Book Synopsis Market Power in the Nordic Electricity Wholesale Market by : Sven-Olof Fridolfsson
Download or read book Market Power in the Nordic Electricity Wholesale Market written by Sven-Olof Fridolfsson and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We review the recent empirical research concerning market power on the Nordic wholesale market for electricity, Nord Pool. There is no evidence of blatant and systematic exploitation of system level market power on Nord Pool. However, generation companies seem from time to time able to take advantage of capacity constraints in transmission to wield regional market power. Market power can manifest itself in a number of ways which have so far escaped empirical scrutiny. We discuss investment incentives, vertical integration and buyer power, as well as withholding of base-load (nuclear) capacity.
Book Synopsis Cournot Competition in Wholesale Electricity Markets by : Erik Lundin
Download or read book Cournot Competition in Wholesale Electricity Markets written by Erik Lundin and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 27 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Horizontal shifts in bid curves observed in wholesale electricity markets are consistent with Cournot competition. Quantity competition reduces the informational requirements associated with evaluating market performance because the markups of all producers then depend on the same inverse residual demand curve instead of one for each firm. We apply the model to the day-ahead market of the Nordic power exchange, Nord Pool, for the years 2011-2013. Results suggest that mark-ups were 8-11 percent. We find some support for the hypothesis that the division of Sweden into price areas in 2011 increased the exercise of market power.
Book Synopsis Real-Time Versus Day-Ahead Market Power in a Hydro-Based Electricity Market by : Thomas Tangerås
Download or read book Real-Time Versus Day-Ahead Market Power in a Hydro-Based Electricity Market written by Thomas Tangerås and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper develops a theoretical framework to analyze the link between real-time and day-ahead competition in a hydro-based wholesale electricity market. Predictions of the model are tested on a detailed data set of trades and prices from the Nordic power exchange, Nord Pool. We study market performance before and after a reform that increased the number of price areas (local markets) in Sweden, and reject the hypothesis of perfect competition in some of the Swedish price areas. Our results suggest that firms exercised some local market power during the sample period.
Book Synopsis Capacity Withdrawals in the Electricity Wholesale Market by : Panagiotis Tsangaris
Download or read book Capacity Withdrawals in the Electricity Wholesale Market written by Panagiotis Tsangaris and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-08-30 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the issue of capacity withdrawals in the electricity wholesale market. Electricity generators can exercise market power in the wholesale market either by withdrawing generation capacity, or by pricing above competitive levels in order to achieve a higher market price and, thereby, increase revenues. After a comprehensive explanation of capacity withdrawal practices and the issues that arise when proceeding under competition law, the book analyses whether an increased state of transparency, as provided for in the REMIT and Regulation 543/2013, could facilitate the efficient functioning of electricity wholesale markets and the investigation of capacity withdrawal practices. It also examines the effect of the prohibition of market manipulation as prescribed in the REMIT in dealing with abusive capacity withdrawals in the electricity wholesale market.

Book Synopsis The Relevance of Wholesale Electricity Market Places by : Petr Spodniak
Download or read book The Relevance of Wholesale Electricity Market Places written by Petr Spodniak and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Electricity wholesale markets are undergoing rapid transformation due to the increasing share of distributed and variable renewable energy sources (vRES) penetrating the market. The increasing shares of stochastic wind generation bring along greater deviations between the real time power generation and the day-ahead forecasts of power supply. It is therefore reasonable to assume that trading activity is shifting more from the traditionally dominant day-ahead market into the intra-day and regulating power markets. This is because predicting vRES power generation closer to the actual delivery is more reliable and because power generators are motivated to avoid high imbalance costs. We study price spreads between day-ahead, intra-day and regulating power markets in three Nordic countries (Denmark, Sweden and Finland) during 2013-2017. We estimate vector autoregressive (VAR) models to study the interrelationships between the price spreads and the effects of wind forecast and demand forecast errors, and other exogenous variables, such as transmission congestions, and hydrological conditions, on price spreads in different Nord Pool bidding areas. We use the variation in the shares of wind power between bidding areas to analyse the impacts of increased shares of wind power on different market places. We find that wind forecast errors do affect price spreads in areas with large shares of wind power generation. Moreover, demand forecast errors have an impact on almost all price spreads, except in areas with relatively low consumption. Our results indicate that increasing shares of wind power are, indeed, changing the relevance of different market places. Markets closer to real time are playing more important role than in the past.

