Book excerpt: This report assesses short and long term market trends for the non-electric applications of nuclear energy up to the year 2020 and for the period 2020-2050. It focuses on the following applications: district heating, desalination (of sea, brackish and waste water), industrial heat supply, ship propulsion and the energy supply for spacecraft; with the emphasis placed on economic and other factors that may promote or hinder the growth of these markets. The book is structured by demand categories rather than possible reactor types; and each section considers a specific non-electric application in terms of its market size, the prospects for nuclear technologies and the economic competitiveness of the technologies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: E. L. Zebroski During the 1970s, there was rapid growth of a philosophy that assumes that deindustrialization will result in an Elysian postindustrial society. This view is generally antitechnology; commonly in opposition to large-scale energy sources; and often supportive of high-cost, speculative, or at most, small-scale energy sources. The social and economic costs of policies which would lead to dein dustrialization are ignored or considered to be irrelevant. The development of civilian nuclear energy as a by-product of wartime developments also brings with it an association with the fear of nuclear weapons and with the repugnance for war in general. Many of these views and associations mingle to provide significant political constituencies. These have had consid erable impact on party platforms and elections. Also, another important aspect is the conservation viewpoint. This view--correctly--concerns the fact that in definite increase in per capita energy consumption, coupled with increasing U.S. and world populations, must at some point be restrained by limits on resources as well as by limits arising from environmental effects. All of these concerns have been subject to voluminous analysis, publications, and public discussion. They underlie one of the dominant social movements of the 1970s and 1980s. Indefinite exponential growth of energy production is neither possible nor de sirable.

Book excerpt: Transitional Energy Policy 1980-2030: Alternative Nuclear Technologies discusses topics the tackle concerns regarding the use of nuclear technology as an energy source. The book explains issues such as the reservations regarding the use of nuclear, energy resource supply/demand problems, and controversial concepts. The text is comprised of seven chapters; each tackles a different area of concern. Chapter I discusses the trends, logistic curves, economic cycles, and predictions of energy growth, while Chapter II covers the perils of paucity of fossil fuels. Chapter III deals with nuclear energy directions, and Chapters IV and V discuss the strategies used in pursuit of nuclear technology evolution. The sixth chapter tackles institutions and commercialization of nuclear technologies from a historical perspective, while the seventh chapter covers possible patterns. The book will be of great interest to readers concerned with the development of nuclear technology as an energy source.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Global energy demand is likely to rise substantially by the mid-21st century. At the same time, the use of fossil fuels may need to be severely curtailed to reduce the emission of greenhouse gases. Nuclear power is one of the few options that meet these conflicting requirements. However, its potential to do so is an issue of wide disagreement and high emotions, with balanced information hard to find. This text, the culmination of a two-year study, provides a dispassionate and objective assessment of the major disputes on the future role of this controversial fuel. Decisionmakers and their advisers, as well as proponents and opponents of the fuel, should find that this book provides clarification of the main issues influencing the future of nuclear energy: relative economics, public perceptions and the process of decisionmaking, nuclear research and development, waste management, reprocessing and proliferation, nuclear safety and nuclear power and the Kyoto Protocol. In the light of the many uncertainties in the field of energy, the relevance of these issues can only continue to grow.

Book excerpt: During the last decade, nuclear power has in many countries been 'the energy source that dares not speak its name'. It is now back on the agenda, but the debate remains highly emotive, and dispassionate information is difficult to find. This book, the culmination of a two-year study, provides an assessment of the major disputes surrounding the future role of this fuel. The issues covered include economics, nuclear safety, public perceptions and the process of decision-making, nuclear research and development, the sustainability of nuclear power in the context of the Kyoto Protocol, waste management, reprocessing and proliferation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Clean Energy Minsterial's CEM "Nuclear Innovation: Clean Energy Future" (NICE Future) initiative envisions a world in which nuclear energy innovation and uses advance clean energy goals. The NICE Future initiative recognizes that there is no one-size-fits-all solution to energy and fosters collaboration among clean energy supporters in exploring diverse solutions, including nuclear energy technology solutions, for clean and integrated systems of the future. Under NICE Future initiative, Research Impacts on Social Equity and Economic Empowerment (RISE3) campaign is building a first-ever partnership amongst governments and the nuclear energy, renewables, nonprofit and academic communities to accelerate the adoption of environmentally just clean energy solutions. Leveraging the insights and expertise of more than thirty participant countries and partner organizations, RISE3 aims to highlight breakthrough solutions that can accelerate movement toward net-zero. RISE3 convenes expert resources, supporting analyses to inform investment decisions and creating a blueprint for countries transitioning to a clean and just energy economy with nuclear innovation as a key pillar. The RISE3D case series e-publication has been developed from submissions by participating countries and partner organizations, demonstrating how advanced and innovative nuclear energy technologies, such as small modular reactors, will support the clean energy transition in a variety of community contexts.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The world-renowned antinuclear activist's expertly argued(The Guardian) case against nuclear energy. In a world torn apart by wars over oil, politicians have increasingly begun to look for alternative energy sources and their leading choice is nuclear energy. Among the myths that have been spread over the years about nuclear-powered electricity are that it does not cause global warming or pollution, that it is inexpensive, and that it is safe. Helen Caldicott's look at the actual costs and environmental consequences of nuclear energy belies the incessant barrage of nuclear industry propaganda. Caldicott reveals truths, Martin Sheen has said, that confirm we must take positive action now if we are to make a difference. In fact, nuclear power contributes to global warming; the true cost of nuclear power is prohibitive, with taxpayers picking up most of the tab; there's simply not enough uranium in the world to sustain nuclear power over the long term; and the potential for a catastrophic accident or a terrorist attack far outweighs any benefits. Concluding chapters detail alternative sustainable energy sources that are the key to a clean, green future.

Nuclear cogeneration could be considered as an option in light of actions on climate change. However, nuclear cogeneration is not widely deployed. This publication provides a quick introduction to the advantages, experience, and future planning for implementation of nuclear cogeneration. It also highlights some demonstration projects that were developed in the past in connection with industries, describing technical concepts for combined nuclear-industrial complexes. The publication is intended to be of interest to users in academia and industry as well as government agencies and public institutions requiring basic information on various aspects of using nuclear power for cogeneration.
