of Sharks written by François Sarano and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2023-10-17 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Twenty metres below water, the oceanographer François Sarano came face to face with a five-and-a-half metre great white shark. Seduced by the gentle elegance of this majestic creature, Sarano experienced a profound sense of affinity with her as they swam side by side, shoulder to shoulder, eye to eye, cutting a single figure through the ocean depths. It was an experience which made him realize the depth of our ignorance of the lives of sharks, leading him to become a passionate advocate for their protection. Drawing on the latest scientific research on the biology and ethology of sharks and their exceptional characteristics, this book aims to break through the barrier of prejudice and to pay homage to their true nature. Representing a last vestige of wildness, their populations are nevertheless under threat – like so many species, they have been hunted and exploited by humans. Sarano argues for a change of mindset in which we lose ourselves in the world of the other, so that each living entity, human and non-human, can take their rightful place in the broader global ecosystem.
Book Synopsis Whale Sharks by : Alistair D.M. Dove
Download or read book Whale Sharks written by Alistair D.M. Dove and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2021-08-25 with total page 442 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Whale sharks are the largest of all fishes, fascinating for comparative studies of all manner of biological fields, including functional anatomy, growth, metabolism, movement ecology, behavior and physiology. These gentle ocean giants have captured the interest of scientists and the imagination of the public, yet their future is uncertain. The conservation status of whale sharks was upgraded to Endangered on the IUCN Red List and the species faces a range of intense threats from human activities. Can these iconic living animals, who have survived for millions of years, survive us? Written by the world’s leading experts in whale shark biology, ecology, and conservation, Whale Sharks: Biology, Ecology and Conservation is the first definitive volume about the world's biggest fish. Chapters include discussions of satellite-linked tags, used to track whale shark movements; genetic sequencing, to examine evolutionary adaptations; even the use of underwater ultrasound units to investigate the species’ reproduction. The editors hope that by collating what is known, they can make it easier for future researchers, conservationists, and resource managers to fill some of the remaining knowledge gaps, and provide the information they need to join the team. As you work your way through this book, we hope that you will develop a sense of awe and marvel at all of our good fortune to share the ocean, and the planet, with this utterly extraordinary species.
Download or read book Sharkonomics written by Stefan Engeseth and published by Marshall Cavendish. This book was released on 2012 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nature is much smarter than the likes of Stanford, Harvard, MIT, McKinsey, Boston Consulting Group, Bain, IBM, Apple and all of the other Fortune 500 companies. In nature, sharks have to move to survive. But in business most market leaders do not, because they are stuck in history--and eventually become shark food. Sharks don't perform by producing endless Power Points; they bite into market share. Sharkonomics will reveal how the logos of market leaders will have more bites taken out of them than a seal after a shark picnic. This book is inspired by Mother Nature's sharks which have been around for more than 420 million years and completed numerous strategic moves. It will prepare you to jump into the water and attack the market. Economic competition is increasing rapidly and reduced resources will increase that further. Economist Joseph Schumpeter (1883-1950) came up with the term "creative destruction" to demonstrate why companies need to innovate constantly in order to survive. In my opinion Schumpeter was converting the saying "eat or be eaten" into economic terms. Sharkonomics is a further enhancement of this: "read this book and take a bite". Sharkonomics will reveal where and how to attack companies such as Apple, through some of the enormous blind spots they are unaware of and through mistakes in their defence strategies.
