Book Synopsis Discourse Structuring Markers in English by : Elizabeth Closs Traugott
Download or read book Discourse Structuring Markers in English written by Elizabeth Closs Traugott and published by John Benjamins Publishing Company. This book was released on 2022-03-15 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a contribution to the growing field of diachronic construction grammar. Focus is on corpus evidence for the importance of including conventionalized pragmatics within construction grammar and suggestions for how to do so. The empirical domain is the development of Discourse Structuring Markers in English such as after all, also, all the same, by the way, further and moreover (also known as Discourse Markers). The term Discourse Structuring Markers highlights their use not only to connect discourse segments but also to shape discourse coherence and understanding. Monofunctional Discourse Structuring Markers like further, instead, moreover are distinguished from multifunctional ones like after all and by the way. Drawing on usage-based work on constructionalization and constructional changes, the book is in three parts: foundational concepts, case studies, and currently open issues in diachronic construction grammar. These open issues are how to incorporate the concepts subjectification and intersubjectification into a constructional account of change, whether position in a clause is a construction, and the nature of constructional networks and how they change.
Book Synopsis The Rise of Discourse Markers by : Bernd Heine
Download or read book The Rise of Discourse Markers written by Bernd Heine and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2021-06-24 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Discourse markers constitute an important part of linguistic communication, and research on this phenomenon has been a thriving field of study over the past three decades. However, a problem that has plagued this research is that these markers exhibit a number of structural characteristics that are hard to interpret based on existing methodologies, such as grammaticalization. This study argues that it is possible to explain such characteristics in a meaningful way. It presents a cross-linguistic survey of the development of discourse markers, their important role in communication, and their relation to the wider context of sociocultural behaviour, with the goal of explaining their similarities and differences across a typologically wide range of languages. By giving a clear definition of discourse markers, it aims to provide a guide for future research, making it essential reading for students and researchers in linguistics, and anyone interested in exploring this fascinating linguistic phenomenon.

Book Synopsis Japanese Discourse Markers by : Noriko Onodera
Download or read book Japanese Discourse Markers written by Noriko Onodera and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2004-01-01 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is one of the pioneering historical pragmatic studies of Japanese. It closely illustrates the usage and contributions of some Japanese discourse markers, and reveals their developmental history. The section on Synchronic Analysis explores the previously uninvestigated functions of some discourse markers used in Present Day Japanese. Moment by moment in on-going conversations, where culturally rigidly-defined interactional norms are highly valued, a specific marker is chosen and used by the speakers as their strategy, based on their quite subjective judgment. The section on Diachronic Analysis then demonstrates chronologically how the meanings and forms of the same markers have come into being. Results include some noticeable changes related to the strengthened intersubjectivity. This multi-dimensional study also discusses the relevance of findings to typological characteristics and productivity. Consideration is further given to why certain expressions (rather than others) become discourse markers and independent forms in Japanese.

This book was released on 1989-02-01 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Does exposure to environmental toxicants inhibit our ability to have healthy children who develop normally? Biologic markersâ€"indicators that can tell us when environmental factors have caused a change at the cellular or biochemical level that might affect reproductive abilityâ€"are a promising tool for research aimed at answering that important question. Biologic Markers in Reproductive Toxicology examines the potential of these markers in environmental health studies; clarifies definitions, underlying concepts, and possible applications; and shows the benefits to be gained from their use in reproductive and neurodevelopmental research.
Book Synopsis Cellular Cancer Markers by : Carleton T. Garrett
Download or read book Cellular Cancer Markers written by Carleton T. Garrett and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 491 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Cellular Cancer Markers leading pathologists and physicians review today's most promising cellular cancer markers, an important emerging class of prognostic markers that can be used in the clinical evaluation of cancer patients. The markers reviewed have been chosen because they are biologically relevant to the growth of cells and possess an accurate and reproducible assay for detection. They also are predictors of tumor behavior, are useful in making clinical decisions, and are cost effective. Cellular Cancer Markers provides a status report for markers of tumor cell activation, proliferation, and longevity that makes possible an informed judgment regarding the value of many newly proposed tumor markers. It also offers insight into the latest approaches to diagnosing cancer and an appreciation of how these marker-based tests can clarify the prognosis of cancer.

Book Synopsis Discourse Markers in Early Modern English by : Ursula Lutzky
Download or read book Discourse Markers in Early Modern English written by Ursula Lutzky and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2012 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume provides new insights into the nature of the Early Modern English discourse markers marry, well and why through the analysis of three corpora (A Corpus of English Dialogues, 1560-1760, the Parsed Corpus of Early English Correspondence, and the Penn-Helsinki Parsed Corpus of Early Modern English). By combining both quantitative and qualitative approaches in the study of pragmatic markers, innovative findings are reached about their distribution throughout the period 1500-1760, their attestation in different speech-related text types as well as similarities and differences in their functions. Additionally, this work engages in a sociopragmatic study, based on the sociopragmatically annotated Drama Corpus of almost a quarter of a million words, to enhance our understanding about their use by characters of different social status and gender. This volume therefore constitutes an essential piece of the puzzle in our attempt to gain a full picture of discourse marker use.
Book Synopsis Discourse Markers in Second Language French by : Alisha Reaves

Biologic Markers in Pulmonary Toxicology is a comprehensive study of this use of biologic markers. Focusing on the respiratory tract as an entryway for airborne pollutants, this volume reviews new ways of measuring markers, the need for markers to indicate dose or exposure levels, noninvasive respiratory function tests for use with healthy humans to detect sensitivity to inhaled pollutants, approaches to evaluating markers down to the cellular and biochemical levels, and more.
Book Synopsis Discourse Markers in Interaction by : Maria-Josep Cuenca
Download or read book Discourse Markers in Interaction written by Maria-Josep Cuenca and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2022-09-06 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this volume is to bring together researchers interested in investigating the role that Discourse Markers play in language production and comprehension from an experimental or corpus-based perspective. In any kind of human communication, Discourse Markers are part of the game. This omnipresence informs us of a crucial inherent aspect of human language. Yet, as a linguistic category, Discourse Markers remain underdetermined. To gain deeper insight into this complex linguistic category, more systematic work is needed on the production and on the interpretation of Discourse Markers in a variety of situational settings, resorting to different methodological approaches. The contributions in this volume aim at drawing more attention to the double face of Discourse Markers, namely as signals intentionally used by the speaker to facilitate the addressee’s interpretation of the discourse, but also as potential traces of the speaker’s production difficulties. The combination of experimental and corpus-based approaches and the focus on processing of Discourse Markers in both production and comprehension makes this volume a unique contribution in answering the question why we use Discourse Markers in certain situations, but also when we do not.