Book Synopsis Capacity adequacy in the Nordic electricity market by : Nordic Council of Ministers
Download or read book Capacity adequacy in the Nordic electricity market written by Nordic Council of Ministers and published by Nordic Council of Ministers. This book was released on 2015-08-26 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An increasing share of intermittent renewable generation and reduced profitability of conventional power generation has led to a growing concern for capacity adequacy in the Nordic electricity market (Nord Pool market area). It does not make sense to assess capacity adequacy for each country separately in the Nord Pool market area as it is highly integrated in terms of both interconnector capacity and market integration. Capacity challenges are rarely isolated to one country or bidding zone. This report analyses what market solutions may be used to manage capacity adequacy in the Nord Pool market area, and how an efficient transition to adequate market solutions could be achieved. The main analysis reveals several measures that would strengthen price formation and cost recovery in the Nord Pool market area, although in general, the market is already highly liquid and well-functioning.
Book Synopsis Electricity Market Reform by : Fereidoon Sioshansi
Download or read book Electricity Market Reform written by Fereidoon Sioshansi and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2006-04-13 with total page 687 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the late 1980s, policy makers and regulators in a number of countries have liberalized, restructured or “deregulated their electric power sector, typically by introducing competition at the generation and retail level. These experiments have resulted in vastly different outcomes - some highly encouraging, others utterly disastrous. However, many countries continue along the same path for a variety of reasons. Electricity Market Reform examines the most important competitive electricity markets around the world and provides definitive answers as to why some markets have performed admirably, while others have utterly failed, often with dire financial and cost consequences. The lessons contained within are direct relevance to regulators, policy makers, the investment community, industry, academics and graduate students of electricity markets worldwide. Covers electicity market liberalization and deregulation on a worldwide scale Features expert contributions from key people within the electricity sector
This book was released on 2014 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We analyse in a theoretical framework the link between real-time and day-ahead market performance in a hydro-based and imperfectly competitive wholesale electricity market. Theoretical predictions of the model are tested on data from the Nordic power exchange, Nord Pool Spot (NPS). We reject the hypothesis that prices at NPS were at their competitive levels throughout the period under examination. The empirical approach uses equilibrium prices and quantities and does not rely on bid data nor on estimation of demand or marginal cost functions.
Book Synopsis Regional Electricity Market Design (Regional Electricity Market Design) by : Lindboe, Hans Henrik
Download or read book Regional Electricity Market Design (Regional Electricity Market Design) written by Lindboe, Hans Henrik and published by Nordic Council of Ministers. This book was released on 2016-10-24 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Do current electricity market designs ensure a sufficient electricity supply at all times? This topic is currently the subject of intense debate across Europe, and several major countries such as Germany, the UK, France and Italy have decided that additional measures – so-called capacity remuneration mechanisms - are needed to supplement current market designs. This report describes and analyses the advantages and disadvantages of a range of measures proposed or currently implemented across Europe, and includes both best estimates of how the implementation of these measures will impact Nordic electricity prices as well as recommendations to the Nordic countries regarding a cost-efficient path to ensuring the Nordic security of supply.
Book Synopsis Lessons from Liberalised Electricity Markets by : International Energy Agency
Download or read book Lessons from Liberalised Electricity Markets written by International Energy Agency and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "After a decade or more of experiences in reforming electricity markets in several pioneer regions, some important lessons can now be drawn. This book gives an assessment of these developments, focusing on the issues that are critical for successful electricity market liberalization. One lesson is that it is a long process which requires strong on-going government involvement and commitment. Experiences and examples in the study are mainly drawn from the UK, Australian, Nordic and North Eastern United States (the PJM interconnection) markets, which have all operated with considerable success for a number of years. They have improved efficiency without jeopardizing system security. These markets are described in greater detail in annexes of the book but the main analysis focuses on key issues rather than on specific countries and regions or specific market models. The study explores different solutions used in those relatively robust markets and the remaining challenges."--Publisher description.

Book Synopsis Understanding Competitive Pricing and Market Power in Wholesale Electricity Markets by : Severin Borenstein
Download or read book Understanding Competitive Pricing and Market Power in Wholesale Electricity Markets written by Severin Borenstein and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Discussions of competition in restructured electricity markets have revealed many misunderstandings about the definition, diagnosis, and implications of market power. In this paper, I attempt to clarify the meaning of market power and show how it can be distinguished from competitive pricing in markets with significant short-run supply constraints. I also address two common myths about market power: (a) that it is present in all markets and (b) that it must be present in order for firms to remain profitable in markets with significant fixed costs. I conclude by arguing that, while a finding of market power in an industry does not necessarily indicate that government intervention is warranted, such analysis is an important part of creating sound public policy.
